AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR: Here's Every Single Major Character Confirmed (And Rumored) To Appear
Avengers: Infinity War is going to be crammed full of Marvel heroes and villains but which of them have been confirmed to appear and who is rumoured to show up? We have your must-see guide to that here...
Avengers: Infinity War is going to be a very big movie. It was back in 2016 that directors Joe and Anthony Russo first said that we're going to see something like 67 characters in the first instalment of this two-parter and since then, a huge number of them have been confirmed to appear and almost just as many have been rumoured as showing up too. So, yeah, the MCU is getting seriously crowded!
So, with that in mind, we've gone through every report, set photo, and rumour to gather up a list of every Marvel hero and villain expected to make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War next year.
As well as taking a look at which characters will show up when Thanos arrives on Earth looking for the Infinity Stones, we've delved into everything we know about what they'll be getting up to and what sort of impact that might have on Avengers 4. Some potential spoilers do follow, so read on for details.
To view the list of characters in its entirety, simply click on the VIEW LIST (ONE PAGE) button below.
Korg
Korg stole the show in Thor: Ragnarok and considering the fact he was on the God of Thunder's spaceship when Thanos attacked, common sense says that he'll make an appearance in this movie. Marvel has to realise they have a a character destined to be a fan-favourite on their hands here and the rocky hero will be a great source of comic relief in an otherwise very serious superhero movie.
Black Panther
T'Challa will be seen in his own solo movie next February and we can expect that to go some way in setting up the events of Avengers: Infinity War. It is, after all, the final release on the way before the highly anticipated superhero ensemble and with the leaked Comic-Con trailer revealing that some sort of alien force will invade Wakanda and that the Black Panther will be joined by Captain America and Bucky in fighting them off, he's clearly going to be integral to this battle.
War Machine
James Rhodes was badly wounded in Captain America: Civil War and the last time we saw him, he was struggling to learn how to walk again (despite some help from Tony Stark). Well, he'll be back in action in Avengers: Infinity War and it will be interesting seeing just how much time the Russo Brothers decide to dedicate to his struggles and what's sure to be a difficult relationship with The Vision seeing as it was his fault he got blasted out of the sky in the first place.
Pepper Potts
Talking of Iron Man supporting characters, none of us expected to see Gwyneth Paltrow return as Pepper Potts and so her cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming was definitely a surprise. Recent set photos confirmed that she's been in Atlanta shooting Avengers: Infinity War but we don't know for sure right now whether we'll see her in both or if her scenes were actually for Avengers 4. Chances are she will make some sort of appearance here but put her on the rumoured list for now.
Doctor Strange
While most of us suspected it in the build-up to the release of Doctor Strange, the mention of the Sorcerer Supreme wearing one of the Infinity Stones around his neck still came as a surprise last year. Thanos coming after the hero now seems to be an inevitability but seeing as the MCU's version of the Eye of Agamotto is used primarily for playing with time, Strange should be ok without it when he inevitably loses it once the Mad Titan arrives on Earth looking for the powerful artefact.
Wong
You can't have Stephen Strange without Wong! Doctor Strange made it clear that the hero's mentor/sidekick is an expert on the Infinity Stones and while the Sorcerer Supreme has no doubt already done some research in regards to the Stones, Earth's Mightiest Heroes will no doubt benefit from Wong's guidance. Plus, it wouldn't make much sense for Wong not to show up in the Sanctum Sanctorum and you have to hope he's given a juicy role as opposed to a forgettable cameo.
Spider-Man
It's already been confirmed that Peter Parker will don the technologically advanced suit first glimpsed at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming and while it's definitely a departure in terms of design from the source material, it will be fun seeing just how much that helps the wall-crawler when he joins The Avengers to take on Thanos' army. The leaked trailer showed Peter in a pretty bad way as he apologised to Tony Stark, so his role in Avengers 4 is very much a mystery right now.
Valkyrie
As we now know after seeing Thor: Ragnarok, Tessa Thompson steals the show as Valkyrie. The leaked trailer for Avengers: Infinity War may have shown the God of Thunder floating alone in outer space but the Revengers reassembling at some point does make sense, especially as Valkyrie is powerful enough to really help turn the tide of this battle in the favour of all our favourite heroes. This hasn't been confirmed just yet but Thor: Ragnarok made it clear she's hanging out with the God of Thunder still.
