In anticipation of Iron Man 3, the folks from Collider recently asked Don Cheadle about possibly reprising his role as Tony Stark’s best friend and ally, James “Rhodey” Rhodes, in Marvel’s The Avengers sequel; having missed out in last year’s big assembly. Revealing that “conversations have been happening,” the actor also implies that he could maybe cameo in the Marvel’s political thriller, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Watch the video interview with Don Cheadle below!

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Marvel Studios will also release “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

Well, if they can't get Downey back, I guess War Machine's the next best thing

Marvel isn't stupid enough to attempt to replace RDJ with Don Cheadle.

he's in scenes with president, i guess. If Captain America have those kind of scenes too, he will probably have a cameo

With Cap 2 set primarily in Washington, DC, I do think Iron Patriot will be mentioned.

He was iron man for a bit, would make for a neat contract situation..

Sign RDJ to A2, have Don as IM in IM4, then use the transition back in A3...then u only sign RDJ for 2 movies, and 1-2 cameo parts leading into A3...

I wouldn't mind seeing "War Machine" in Avengers 2...However, Don Cheadle/ Rhodes can stay the [frick] out of any more Marvel movies...I will whine about this till I'm blue in the face...Cheadle is a Drama actor...not an action star...each time I see him on screen I cringe...Marvel should have given Howard the money he was asking for...Personally, I would like Tony to cameo in GOTG...so we know he's in space...leaving a spot open for War Machine...then in the third...Tony returns to earth...type deal...And I could care less about Cap 2...worst movie coming out in Phase 2...

Theaters and online ticket-sellers still aren't selling IM3 advance tickets, thanks to the Disney/AMC dispute:

I agree. I think Don Cheadle will take over from RDJ as Iron Man for a few until they recast a new Tony Stark.

Ocelot
Ocelot - 4/22/2013, 11:35 AM
@Lazeedog in the context of the films the iron patriot in iron man 3 is essentially a modern day Captain America and America's offcial and recognised superhero. Whilst Captain America is just an agent of shield
Fogs
Fogs - 4/22/2013, 11:50 AM
@Ocelot - yeah, also since the US government can't control the Avengers (not even Caps) they're going with Iron Patriot so people feel they have a government-driven superhero.
Wallymelon
Wallymelon - 4/22/2013, 12:20 PM
who the [frick] said it was happening at the same time? iron man 3 is pretty much right after the events of the avengers, like 1-3 months later. cap is gonna be like 6-8 months after avengers, maybe more. to establish a reason why the winter soldier is on their radar they would need to give that fool time to be doing thigns on the scene, plus all the random villains and new agents in the film, the relationships are proably goingg to be establiushed a little bit between some, so that again means cap needs more time in movie space before we see his sequel.

I actually think it's a great idea for him to show up (not much more than a short cameo tho) in Cap 2. If he is the United States' official superhero, and Cap 2 is a political thriller with a good portion taking place in Washington, DC, it makes sense that he would be hanging around America's capital. It would also serve the MCU well by further strengthening the adhesion and cohesiveness between the various solo franchises.
Ocelot
Ocelot - 4/22/2013, 12:31 PM
@Fogs exactly, it will be interesting to see what they do in future films, wouldn't surprise me if we get a storyline in a future film which involves them creating their own superhero team to combat or be the own version of the avengers.

that'd be cool if IP was in Cap 2, although it already has a few characters that should be taking up a lot of screen time.

I'd love to see him in A2, it would just show that the threat would be even bigger than in the first one. That they need every hero they can get.
