Joss Whedon Talks The Avengers; Comments On His "Comic Book" Directing Style!

The director comments briefly on respecting the past movies while bringing his own unique style to The Avengers, while also comparing his job to "hiring all the composers of all the other movies to work together on the score"...

Talking to Total Film, director Joss Whedon has opened up a little more about his ongoing work on The Avengers, which is just a few more shooting days away from wrapping up filming altogether. Discussing what it's been like bringing his own unique directorial style to the movie, he also points out that he's being careful not to lazily blend the superheroes together.

"You have to respect the realities of the other movies. But visually this is very much my own thing. My style is very comic-book-like anyway, so I’m trying to do things the way I always do".

"Part of Iron Man’s thing was, 'Wow, this feels just like us! Asgard, less so, and Captain America was a nostalgia piece, so basically it would have been like hiring all the composers of all the other movies to work together on the score."

What do you guys make of Whedon's comments? I don't think we need to worry too much about any Ang Lee style comic book panels popping up throughout the movie, as it seems like Whedon is instead referring to his directing style as a whole. Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

I am very curious about how Whedon will handle Tony Stark's reaction to aliens, technology that appears to be magic, and other things that out to turn Stark's world upside down.

With a whole team movie like the Avengers we get to see all the characters interacting all at once on the screen at different moments. What made the panels so great is they worked just like a comic book should make each moment, and each characters dialogue that more dynamic.

I figured this movie was going to feel more like Iron Man in style than the other ones. But that's good! Iron Man was totally an action movie and that's what I expect.

What are you talking about? The panels are win, so was HULK.Watch it again, it gets better and better.

It's not his directing that concerns me, it's his writing. His tendency toward "hip" dialogue has me worried that this will be "Buffy the Avenger."

I wouldn't mind the panels, a la, ANG LEE. That wasn't the problem with his movie, that was actaully pretty cool. The problem with that film was that it was BORING at times, BANA always had this vacant look in his eyes, and the last 20min were atrocious!
Shaman
Shaman - 8/31/2011, 10:49 AM
He means in the storytelling sort of way. Not the "visual" way like Ang Lee did. Come on, every one in the business thought it sucked, they aren't about to repeat the same mistake on a film they've been hyping through five different other ones. That would be called suicide.
Greengo

The more this guy talks the more nervous I get.

All Joss has to do is not drop the ball.

DON'T [frick] IT UP WHEDON!!!!!!

Speaking of composers, who WILL be doing the music for this movie? And will they be creating all new themes for each character or incorporating the previous scores?

I wonder if they've already been shopping around for composers.

Until he brings us a true box office flop, i'm fine with him. There are a LOT worse choices, honestly. I'm sure Gavin Hood's free at the moment.
jjmeylar
jjmeylar - 8/31/2011, 11:13 AM
I hope that he doesn't mean he'll be doing panels like every episode of "Beetleborgs".......or what Ang Lee did to "Hulk".

@Shaman I really hope he doesn't bring us a true box office flop with Avengers. *fingers crossed*

TheStranger

He is talking about his directing style, the comic book panels that Ang Lee did are not a directing style that is another part of the process entirely that has nothing to do with what happens on set, and they aren't even done filming yet, get a grip people.
ksommer
ksommer - 8/31/2011, 11:28 AM
The really important thing about this is that it's Marvel Studios!!

Do you think that Marvel would let Joss do that? Conversation would go like this:
Joss: "So I'm thinking of doing the panels like in Hulk"
Marvel: "Oh really? Do you remember that movie? Box office failure. Not so much."
Joss: "Please"
Marvel: "Yeah no..."
Greengo
Greengo - 8/31/2011, 11:36 AM
What is a comic book directing style anyways?
phoe1
phoe1 - 8/31/2011, 11:56 AM
i think he means his general directing style is a bit comic booky. i doubt he means any specific visuals or techniques with that. he s talkin about his whole back catalogue. i guess u cud say his style is "poppy" as well. its new and relatively easy on the eyes. hes no branagh who will have certain angles and reverse shot combinations that come off as very classical.
Greengo
Greengo - 8/31/2011, 12:19 PM
CATFA seemed to have a subtle comic book vibe, imo.

If the Avengers turns out anything like serenity/Firefly than that would be awesome. He knows there is a lot of pressure on him and I can't wait to see what he creates.

Whedon's movie directing resume is so thin that it is tough to tell what he will do with the Avengers, good or bad.

Ang Lee - comic book style - directing ?

Serenity was a nice surprise of a movie. And Ang Lees "The Hulk" deserves more credit.

Anyways, can't wait!

I'm REALLY surprised to see so many COMIC fans HATED the panels in ANG LEE'S HULK!!!

It was a shody film, but not because of the panels...
