Joss Whedon Says He's "Torn" About Returning To Direct AVENGERS 2

The director briefly touches on returning to helm the now officially coinfirmed sequel to The Avengers. Will we get a second movie out of Mr Whedon? It's still up in the air, but he has some "cool ideas"..

With the first movie currently making all the money there is on the planet, Marvel have confirmed what we already knew to be inevitable - we will see a sequel to The Avengers. But will we see Joss Whedon back in the director's chair? Kevin Feige has already revealed that there is an option in his contract, but will the man himself want to take advantage of it? While speaking to LA Times' Hero Complex Whedon sounds uncertain, and definitely seems to be in two minds about it..

“You know, I’m very torn. It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

I'm sure he's just feeling a bit jaded after all the hard work from the first movie and will realize in time that he must return. It's really very simple, he has no choice! Seriously though, to me he sounds worried that a sequel might veer out of his control a little but I really doubt after the massive success of the first movie, Marvel are going to be too heavy handed with Whedon's ideas for the second. Who knows, I think he'll be back but we shall see. I don't suppose I need to ask what you guys want to see happen?

For the rest of the interview - in which Whedon discusses Avengers/Buffy/Astonising X-Men comparisons, as well as revealing who he prefers between that team and the crew of Serenity - click the link below.

In other words "I really want to do it, but no one expected the huge success of the first one, so now I am holding out for more money to do a sequel"

Clever, very clever.

He directed the film he always wanted to make. It's really up to him whether or not to come back for another one. Of course, it would be awesome if he did, though now he knows how HUGE the process is.

I think its kool how they said Marvel Studios are permitted to use S.W and Quicksilver, so long as they dont mention who their father is or anything relating to the X-men Universe.

Gotta love loop holes in business sometimes :D

... "telling someone else's story."

Yeah, but what a wonderful story it is!

Whedon just can't bail now! Just look at this strong start!

And look at how he proved all the doubters wrong. SO MANY people said he couldn't hack it!

He oughta hang in there and realize just how lucky he is to have the chance to helm this beast! Yeah it's alot of work but he's a Marvel fan! He's living the dream! Literally!

@ Bane5000: Is that true? About SW and Quicksilver?

Think it would be legal for them to mention that they are mutants?

I'd love if they did a storyline where The Avengers are prisoner on a completely seperate planet and have to escape with their lives, at all costs possible. Something about The Hulk in chains seems cool to me.

@ juggernaut

Bane is right, Kevin feige said that. Marvel can use SW and quicksilver as long as they dont mention magneto or the x-men (and im assuming mutants in general), and fox can use them as long as they dont mention the avengers.

@CorndogBurglar I don't blame him either, it is Marvels fault for not locking him in for future movies, especially when it seems to be common practice when these franchises start up.

As a loooonnggtime Avengers fan, I have to say I would be fine with him not returning or even seeing another Avengers film. I waited so long to see something on screen that I never imagined would actually happen, that I am perfectly good with one absolute instant classic film as opposed to a bunch of sequels that could be good or bad.

If he comes back great. If he doesn't, thank you very much for this one Joss.
