TOP GUN: MAVERICK Shoots Down AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR's U.S. Box Office Record; Jerry Bruckheimer Responds

As expected, Top Gun: Maverick has managed to whiz past Avengers: Infinity War's North American box office record, while veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer reveals why he thinks it's topped Marvel and DC.

It's been clear for weeks that this was on the horizon, but over the weekend, Top Gun: Maverick passed another impressive box office milestone. That came when it flew by Avengers: Infinity War in North America to become the sixth-highest grossing movie of all time.

With a whopping $679 million haul, next on the Top Gun sequel's radar is Black Panther's $700 million. That's one target it might struggle to shoot down, but no one ever expected it to get this far. Ultimately, it probably won't come close to Avatar's $760 million, but this is still an impressive feat, and Top Gun: Maverick easily remains the biggest movie of Tom Cruise's career.

Worldwide, the movie sits at 13th place with $1.3 billion, with Avengers: Age of Ultron's $1.4 billion placing it just ahead (another Marvel blockbuster that may be at risk from Maverick and company).

Top Gun: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly (via ActioNewz.com) and shared his candid thoughts on why the sequel has managed to outperform this year's Marvel movies.

"That's what it's all about; it's about the emotion, it's about bringing Iceman back, it's about seeing a real movie. You're in the F-18 just like those actors are," he says. "They were trained for three months to be able to get into an F-18. You can see the struggles of what they're doing, what they're going through. That's all real, that's not made-up."

"I think audiences have been seeing so much CGI, which is wonderful, I go see the same movies, but it's also nice to see the real deal, and to be part of a camaraderie of characters that get up in the sky and have to be as good as they can be. The audiences love the Marvel, they love the DC stuff. They're beautifully made by really talented people."

"Sometimes you want to see something that's real, and that's what Top Gun gave us. These aviators are out there protecting our country right now, flying around the world, and you're taking a ride with them," Bruckheimer added. "You're seeing what they do, you're seeing what their life is like, and the trials and tribulations that they have to go through. You're actually experiencing it with our actors."

It's an interesting perspective, and agree or disagree, there's no denying Top Gun: Maverick has found an unprecedented level of box office success this summer. Something about it has clearly resonated with moviegoers, and they've embraced this action blockbuster in a bigger way than even recent hits like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder

More realistic and less preachy make for great movies and provide what movies have always been made for……. Escapism.

@Supercat6376 - exactly. I hope movies like this and no way home act as a wake up call for Hollywood.

@Supercat6376 - a movie that makes the military industrial complex seem awesome not preachy?
TheSuperMex
TheSuperMex - 8/23/2022, 8:47 AM
@Origame - so what you’re saying is that brining back movies from people childhoods should make billions.
Origame
Origame - 8/23/2022, 8:58 AM
@TheSuperMex - ...no. that they should focus on making movies fun rather than preach to the audience.

And don't think I didn't see that other comment. By no means is either top gun movie trying to make the military look fun. In fact, everything about those movies that looks fun is stuff maverick is specifically criticized for by that military complex, and their suggestions for how to solve the problem (which are also pretty boring as well) are also shown to be the wrong decisions that would've gotten the pilots killed. If anything, top gun is a criticism of the military and how it operates.

But, hey, whatever helps your narrative.

@Supercat6376 - movies aren't made for just escapism. And escapism can be used to send a message. Movies are made to tell stories. And stories can be used to entertain, or to send a message. Always has been. This movie succeeds at what it sets out to do. That doesnt mean other films csnt succeed at what they set out to do.

@Origame - “Don’t think I didn’t see that other comment” so? It’s an open forum, so nah duh you saw it. People are going to join the military because of the movie due to the fun parts. Movies can have hypocritical aspects. So now you say it criticizes the MIC, so you agree that the movie is preachy and isn’t pure escapism. The movies are making bank because of nostalgia. It’s the reason the shit Jurassic World sequels keep making money.

@TheSuperMex - this is like saying no way home is encouraging vigilantes. All they were trying to do was make a fun movie.

@Origame - A fun movie that also functions as an advertisement for the U.S. military just like the original. (case in point, I felt tempted to join after watching it). Ain't nothing wrong with that just as long as they focused on making a good movie first which they did.
Origame
Origame - 8/23/2022, 11:19 AM
@CaptainFlash17 - it functions as an ad for the military, yes. But that's unavoidable since the story is about fighter pilots. The point, as you mentioned, was first and foremost making a good movie.

@Toonstrack - Agreed. I hear frequently about how we don't want politics or other views in films because of said escapism. i liken it to that annoying character in a show, film, or production. Escapism isn't meant to be a wonderful experience in every case. Sometimes it's about self/societal observation. I don't know that collectively we're nailing that right now.

@Toonstrack - I agree. If you moviegoers want to be preached to those people will buy tickets and other moviegoers won’t. I do somewhat see your point. Myself personally I go for escapism. I want to immerse myself in a story and not think about political / social fights. I’m educated but I like boom bang pow.

This is a movie that had 3 generations going to the theater. I had anywhere between 80- to 15-year-old people in the theater when went.

Great movie, loved it & a very good sequel considering someone stepping up from my local lad's Tony Scott's (RIP) shoes. Kosinski did a superb job & a nice follow up. If he has any ideas or is ready to do a Top Gun 3, I'm on board.

And Jerry Bruckheimer with an excellent response. More producers & directors could learn from him with their responses.

He didn't have to tear Marvel or the Avengers down in giving praise to Top Gun Maverick's domestic success or with his opinions of CGI. Bravo.

Everyone can have something whether you prefer real movies like this or a CGI fest.

This news is late, it is at 683 domestic and 1.403 worldwide, just above AoU’s 1.402, which used to say 1.405🤷🏾‍♂️I don’t know why it’s lower, but I don’t think they lowered it just to get passed up or anything. Frikkin foreign is 720 so I can see this movie passing Frozen 2’s 1.450, cuz this sucker is a beast. And you already know Labor Day is finna give this movie a boost stateside. 700 domestic ain’t Gon be no struggle mane!

The irony is that they hate America more than any other group. They stormed the capital after a democratic elected official won.

They literally call themselves terrorist at a cPAC event.

They call for the destruction of our intelligence agencies and want officials they don't agree with locked up.

These people are insane😕

@IronMan616 - You're wasting time on these cum bubbles.
They're the least understanding of the design and framework of the U.S. Constitution, it's amendments and the Bill of Rights. They are the largest group of hypocrites that exists and can't function in society without mental breakdowns, promoting mental illnesses as sanity, and generally are a large group of incapable, finger pointing, socialists/communists spouting off metric tons of utter horse shit policy and positions.. then they actually vote for masters who keep them on the dole of the tax dollar handouts.
They're soup sandwiches.

Lol.

“ They are the largest group of hypocrites that exists and can't function in society without mental breakdowns, promoting mental illnesses as sanity, and generally are a large group of incapable, finger pointing, socialists/communists ”

That’s a really long way of saying “I have zero friends”.

You talk about normalizing mental illness and here you are thinking Top Gun box office is somehow owning the libs 💀💀

Touch grass sometime, homie.
