AVENGERS: ENDGAME Director Believes Tom Holland's Spider-Man Has Replaced Tony Stark As The MCU's "Soul"

Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo has shared high praise for Tom Holland's Spider-Man, explaining why he believes the actor has, in many ways, replaced Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man as the MCU's soul.

In a recent GQ profile, 25-year-old Tom Holland seemingly made it clear that he has no intentions of playing Peter Parker beyond the age of 30. That leaves us with a finite amount of time to follow this Spider-Man's big screen journey, and there's currently nothing to say he'll stick around beyond Spider-Man: No Way Home.

For Joe Russo, however, Holland is irreplaceable as the character. "Tom is stepping into the role that Robert Downey once occupied for Marvel," the filmmaker tells the publication, "which is the favorite character, and in a lot of ways the soul of the Marvel universe."

There's no denying that Spider-Man is one of the most popular superheroes in the world today, and it's no wonder Disney fought to keep the character around after Sony's deal with them fell apart during production of Spider-Man: Far From Home. It's a shame Holland doesn't appear to be around for the long haul, though who knows how much could change once the negotiations begin.

As for what makes him such a perfect choice to play Spider-Man, Russo added: "He [has] a vulnerability and a wit, and an immense likability that felt to me like Peter Parker from the comics."

The Russo Brothers cast Holland as Peter in 2016's Captain America: Civil War and later worked with him on Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and their own AGBO movie Cherry. With rumours swirling that they plan to return to Marvel Studios for Secret Wars down the line, if anyone can convince Holland to suit up again, you have to believe it will be Joe and Anthony.

Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in U.S. on December 17 and in the UK on December 15.

Spider-Man was always Marvel's soul, nothing's changed. It's about time that he stands at the forefront of Marvel movies once again.

Tom will keep playing Peter after 30. No doubt.

@Gmoney84 - he's actually said recently that if he's still playing Spiderman at 30 then he did something wrong.

@Origame - We all know that he is publicly negotiating a new deal (since he's done with all is solo outings and only has one team-up movie left). Dude's gonna get a lot of money for his next contract.

@Origame - I never understood this thinking. If I made it in my profession of choice to the degree where I had an avenue to earn millions doing something I at least enjoy, and let's me cherry pick from roles that come my way whenever I'm not making blockbusters, I'd make these Spiderman movies till the cows come home and the well dries up. Lucky enough to provide for your loved ones, live a full life of travel and whatever else, and have the financial stability to make whatever film you want to creatively in between.... I'd play the role till I was an old man. Till they stopped asking me back.

@ElricReturns - I kinda do. It's not necessarily being against doing the job, but wanting variety in life. Especially when it's a role like this that's so dependent on age. Once he starts to get noticeably older then they're probably gonna start looking for someone else anyway. And what's he gonna do when all his roles are some variation of nervous teenager?

An immense likability??? Okay i am missing something. He's fine, sure. But he's no Chris Evans/Steve Rogers.

Cap was the soul of the Avengers, so you got that wrong right off the bat. I'm so excited for this movie, but I gotta keep expectations in check. Also can someone fix it so if someone blocks you, I don't have to see replies to said blocker lol thanks!

In the world of comic books Spider-Man is their flagship character. Moviewise it should have been Steve Rogers,Captain America. He should have been the face of the MCU, it just happened that Iron Man turned out more popular choice with general audiences.

@marvel72 - No. What happened was Favreau and Downey struck gold with Iron Man 1. It was their Winter Soldier. It took Cap a few movies to get there.

Aunt May is the soul of the MCU.

OT:
Earth X writer talks about Kevin Feige using his Celestial Seed plot for Eternals movie adaptation.

"I first met Kevin Feige years ago, after the first trade paperback of Earth X had come out. We sat down a number of times and Kevin shared his love for Earth X. He also shared that it was at a time when many of the Marvel heroes, including X-Men, Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four [were being turned into movies].
At the time, Kevin told me how much he wanted to make Earth X. And I told him that I thought he could do it with the Eternals. Talk about seeds being planted. It didn't take hundreds of thousands of years like a Celestial, but it took almost 25."

Looks like we’re in negotiation tactics land. Tom casts doubt on return, people in his corner making noise that “you need this guy” and I agree, i don’t always agree with the story choices but I want more Spidey in this universe.

@IKidYouNotMan - You know, I just rewatched Sam Raimi's Spider-man last night and I noticed the teacher never say "Man", it's just "I kid you not". Is this a Mandella effect or have I just been reading your username all these years and now I remember it wrong?

He’s always been the soul of Marvel in the comics but I’ve yet to see it here. He’s obviously the most liked MCU character right now but he’s no Captain Rogers. He was the soul. If anything, at the very least, MCU Spidey is being turned into a BRIDGE between Sony and marvel.

They buttering Tom up so he can get a new contract.

IMO the MCU's heart is the man who changed from an arrogant to-be-King to a self sacrifcial and kind hearted demigod

Iron-Man for a self-proclaimed genius made a lot of mistakes and responsible for a lot of Avengers problems. Stark's arrogance has always been his down fall even in the comics. I see Captain America as heart and soul of the first 3 phases.
