BATTLESHIP Sinks but AVENGERS Continues to SMASH!!

Early estimates put "Battleship" at a disappointing $9.5 million while "Avengers" is on track to win the weekend with $50 million.

Wow! Taylor Kitsch just can't seem to catch a break. You know 6 or 7 years ago "Battleship" would have easily been the #1 movie at the box office. I saw "Battleship", and while it's nothing to write home about it did seem to check off all the appropriate boxes that are required of a summer blockbuster. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be enough anymore. The appetite of the masses has reached insatiable levels. At least this means we can look forward to more studio safe, overwhelming comic book movies.

"Dictator" is performing on the softer side domestically, but easily pulls ahead of "What to Expect When You're Expecting"; "Avengers" continues to dominate and will win weekend with $50 million or more.

Universal and Hasbro Entertainment's big-budget Battleship barely made it out of port at the Friday box office, with early estimates showing the action pic grossing a disappointing $9.5 million.

@Grif: Like the "Avengers", "BattleShip" also was released over seas first, giving the bootleggers a chance to get it up on the web for everyone to see. While I may have been wrong about the "Avengers", I am a firm believer that releasing movies like "Battleship" over seas first is a mistake because it mitigates their opening performance here in the States....this could be one possible explanation for "Battleship"'s poor performance.

Or it could just be the awesomeness of the "Avengers" overshadowing everything at the box office...including "Dark Shadows"

@R888 I think it will rival it as far as good film making is concerned but remember it's rated R so it has a smaller audience so it could go either way

@BJD Avengers was released overseas first too. And still no decent bootlegs, where as there's already a 720p bootleg of Battleship. It's clearly because it was a terrible movie, no two ways about it.

@Seabz: Nothing of what u said contradicts anything I said before....Yes "Battleship" was a bad movie but if it hadn't been released overseas first no one would've known that for sure and it would've probably had a better opening.

Avengers is just so good that it doesn't matter that it was released overseas first

Either the ADHD generation came to their senses, or they are grounded at home for not getting good grades this year.

Or maybe they are waiting for their parents to take them to go see Battleshit, but their parents are unwilling to spend their hard earn cash on this pile of shit.

Just my two cents...

Thank god. I saw both The Dictator (very funny) and the Avengers again ,in 3D this time, last night, but I didn't even touch Battleship.

@Seabz

What's funny too is that the 1st good bootleg of AVENGERS (Solid CAM with TeleSync) was released only a couple of days ago!!! In the comments for every AVENGERS bootleg, everyone is encouraging not to watch and to go see it in the theaters.

If a film is good and worth paying for the good rippers will wait to release quality rip's. One of the things i love about the scene and the private torrent community. :)

Avengers (or should I say Hulk- you wouldnt like him when he is angry) already sank Battleship weeks ago. When Universal released Battleship internationally it make 170 million over 3 weeks. In the first 3 days of international release Avengers made 185 million. People seem to have finally smartened up about big budgeted movies that rely on affect and explosions to entertain. Battleshit sounds like this years Green Lantern where there is something after or during the end credits that allude to a sequel that most likely will not be made. Works for me. Avengers rule. best film of the year for me too

Taylor Kitsch sunk my Battleshit!

"Wow! Taylor Kitsch just can't seem to catch a break."

Probably because he makes Ryan Reynolds look like Sir Laurence Olivier when it comes to acting.