Shuri
Considering the fact we're heading to Wakanda in this movie, it won't surprise you to learn that many members of Black Panther's supporting cast will appear here. Among those confirmed to show up is Shuri, T'Challa's sister and the woman responsible for much of the country's advanced technology. It could be that she will help bring Bucky out of deep freeze and seeing as she rocks some pretty amazing Pather gauntlets of her own, her getting involved in the fight against Thanos' hoards is a guarantee.
Dr. Erik Selvig
It was confirmed a while ago that Dr. Erik Selvig will be returning for Avengers: Infinity War but what on Earth will he add to the movie? Well, he knows plenty about Asgard and is an expert with at least one Infinity Stone - the Tesseract - so he could be supplying Earth's Mightiest Heroes with a lot of key expertise in the movie. If I had to put money on it, I would say that he'll probably be killed off here while trying to help Thor and company as there's not much left to be done with the character.
Nova Prime
Due to the fact Glenn Close's Nova Prime was neither mentioned nor appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, many fans suspected that she might be done with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then, director James Gunn has confirmed that he shot a cameo with her which was later cut and you have to believe that both she and the Nova Corps will be seen in Avengers: Infinity War. They are, after all, looking after the Stone which Ronan lost and Thanos is going to want to get that back ASAP.
Star-Lord
Avengers: Infinity War is set to finally bring together Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy so Star-Lord playing a key role here isn't exactly a surprise. While we don't know for sure whether or not he'll be coming back to Terra, Peter Quill will get a taste of home when he comes face to face with The Avengers and that's going to be a lot of fun to see. Plus, you just know it's going to be amazing watching Peter and Tony Stark try to out-snark each other.
Iron Man
Talking of Tony, Iron Man is going to play a key role in this movie and we should all probably start placing bets now on how long it will be until the Armoured Avengers uses that disposable cell phone to give Steve Rogers a call and reassemble Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Leaked promo art has revealed that the hero is getting a serious upgrade here in terms of his armour but will that be enough to stop Thanos seeing as the leaked trailer showed him throwing Iron Man around with ease?
Hawkeye
Hawkeye has obviously been confirmed as making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War but there are an awful lot of rumours surrounding plans for the archer in Avengers 4. Those point to Clint Barton taking on his Ronan persona and set photos have confirmed that he gets a drastic new look in that movie so something big is clearly going to happen to him here. As of right now, the prevailing theory is that his family will be killed but is that too dark for the MCU?
The Vision
The Vision is walking around with an Infinity Stone on his forehead, so it was inevitable from the moment he was introduced that the android would play a key role in Avengers: Infinity War. The majority of fans believe that he's going to die at the hands of Thanos and his Black Order but who's to say he won't still be able to operate even without the Stone? Set photos have pointed to him becoming human when that happens but those could have just been rehearsals.
Rocket Raccoon
There's a long list of Avengers who it would be fun to see Rocket Raccoon interact with but official concept art has confirmed that the fan-favourite CGI character voiced by Bradley Cooper will seemingly be spending a lot of time with the God of Thunder specifically. That's a very unexpected team up but one which should be a lot of fun but you have to hope that Rocket will spend at least some time with Iron Man as those two trading barbs should be awesome.
Groot
We can't talk about Rocket without Groot! At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it was revealed that the sentient tree is now an adolescent and while many fans suspected that he would be fully grown by the time Avengers: Infinity War rolls around, it's since been confirmed that he'll remain in this form because that scene with Star-Lord and Groot actually took place four years or so after the rest of the sequel. Will he be as adorable as Baby Groot, though?
Bucky
Bucky played an integral role in Captain America: Civil War and things wrapped up with him being put back on ice while Wakanda's scientists work on removing what's left of Hydra's programming. In the leaked trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, we saw the former Winter Soldier fighting alongside T'Challa so he's clearly going to be spending a lot of time with Black Panther but whether or not he'll cross paths with Iron Man again remains to be seen seeing as Tony wants him dead!
Corvus Glaive
At Comic-Con, it was confirmed that The Black Order will appear in Avengers: Infinity War. A relatively new group of characters, one big difference to the source material is the fact that - like Gamora and Nebula - they're going to be portrayed as the Children of Thanos. As a result, we can probably forget about him being the husband of Proxima Midnight (unless the Mad Titan is ok with incest) but as the villain's right-hand man, he's truly a force to be reckoned with.
