Joss Whedon Hints That AVENGERS 2 Will See The Heroes Struggle To Remain A Team

We've had Whedon's thoughts on certain characters that may or may not appear in the Marvel sequel, but we haven't had much of an idea of the actual plot from him yet. Now while talking to Vulture about his upcoming take on Much Ado About Nothing, the writer/director drops a hint..

There's been so much speculation about which characters might be joining, and who the villain would be that we haven't really thought too much about the overall team dynamic in The Avengers 2. Will we see some more conflict among the heroes? Of course we had that as the team formed and learned to work together in the first film, but now that they are a solid unit, doesn't necessarily mean it'll be plain sailing. While chatting to Vulture about Much Ado About Nothing, Joss Whedon was asked if that would be a factor, and after making a joke about it, he confirms that the site is on to something.

VULTURE: "So for Avengers 2, you have a draft done, you start shooting in early 2014. What will be the main conflict this time, now that they've formed a team? Trying to stay a team? Becoming their own worst enemy? Because these are not folks who can pull off making a movie out of a Shakespeare play in twelve days."

WHEDON: "No, they're not. And actually, that's the middle of the movie, them trying to. It's the Avengers trying to do Measure for Measure, and it doesn't go well. It's very exciting, especially in 3-D. [Laughs] The rest of it, you're right about — it was necessary to build this team, but what happens to them and to the world when they actually exist as a team? How does that work? And I have until we shoot in February to make sure that I'm right."

Obviously we expected SOME conflict, as that was one of the elements that made the first movie so enjoyable -- but could it be taken up a notch for the sequel? Will we see some characters go their separate ways perhaps? Sound off with your thoughts below.

They can't do that storyline yet.. not until Wanda is really introduced.....

I can't wait until FF, Spidy and X-Men finally are ALL Marvel again, so they can do Civil War! lol.. yeah.. right... I may as well just hope for the animated version

I can see the team still having conflict but you can't do hero for hero battle again. That would be wasting the potential. Just give us Masters Of Evil setup by Thanos in the shadows. That's damn fine movie magic right there.

i wouldn't mind seeing the avengers take on the hulk, that would probably go down as the best scene in a comic book movie ever!

Thor has his own agenda and loyalties. Cap has his own agenda and loyalties. Tony's a free spirit and don't want to be controlled or dictated to by any other force. Wanda and Pietro main priority are each other. They will work together like a team but they're going to conflict like a Mother#^#*@# when things go south.

it's probably going to look like another TV movie... Shame.

Avengers was shot with the Arri Alexa cameras and had a great cinematographer and yet, with Whedon's shitty directing, the more than poor cinematography it became a real TV movie just by the technical sides. Marvel should invest in IMAX camera's already but since they won't do that, cheap bastards, they should go with the CineAlta f65 and shoot the whole damn movie in 4K. Wouldn't be a bad thing if they partially used those new digital IMAX camera's as well.

I think I'm more concerned about him doing a Much Ado movie. The 1993 version with Branagh and Thompson was fantastic, so why ruin its memory! I love when directors think they can do Shakespeare...hahaha!

I love all comic book movies (the kid in me), but I'm still in the minority of people that thought Avengers was just ok. It was a good movie to me...not great.

And when it doesn't play out like it does in the comics *cough* Mandarin *cough*, well... my baby cousin without her bottle has whined less.

What inner turmoil kid? It's called negotiations, adults do it. Get a real job and you might understand it one day. I wouldn't sign either until I got a deal that was satisfactory for me and my family.

Don't worry kid, at the end of the day all of these people will be on set and well paid.

@Philvis I saw a scene between the two leads on Whedon's Much Ado yeah it pales in comparison to Branagh and Thompson. Especially the Benedict character, but I don't knock him for trying.

Avengers 2 will be like Iron Man 3. It will suck to comic book fans but will be box office gold. I cant wait until a director finally has the guts to make a good comic book movie that most fans will approve of. Blade 2 and Spiderman 2 came very close to that.

@wcwpoet - I saw a trailer for it I believe a month or two back and just rolled my eyes. I didn't realize Whedon was attached to it until this article. Branagh's was very whimsical and just felt like Shakespeare. This new one just felt blah from what I saw.

@BlackHulk

"I cant wait until a director finally has the guts to make a good comic book movie that most fans will approve of."

Will never happen. Not because a director hasn't had the guts (they have more than several times) but because the fans like here are too interested in fighting amongst themselves. For instance, when this Man of Steel movie starts raking in cash like it's got access to Scrooge McDuck's vault, some of us will be happy because Man of Steel is a great movie and while we can look forward to a sequel, we will also hope it will give WB/DC confidence to make movies about it's other characters like Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, etc. Hell, even a Justice League movie or World's Finest. However others will like it more, if not for the sole reason of being able to throw it in someone else's face. Some overbearing, pro-Marvel and/or anti-DC fan or anyone they think has offended them. That will divide people far more than the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 could on it's worst day.

I hope they stay together throughout the film even if it's a struggle. The Avengers was a good ensemble movie in the sense that it spread the screen time and development pretty well, but they weren't a team until the end. It was a lot of individual clashes. (not complaining. it made sense for the formation story) Aside from the final battle we didn't get much of a chance to see them as a unit and get a feel for what they're all like together.

I'm gonna write (stalk) Whedon on twitter... It's hard for us to judge what the Avengers 2 gonna be cuz we don't know how the stories of the other movies play out.. THEY DO.

but I don't want another movie of them not getting along. They did that already... I'm ready to see them enjoy each others company... Stark and Rogers mutual respect and friendship has YET to make it on screen. Thor and Hulk fighting EVERY time they see each other, but just because they like to. Hawk eye and Hulk's relationship like EMH.

I'm afraid they are just gonna bicker again, fight each other then have to assemble again for some threat.... That's a downer
