What Does DOOMSDAY's Mutant-Heavy Cast List Mean For X-MEN Reboot? Are We Getting AVENGERS VS. X-MEN?

Marvel Studios officially announced the full (supposedly) cast for Avengers: Doomsday on Wednesday, and the mutant-heavy line-up has left fans with a lot of questions...

On Wednesday, Marvel Studios asked us to "pull up a chair" for a lengthy (it ran for over five hours in the end) full(?) Avengers: Doomsday cast reveal, and the list of 27 names left fans with quite a few questions.

If you've been keeping up with rumors relating to the 2026 MCU event film, you may have been expecting the cast of Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps as well as a couple of X-Men characters (we had heard that both Kelsey Grammer and Sir Patrick Stewart were set to return after their respective appearances in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Marvels), but by far the biggest surprise was the amount of mutants that will feature in the movie.

Joining Stewart and Grammer will be Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops, and Channing Tatum as Gambit.

Tatum made his MCU debut in Deadpool and Wolverine, but Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were not announced as part of the Doomsday cast.

It's an unusual line-up, for sure, and the presence of so many characters from 20th Century Fox's original X-Men films has led to speculation that this might be the team we will see in the long-awaited MCU reboot. It seems highly unlikely that the roster will only be made up of these characters, but there is a chance at least some of these mutants will stick around to usher in a new era with younger actors being brought in to fill certain other roles.

Another theory is that Doomsday will basically serve as an Avengers vs. X-Men movie, with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom leading the Children of the Atom to war against Earth's Mightiest Heroes. A previous rumor suggested that Doom would actually assemble a team of "evil" Avengers variants, and while that may still be the plan for Secret Wars, there was no sign of Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff) or any of the other OG Avengers that were said to be returning.

Is it possible Doom will first attempt to defeat our New Avengers by convincing the X-Men that they are a threat to the Multiverse? We can't see the movie taking too much inspiration from the AvX comic run, which saw both teams clash over the approaching Phoenix Force, but there are a number of ways a similar plot device can be utilized here.

We now have confirmation that more cast members will be announced (which likely explains the absence of Tom Holland's Spider-Man, etc), which should give us a better idea of what to expect.

For now, you can check out today's full Doomsday cast list along with the announcement video below.

Geriatric xmen vs unpopular avengers.

Lolz!

@vectorsigma - Many of the Avengers are the same ages as the X-men tho, or older in some cases… Sam Jackson is 76, Don Cheadle is 60, RDJ is 59, Mark Ruffalo is 57, Paul Rudd is 55, Jeremy Renner is 54, Benedict Cumberbatch is 49, Pedro Pascal is 49, Charlize Theron is 49, etc. So are we just gonna act like they’re fine and the X-men actors are only ones getting long in the tooth here?

@Jackraow21 - maybe compute the average age of the 2 sides? You didnt even mention hemsworth, kirby, bacharach, johnny (forgot name), Letitia, etc

Jackraow21 - 3/27/2025, 11:56 AM
@vectorsigma - There are younger X-men too, such as Lana Condor/Jubilee (27) or Anna Taylor Joy/Magik (28), or any of the other New Mutants characters; and even folks like Anna Paquin/Rogue, Shawn Ashmore/Iceman and Daniel Cudmore/Colossus are in their early to mid 40s. So I think it would balance out honestly.

@Jackraow21 - we are just talking about the doomsday cast for now

@vectorsigma - In which case Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen dramatically skew the average. But overall, my point remains. After Secret Wars it’s probably not just the X-men who need to be rebooted/recast. They’re really not that out of whack with the main MCU actors age wise.

My guess is that like the Ultimate and 616 Universe in the 2015 Secret Wars comic almost collided due to an incursion , that will be the case here with the MCU and the one from the end of the Marvels with both sides trying to figure out why it’s happening before it’s too late.

The FF’s inclusion could be Reed also noticing this if he’s already studying the multiverse as implied in the FF teaser which leads him to RDJ’s Victor who is from their reality who they find out is behind it…

Perhaps 2 if the FF each go to the 2 universes to help?.

In the lead up to Secret Wars, the heroes from 616 and the ultimate universe fought. They may just do that with the fox verse and the MCU. Doom uses that as a distraction to do his own thing.

We’re getting (mostly) C-list Avengers vs. Fox-Men….

@WeaponXCII - They need to bring the A-list Avengers back. The age appropriate ones for Secret Wars and age appropriate newbies for the reboot.

By which I mean RDJ, Evans, Ruffalo etc for Doomsday/Secret Wars (who would be age appropriate to the FoX-Men) and then recast Tony, Steve, etc for the reboot (who would be age appropriate for the rebooted X-Men).

@WeaponXCII - Those X-men aren't exactly top tier either. Kind of an odd lineup.

My bet is that Downey (Unless he's masked up) plays Doom pretending to be Stark after finding someway to disguise himself. Knowing about the original Tony's backstory and sacrifice and uses that to gain control and trust amongst the other 616 heroes.

He's hardly going to be masked up though, Disney ain't paying him so much to hide his face.

Member Berries: The Movie. I grew up with the X-Men movies. Feige got his start there but the big reason this is happening is because Deadpool 3 made the most money. It's as simple as that. They pivot all the time, after the Kang debacle it was clear RDJ was the ace up their sleeve. The best part about Infinty War and Endgame was the STORY THAT ALSO HAD A LOT OF CHARACTERS. Don't forget that..

I doubt it will be Avengers vs X-Men, but moreso just Avengers & X-Men. Think both teams will independently look into the incursions, both ending facing Doom.

As for the X-Men specifically, I think it would be cool if it's actually the '97 X-Men. Doubt it though. It's probably just the X-Men from the Days of Future Past ending.
