While the embargo is expected to be lifted sometime tomorrow, here are the first reviews of The Avengers! Needless to say the reaction is so far very positive:

"Four disparate main characters, all with specific personalities, abilities and back stories that need to be wrangled into a cohesive fighting force. It’s a job that only Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, with the backing of S.H.I.E.L.D., is suited to, but it’s the one that Buffy creator Joss Whedon has taken on in bringing Marvel’s Avengers together at last. You don’t envy him the task at hand, but then, it’s not every day that a writer-director is handed what is essentially a massive comic franchise toy box and told to go have some fun. And fun is certainly had here. For Whedon has taken the various threads of the Marvel universe and weaved an impressive tapestry filled with action, humour, charm and heart. There was always the danger that this could become The Tony Stark Hour (Featuring His Costumed Chums), but Whedon is canny enough to realise that he’s got a well-balanced cast, and everyone shoulders their respective portion of the storyline with ease. It’s not really surprising coming from the man who handled a large, charismatic set of characters in the undervalued Serenity, and it’s even more satisfying to see him pull off the same trick twice.

- 4/5, Empire Magazine.

"Under the direction of Joss Whedon the film sails along, switching effortlessly between well-handled drama, carefully-crafted action, and perfectly-timed humour. The director has made his name pulling out great performances from ensemble casts, and Avengers Assemble is no different. Each character gets a chance to shine, without any one outstaying their welcome, or taking over the film. More importantly, the dynamic between the characters – the tension between Stark and Rodgers, the trust between Hawkeye and Black Widow, the respect for Banner, and the fear of the Hulk – feel totally appropriate, and entirely natural. There are a few flaws – the compositing of some shots is ropey (OK, one flaw) – but after a five film build-up, it exceeds every expectation, and is also, to my mind at least, the closest a movie has come to putting the experience of reading a comic on screen. Avengers Assemble is utterly joyous. I challenge anyone to not chuckle and cheer throughout.

- 5/5, Hey U Guys.

"The Avengers suffers from some of the plausibility problems that plague the genre, but when it’s doing either of the two things it does best (making its farfetched characters as believable as you can without going down the gritty Dark Knight route, and breaking into some great action sequences), it lives up to its immense potential. It’s also the first Marvel film to capture the epic scale, excitement and humour of its source material, best captured in the Rampage-style carnage of the film’s huge final conflagration in which the audience is dazzled rather than bewildered by the way Whedon stages his action and uses CGI and alternately teased into bouts of laughter and applause. Superhero fan or not, The Avengers dares you to not leave delighted."

- 4/5, Flicks.

"When kids run around pretending to be Thor and Iron Man, this is what plays out in their heads. At the same time, there's a heft and weight to it, because you care about the characters. And this all adds to perhaps the most surprising thing about "The Avengers." Like fellow T.V. legend J.J. Abrams on "Mission Impossible 3," Whedon's big-screen debut "Serenity" had its moments, but felt more like television than a movie. But like Abrams did on "Star Trek," Whedon has stepped up his game in a major way: the action is clear and coherent, the pacing is tight (it's 140 minutes long, but flies by, and the technical contributions are top-notch across the board, from the Bond-movie production design of James Chinlund ("The Fountain") and the razor-sharp cutting of Jeffrey Ford ("Public Enemies") and Lisa Lassek ("Cabin In The Woods") to Seamus McGarvey's bright cinematography and Alan Silvestri's firmly listenable score. "The Avengers" should never have worked. Too many characters, too many egos, an inexperienced director, an interference-happy studio. That it works as well as it does -- that it's as satisfying a tentpole movie as you could hope for -- is something close to a miracle."

@rockerdude seeing this film last saturday was quite an amazing experience and it was no doubt the most fun I've ever had watching a film at the cinema. The film is no doubt in the current top 3 favorite CBM's of all time(so far).

As a Fan of Batman and been constantly on the DC side of this battle, I can say I am quite excited for The Avengers well more than I have been. Whedon it seems you deserve way more respect and it will be given. Looking forward to seeing it that first week of May.

From New Zealand View:5/5
"he Avengers is an awesome, action-packed extravaganza. The best of its kind thanks to the enviable skill of its writer/director Joss Whedon. It has been a long time since I've seen a film that I would happily walk straight back into the cinema after viewing, and watch all over again.

What's it all about?
THE AVENGERS starts with the evil Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who comes to Earth to enslave humanity, but Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits super heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) to form THE AVENGERS and help save Earth from Loki and his alien army.

The Good
Joss Whedon so sharply defines his avengers that there's one for every child to identify with. It recalls for me moments in my own childhood when my mates would argue over which character we wanted to "be". I can hear children today going through the same. "I wanna be Iron Man!" "No! I wanna be Iron Man!" "OK." "Then, I'll be Hulk." No doubt the only girl in our all boy troop would happily be Black Widow. It was all playful in-fighting, but a necessary ritual before any make believe.

The Avengers builds to a climactic action sequence that's almost exactly the same as Transformers: Dark of the Moon, with one crucial difference. This is not offensively bad. The action sequences are everything I wanted and more, much more. So thrilling, and often intense. The film is almost entirely constructed from two major action set pieces taking place on an enormous floating airship and downtown Manhattan as it becomes under attack from Loki's army.

