The holiday season is nearly upon us, but Santa isn’t the only one bringing gifts this December. Sometime early next month, Marvel is rumored to be releasing the highly anticipated first trailer for their biggest film yet, Avengers: Infinity War. Here are a few things I hope to see in the highly anticipated teaser.
The Power of Thanos
In the teaser that was shown at D23 Expo this past summer, we got a glimpse of just how powerful the Mad Titan really is. The teaser showed Thanos blowing a planet up and throwing it at the Avengers, so that’s a heck of a way of showing that he’s a force to be reckoned with.
It will be interesting to see how the trailers build up Thanos to be a nearly unbeatable villain. The first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron introduced Ultron as the ultimate adversary for the Avengers, even though he was defeated in relatively short order (RIP Quicksilver). However, perhaps the reason why Ultron didn’t cause the apocalyptic damage that the trailer made it seem like he would is because Marvel is saving the real destruction for Infinity War.
The Nomad Suit, Sort Of
In the comics, Steve Rogers famously abandons the identity of Captain America after losing faith in his government. While this Watergate-era storyline is both powerful and relevant to what’s going on in the MCU right now, it’s going to be tough to adapt the goofy costume that Rogers wears as The Nomad to the big screen.
While a completely comic-accurate version of the costume is probably out of the question, the movie’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, have previously confirmed that Steve Rogers will not be Captain America when we first see him in the upcoming film. That doesn’t exactly mean he’s going to be Nomad, but it does mean that the filmmakers had some freedom when crafting his new look. There’s a chance that the bearded Steve Rogers will be wearing some kind of variation on the Nomad suit, which will include a lot less red, white and blue than we’re used to seeing Rogers wear.
Vintage Tony Stark Banter
Aside from the universe-changing stakes that are said to be a big part of Infinity War, one of the most exciting things about this movie is the potential for fun new character groupings. With the Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange meeting the Avengers for the first time, we’ll likely be treated to some fun meeting scenes, similar to what we saw in The Avengers.
With Tony Stark becoming acquainted with fellow wisecrackers Stephen Strange and Peter Quill, there should be plenty of opportunities for witty dialogue in between the death and destruction that Thanos will bring. While there will probably be some tension between all these big personalities, it’ll be satisfying to see them all join forces to fight Thanos and crack jokes together.
A Stark-Rogers Reunion
Coming off the high emotional stakes of Captain America: Civil War, there’s going to be a lot of tension between the heroes in this movie. With the Sokovia Accords still relevant, we don’t even know what the Avengers mandate is going to be when Thanos invades Earth. With Steve and the rest of the fugitive Avengers on the run from the authorities, there’s no guarantee that the heroes are all going to unite until they have no other option.
Even if they don’t makeup until the film’s third act, it would still be a powerful image to see Steve Rogers and Tony Stark come face-to-face again in the trailer. If Tony is the one who gives Steve his shield back, I think that’s a scene the studio should save for the actual film, so the moment packs the biggest possible emotional punch.
The New Spidey-Suit
We got a look at Tony Stark’s new Spider-Man suit at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and another glimpse of it in action in the leaked D23 footage, but those of us who weren’t in the crowd at the Disney fan expo have yet to see the suit in all its glory. The word is that Spider-Man won’t be in the movie for very long, but here’s hoping that he gets a chance to fight alongside Iron Man, something that the Homecoming trailers made us think we were going to see last summer.
There are a ton of interesting things that this movie could do with the character of Peter Parker. Since there’s a chance he’s going to be travelling to outer space, the MCU has a perfect opportunity to plant the seeds of a Symbiote storyline. While Sony is currently working on a Venom movie, it doesn’t look like there’s going to be any real connection to the MCU in the upcoming Tom Hardy film. Because of this, it would be amazing to see Marvel introduce this aspect of Spider-Man lore into their cinematic universe.
What are you hoping to see in the upcoming trailer? Sound off in the comments.
