POWER RANGERS: Jonathan Entwistle's Plans For Netflix Series Involved The Multiverse And Beloved Fan-Favorite

New details have emerged about Jonathan Entwistle's scrapped Power Rangers reboot for Netflix, and for longtime fans of the series, it sounds like it would have been an epic nostalgia-fest.

Jonathan Entwistle (Karate Kid: Legends) and Jenny Klein (Daisy Jones & The Six) were chosen by Hasbro and Netflix in 2020 to serve as showrunners on a Power Rangers reboot for the streamer.

Four years later, that iteration of the project was scrapped, with Hasbro instead choosing to hand the keys to the Power Rangers kingdom to Disney+ and Percy Jackson and the Olympians creatives Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz.

Entwistle has previously shared a few details about what he had planned for the franchise, and now trusted Power Rangers insider Jin x Supreme (@Jinsakuu) has weighed in (via SFFGazette.com). Teasing Entwisle's "bold," "ballsy" approach, he explained that the filmmaker's goal was to deliver a "real" show with an adult, dark, and gritty tone.

This take on Power Rangers would have been a Multiverse story, with past Rangers dying on screen and "actual Ranger wars with flying dragons" (prompting the X user to compare it to Game of Thrones).

We'd have even seen armoured suits, while a returning Tommy Oliver was set to lead a new group of Rangers.

This lines up with past comments from Entwistle, who has talked about his Multiversal vision for the property and wanting to establish Tommy and the mythology surrounding him as the centre of a Power Rangers Universe. Lord Drakkon, an evil version of Tommy Oliver, was set to be the main villain.

We don't know what Steinberg and Shotz have planned for Disney+'s Power Rangers, but it has recently been reported that Priyanka Chopra is being eyed for Rita Repulsa.

Mason Thames, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Shaun Dixon, Paris Bravo, Judd Goodstein, Momoma Tamada, Christian Alexander Cruz, and Kira McLean are among those said to be in the mix to play the new Rangers.

More interestingly, the report claims actress Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack, Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.) is all but guaranteed to join the series, with Mason Thames (The Black Phone, How To Train Your Dragon) also said to be in the mix. The site adds that Lee will be one of the main leads.

The Power Rangers franchise kicked off in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a TV series created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy. It was adapted from Japan's Super Sentai series, blending footage of Japanese action sequences with newly filmed American scenes. The show became an instant hit, captivating kids with its mix of martial arts, giant robots, and colourful costumes.

Over time, the franchise expanded into films, comic books, toys, and video games, becoming a pop culture phenomenon. As noted, a 2017 effort meant to capitalise on the success of superheroes fell flat, so we're optimistic this next take returns to the series' roots, Zords and all.

Power Rangers fans will be hoping that this iteration fares better than the 2017 movie that attempted to put a superhero spin on the characters. It grossed only $142 million worldwide on a $100 million budget, slamming the door shut on sequel plans.

Make sure you keep checking back here for updates on Power Rangers as we have them.

Nothing says adult, dark and gritty like a childrens show called Power Rangers.

Also, this sounds horrible anyways.

I hope they can reboot the series in a way that caters to kids, not sad adults who can’t let go of their childhood.

@Humby - kids can enjoy Dark and gritty too, remember Bruce Tim's Batman ?

@Humby - Its possible for a series to grow up along with it's audience, Harry Potter proved that.

@Humby - Or maybe they can create something new for the kids. Give them their own thing.

The only reason people green light established IP is because of the brand-recognition and in-built fanbase. That in-built fanbase is invariably older for older franchises.

@Humby - A "dark" Power Rangers show is doable, several seasons have done that

@heisei24 - do you know off hand which ones? There are so many seasons and want to see a darker, more grounded version, if possible, similar to the 2017 movie.

@epc1122 - There's no series that has the aesthetic of the 2017 movie. If you want to check out the Darkest Power Rangers series though go with RPM. It's actually really self contianed and though the suits can look a bit goofy the actual story and plot lines though are fairly mature. It's the near future post apocalypse "most of the population of the world has already been wiped out" Power Rangers series.

In retrospect, my word choice was a little harsh there, so sorry about that yall. I wanna follow up by saying there's nothing wrong with adults enjoying content aimed at younger audiences, and add I'm well aware that kids also can consume and enjoy content with darker tones, ala Batman. The issue I have with this particular example is that Power Rangers never needed adult tones and gritty realism to be successful. There is a cheesy lightheartedness that is a central component of Power Rangers identity, even throughout some of the 'darker' plot threads in later series/seasons. But I just don't think it's possible to do adult and gritty without losing that core component, and I think that's why the 2017 film had no traction. By taking itself too seriously, it just turned into every other sci-fi/superhero movie that audiences have seen before. You can freshen something up for modern audiences without trying to reinvent the wheel.

@HashTagSwagg - Harry Potter is a coming of age story though, it's designed to grow with the audience. And it's not like the remake series is going to continue the darker tone of the later films, it's going to go back and emulate the lighter tone of the first few films. Power Rangers on the other hand has been so tonally consistent, over the course of decades at this point, and its just not an IP that grows with the audience in the same way as HP.

@ObserverIO - I get that component of a built-in fanbase, but if they are doing so at the expense of growing a larger audience, then it's not going to have any longevity.

But anyways, I digress. I do think the plot details here really make it seem like they didn't know exactly what this was going to be. Gritty reboot, series sequel/returning characters, tired multiverse tropes. Seems like a hodgepodge of ideas that are more likely to turn people away than gain new audiences IMO.

@DianaGohan - thanks for the recommendation. I’ve seen some series here and there but I’m not sure I’ve seen that series in its entirety. Is that the series right after the original with the kid as the blue ranger? I knew the 2017 movie had its own aesthetic but do you think the rpm series is the one the other poster was referring to as the “darker” series?

Interesting…

Not sure how I feel about them having gone straight to the Multiverse off the boat but them really making Tommy the center of it sounded cool since he’s probably been my favorite Ranger but oh well.

However them using the Boom Studio comics as inspiration to ally and storywise was a good idea since those were rather well received imo!!.

I mean, I feel like one reason for this getting scrapped probably stems from two simple facts:

1. Jason David Frank had apparently already been interested in moving on from Tommy, so Tommy's being at the center of this story would probably either be changed or he'd need to be switched out for a new character (which might explain Billy's increased presence in Cosmic Fury and Once and Always). Even if JDF was willing to return...
2. His suicide probably put a kabash on those plans.

While people cite Game of Thrones, the description of darker, edgier, armored Rangers is giving me vibes from some of the darker Kamen Rider shows... which isn't that surprising given Saban previously tried to do something with that, too.

I would love to see the Power Rangers of the multiverse sent to a wild land populated by dinosaurs and other extinct creatures. There, they would have to survive, and there are no Zords; instead, the Rangers would fight to train and subdue the local wildlife to make them their allies.

Lord Drakkon reigns there, and he resides in a volcano alongside a gigantic dragon.

I'd be interested in a stranger things tone with Power Rangers reboot.
More terrifying and serious takes on Lord Zedd like a Vecna but also more young adult storylines with a lot of sincerity and heart like Stranger Things did in the early seasons.
But they for sure need top tier action choreographers like Shang-Chi level.
