Avengers: Doomsday Star Channing Tatum Reveals Gambit's New Cajun Accent In New Commercial With H.E.R.B.I.E.

Channing Tatum played Gambit's Cajun accent for laughs in Deadpool & Wolverine, but a new commercial—featuring a team-up with H.E.R.B.I.E.—reveals the actor's dialled-back version for Avengers: Doomsday.

Channing Tatum was supposed to play Gambit in his own solo movie for 20th Century Fox. However, after going through several filmmakers and multiple false starts, the Disney/Fox merger happened before cameras could start rolling on the ill-fated spin-off.

Much to the delight of many fans—and Tatum himself—the actor got a second chance in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. While he was front and centre in a variety of badass action scenes set in The Void, Tatum largely played Gambit for laughs with a near-incomprehensible Cajun accent.

It was hard to imagine that ever factoring into a far more serious movie like Avengers: Doomsday, and a new Dunkin' commercial reveals what Remy LeBeau's new accent sounds like. Tatum has dialled it back significantly; what he's come up with is what you'd expect and want a character such as Gambit to sound like when he speaks.

In the commercial, the mutant is hanging out in the New Avengers Tower when H.E.R.B.I.E. arrives and attempts to explain the Incursions that are laying waste to the Multiverse...using "Avenging Munchkins Donut Hole Treats," of course.

Interestingly, we get a glimpse of what the opening stages of an Incursion will look like as another Earth hovers ominously about the MCU's Earth-616.

"The accent’s a tough one," Tatum previously acknowledged. "It’s hard to explain that to someone that isn’t from the South, isn’t from Louisiana. My dad’s from New Orleans. I’ve been around. That accent has a big spectrum. You cannot understand ‘em at all, and you can understand 'em at times. So you have to really play with it."

"I’m not gonna go full Cajun. [Directors Anthony and Joe Russo] want things to be funny, but they don’t want to go full Deadpool," he later explained. "They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter."

I don't know if anyone can pull off Gambit's look or costume. I do know that Tainting Channum cannot

@ProfessorWhy - it'd help if he had the 5 o'clock shadow. Having a swimmer-thin frame would also help.

This guy has the look, but I think it'd take a guy to mimic the animated voice over to make fans feel like we got Remy.

@KennKathleen - Black and red eyes would help too.

@ProfessorWhy -

Agreed. The hardest part about casting Gambit is getting someone who is believable as Gambit, the look, the accent, the whole thing. You can find someone who looks like Gambit, but that accent really has to be believable from whoever it comes from .

I was never too keen on Gambit. And I thought Tatum was terrible casting.
Then I saw "Deadpool & Wolverine" and immediately ate my hat. Dude is PERFECT as Gambit and I hope he gets to be in the new X-Movies going forward.

im glad this got to happen. idc if his take is more comedic. we needed a better Gambit than what we got in Wolverine Origins. This is better. Not great. But better.

I think Tatum’s Cajun accent for Doomsday (if the one we see in the commercial is that) sounds pretty good and definitely more dialed back as opposed to DP & W which was obviously heightened for comedic effect but I’m sure the Cajun accent experts on here will have a different opinion.

Anyway , now i want some Dunkin’ Donuts!!.

Honestly, it all works except for the headpiece - it isn't needed. Just speaking costume wise. It just doesn't quite, like, what does it do? It doesn't protect. It doesn't hide his identity. I think that's what it is. Everything else can work. Just lose the headpiece. And red eyes won't work either. Now, as he is powering up, that "float" from his eyes would be cool. Like they did with Storm's eyes when she was powering up (went white) But, yeah, its so close, and yet still so far away...