The Great
What surprised me though was that the movie would be so clear about its controlling ideas. Here we have an action movie that is deeply ambivalent about nuclear energy as both a sustainable energy source and a dangerous weapon, but the film is also fiercely critical of governments that would rather invest in nuclear weapons than sustainable energy. And even though Nick Fury had the foresight to assemble a dream team, he doesn't always have the best intentions.

Worth Seeing?
I wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend THE AVENGERS to those salivating at the opportunity to see all their favourite comic book heroes in one Hollywood blockbuster, but to all men and boys and even girls that cross my path. It is the ultimate in man-child, action-movie entertainment. The best of its kind, dare I say, it maybe the best film I've seen this year, so far anyway".

The Movie Bit:5/5
With the hype machine firing on every cylinder it has, The Avengers (or Avengers Assemble for us Irish and UK folks) has alot to live up to.

And Christ, does it live up to it. The Avengers lives up to every single expectation you’ll have and then some. Over the years, audiences have grown accustomed to a bunch of Marvel super heroes, particularly Iron Man and Hulk who have had more than their fair share of big screen outings, so one would wonder how the hell can they all work together, especially when Thor, Black Widow and Captain America are thrown into the mix, not to mention Hawkeye.

The Avengers is a movie of two different halves. Firstly, each character is introduced and slowly they all become acquainted with one another. And that’s when the fun really starts, as none of them really get on. Constant bickering, snide remarks and an uneasy tension are the norm here, not to mention some woodland destruction. But all that goes out the window when it’s end of the world time, as they put their quirks against one another to one side and and work as a phenomenal team, delivering this years most exciting movie.

Any concerns you might have about balance and what not, forget about it. In the past super hero / comic book movies have fallen by the sword of having too many characters (Spidey 3 springs to mind) but Joss Whedon has delivered an incredibly well balanced script here, where every single lead character seems to have an equal amount of involvement and screen time. It could have been quite easy to have Iron Man (easily the most recognisable character of the group for non fan boys) take up the bulk of this movie, but Tony Stark will have to wait for Iron Man 3 to do that. It’s during the first half of the movie that you realise the complexity of the balancing act Whedon has had to undertake, and as the quirks are ironed out with each other, its quite apparent what an organic script it is and the whole movie flows incredibly well. Some might say it slows down as the characters intertwine with each other, but this is much of a muchness. Otherwise, you’d really be left with half a movie as the introductions to one another are not only vital, but also go about setting the tone. And in any case, the interactions are hilarious at the best of times, with each character outdoing the other scene after scene.

The cast all seem to have a great chemistry together, which translated off screen as well (apparently they would go out after a days shooting together) and this adds to the onscreen hilarity, as the laughs come aplenty. But in particular Jeremy Renner takes to the role of Hawkeye incredibly well and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, seems to have upped his game since Thor, and that was no bad performance. All in all, each actor is brimming with chemistry and presence and again, given that each one of them are more at home in their own movie, its an incredible melding together of the Marvel universe. But if there is one character that steals the show, its the big green rage machine. Hulk, utilising Mark Ruffalo with ILM, is a sight to behold. For a character that doesn’t speak, he is just hilarious, touching and delivers a range of emotions that are as big as himself. Safe to say, this is the best Hulk we’ve seen!

Visually, The Avengers doesn’t disappoint either. Everything from the helicarrier to the new Iron Man suit is just visually astounding. And the new suit removal on the roof of Stark tower is something every home should have. And thats even before you get to the apocalyptic grand finale (I’m not going to mention the epic stuff in the middle with the helicarrier). Speaking of the grand finale, the last 40 odd minutes of The Avengers are completely and utterly insane. You will be hard pushed to find a movie that has delivered action like this in quite some time. It literally is a tour de force in visual effects. The amount of subtle touches, again are equally impressive from water drops to collapsing trees. Your jaw will be on the ground….alot.

At 142 minutes, The Avengers is quite a lengthy movie, but if truth be told it needs it. Again, balance comes to mind and you’re never left hanging around and when business picks up, Whedon can direct some kick ass action sequences. The frantic pacing in the closing quarters are real edge of your seat stuff, and be prepared to applaud on a number of occasions as the set pieces will have you wanting to jump out of your seat. Previous to the finale, there is plenty of other moments which will have you cheering and clapping! This is serious bang for your buck!

Overall, The Avengers is a phenomenal cinematic experience, delivering engaging and hilarious characters with breath taking action coupled with a super script. This is one of the most entertaining films you will see this year and without doubt, the best Marvel movie to date. The Avengers is an experience not to be missed".

I remember certain individuals on this website saying that the critics wouldn't like it because it is just a "popcorn movie". I guess the critics like the popcorn that Joss Whedon is serving.

I have yet to see a review that has given it anything below 4/5. Before seeing it last saturday, I said the film will at least get a 82% on RT. Now that I have seen the film and seeing these reactions so far, I'm gonna say it'll end up with a strong 91%. 89% To be safe.

Nice, based on what I'm seeing here I'd say it'll settle somewhere in the mid-80%'s to low-90%'s on rottentomatoes. Not a masterpiece but a good, strong, thoroughly enjoyable tentpole flick.

Or as Whedon himself said, "Don't go for great, because then it'll be pretentious, just go for really good." -- which he apparently successfully did.