Ebony Maw
Ebony Maw is not a fighter; instead, he's vastly intelligent and is the ally Thanos relies on to help him strategise his attacks as he moves from planet to planet, leaving devastation in his wake. In the comic books, Maw is tasked with taking down Doctor Strange so if Avengers: Infinity War winds up going down the same path, we can expect to see the villain making that particular Infinity Stone his priority while his siblings take aim at some of the others hidden across the galaxy.
Cull Obsidian
Known as Black Dwarf in the comic books, Cull Obsidian is the powerhouse of Thanos' army (though that should be clear from just looking at him). With that in mind, we can probably expect him to come to blows with the likes of Thor and The Hulk, both of whom will be battle-hardened after their time spent in The Grandmaster's arena. However, seeing as he's sent to Wakanda in the comics, it could be that Captain America, Bucky, and Black Panther have to deal with him!
Proxima Midnight
The fourth and final member of The Black Order, Proxima Midnight is an expert combatant but considering the fact she was sent to deal with Namor in the comic books, we have no idea who she'll cross paths with in Avengers: Infinity War. Chances are the King of Atlantis won't be introduced so soon after the release of Justice League and like the rest of Thanos' children, we currently have no idea who is playing Proxima (though it will be a motion-capture/voice performance).
Happy Hogan
Happy Hogan played a key role in Spider-Man: Homecoming and while Tony Stark's old bodyguard clearly isn't going to be much help in taking down Thanos, he will make his presence felt in Avengers: Infinity War (probably delivering the wall-crawler's new suit to him). Like Pepper Potts, it's possible Happy is being saved for Avengers 4 but it's too soon to say either way as those set photos landed right when the sequel had seemingly started shooting!
The Falcon
The Falcon has always flown under the radar when it comes to rumours and so we know little to nothing about what Captain America's other best friend will be getting up to in this movie. The last time we saw Sam Wilson, he was being broken out of prison by Steve Rogers so there's a very good chance these two have stayed together since. Then again, he could have gone on the run by himself so we're going to have to wait and see what sort of role he plays in this fight against Thanos.
Loki
Thor and Loki put their differences aside in Thor: Ragnarok but the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War indicated that the God of Mischief will once again be up to no good. After all, he could be seen holding the Terreract there and as Loki failed to deliver that to Thanos in The Avengers, it makes sense that the villain would now look to make that happen in order to save his own skin. After all, the Mad Titan promised to make him pay if he failed so the villain is going to want to make amends in some way.
The Hulk
Mark Ruffalo has made it clear that Thor: Ragnarok kicks off a three movie arc for the Jade Giant so it's will be interesting seeing that come to a head in Avengers 4. Something we do know is that the hero is vastly more intelligent than the last time we saw him and that's bound to make a difference in terms of how he interacts with his fellow heroes and the sort of role he'll play in this adventure. Could World War Hulk be looming? We'll have to wait and see!
Okoye
Okoye is the head of Black Panther's Dora Milaje and someone who will seemingly play a key role in commanding Wakanda's armies. While her role here is no doubt going to be a small one, there's a very good chance that we'll see the character helping T'Challa fight off the alien invaders who may or may not be heading to Wakanda to get their hands on an Infinity Stone. Time will tell whether or not that ends up being the case but it definitely seems like it after watching the trailer.
Scarlet Witch
The Scarlet Witch was granted her amazing abilities by one of the Infinity Stones so it would be naive not to think that she's going to play a key role in the fight against Thanos. However, based on what little we know about the movie, it seems as if most of her screentime is going to be spent alongside The Vision as the two heroes put their differences aside and finally embark on the romantic relationship they share in the comic books.
Mantis
Mantis was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and while it's obvious she's going to become a key member of the team, what her role in this movie will be is tough to say. The leaked Avengers: Infinity War trailer revealed that she wakes Thor up once the Guardians come across him in outer space but what can she really do in a fight against Thanos? Well, Mantis did help take down Ego to be fair, so here's hoping the Russos have thought of something good for her!
Thor
I've mentioned Thor a few times here already, so you'll know by now that the God of Thunder is found floating in space by the Guardians near the start of Avengers: Infinity War. In Thor: Ragnarok, we learned that the hero was stopped in his tracks by Thanos on the way to Earth, possibly because Loki let the Mad Titan know they were coming. Either way, it seems he will be the one who brings the Guardians back to Star-Lord's home planet!
Gamora
Gamora is Thanos' daughter but betrayed the villain all the way back in Guardians of the Galaxy when she realised that there was finally a way to get away from the monster who calls himself her father. Vol. 2 didn't really delve into how she's dealing with that these days but it would be naive not to expect her to tackle that head-on in this movie and that's no doubt going to entail her coming to blows with her sister Proxima Midnight because that's bound to be a great fight!
Black Widow
In Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow went on the run after betraying Iron Man's team and helping Captain America and Bucky escape. That no doubt goes some way in explaining why she's been pictured with blonde hair in the concept art released from the movie, something which is a drastic departure from the red locks which have become a staple of the character's appearance over the years. She may be just a human but expect Natasha to be key in stopping Thanos.
Drax
In Guardians of the Galaxy, Drax swore revenge on Thanos for the murder of his family so will we finally get to see him get some payback in Avengers: Infinity War? Well, the hero was easily overpowered by Ronan so he'll probably be no match for an Infinity Gauntlet wielding Thanos but you have to hope that we'll still get to see him at least land a few blows against the Mad Titan when they inevitably cross paths in this epic adventure next year.
Captain America
Calling Steve Rogers "Captain America" might not be wholly accurate as he gave up the shield in Captain America: Civil War and will have adopted his Nomad persona when Avengers: Infinity War begins. That's going to include growing a beard and wearing a tatty old suit with all references to his patriotic alter-ego and The Avengers no longer present. However, it would be silly not to think that he'll be back in the original suit with the shield by the time all is said and done!
Sharon Carter
Another character only rumoured for Avengers: Infinity War, we have no idea what's become of Sharon Carter but as Captain America: Civil War alluded to romance between her and Steve Rogers, it would be odd for the Russos to not reference that in some way here. Talking of characters associated with the government, there's been no word so far on whether or not General Ross will return to enforce the Sokovia Accords and surely Everett Ross will show up at some point too?
Nebula
At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Nebula set off to get revenge on Thanos but that didn't work out too well for her comic book counterpart in the Infinity Gauntlet storyline. It remains to be seen if this movie will head down that route but it would definitely be fitting to see this former villain try and enact revenge on her father now she's put her differences with Gamora aside. Unfortunately, my gut tells me she may be at risk of being killed off here!
Maria Hill
Cobie Smulders indicated that she might return for Avengers: Infinity War in an interview a while back but it's never been confirmed. What we do know is that there are no plans for Nick Fury to make his presence felt so what exactly can this Stark Industries employee add to the movie? Unless she's going to be killed off for the sake of it, it may be best to save her for further down the line but it certainly wouldn't hurt for her to finally get some decent material to work with in the MCU.
Ant-Man
Ant-Man and The Wasp is currently shooting in Atlanta and that's led to a lot of confusion about whether or not those two heroes will shrink into Avengers: Infinity War. While it's hard to imagine them not getting involved in some capacity, Kevin Feige has previously said that Marvel didn't put The Wasp in Captain America: Civil War because they wanted to save her introduction for the aforementioned sequel so perhaps we'll have to wait to see these two in Avengers 4!
Sif
Something we do know about Thor: Ragnarok is that Sif doesn't appear. Asked about that in a recent interview, Kevin Feige refused to explain why and indicated that Marvel might have been saving her for something else. Could Thor have tasked her with protecting one of the Stones? Even if it's a glorified cameo, it would be very cool learning where Sif has been in Avengers: Infinity War, especially if it finally opens the door to bigger things for the fan-favourite character.
The Collector
At the end of Thor: The Dark World, Sif and Volstagg handed over one of the Infinity Stones to The Collector for safekeeping. It was clear at the time he has his own interest in getting the set and while it's unclear whether that's going to be for his own use or on behalf of Thanos, he has been confirmed as returning by Josh Brolin, so chances are those two will share some scenes when the Mad Titan sets out to complete a collection of his own and put the Infinity Gauntlet to good (well, evil) use!
Thanos
It's already been confirmed that Josh Brolin will return as Thanos in Avengers 4 so it's not a spoiler to say he clearly won't be defeated by the time Avengers: Infinity War comes to an end! There are other possibilities, of course, but the battle against The Mad Titan stretching across two movies makes perfect sense and is probably needed to make this story as epic as possible. The question is, will he be killed off or be left to live to possibly fight another day?
Which of these characters are you most excited to see in Avengers: Infinity War? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section down below and stay tuned for more.
