Obviously he has never worked on anything of this magnitude but he should be a good fit. He might need some help on the action sequences (cue Letterier) but he has a good grasp on drama and storytelling, imo. I have to say I am happy with this if it turns out true.

This is a horrible choice... hes going to make avengers cheesy and campy like johnston is doing for captain america.

Whedon is a good choice, but I agree that this is much bigger than anything he's done..and he doesn't have much experience. But working with the other guys he could be great for Avengers. One things for sure, it won't just be a series of action set pieces with cgi all over the place and [frick] all story.

Love the choice.

He can handle ensembles, character dev and action - check out the action scenes in Serenity, they're cool as heck.

Before Iron Man, Favs directed Zathura and Elf. Give Whedon a chance. I think he's going to rock.

I'm not familiar with his work, so I won't judge, but I really wanted Louis. Ah well. Does anyone know any films hes directed?

I don't think he should do such a big movie but I loved Buffy the vampire slayer and Angel but he shouldn't do the avengers J.J. Abrams or Leterrier are better choices.

MF- If you haven't seen the Firefly TV series, run - don't walk - and get it. Then watch Serenity. It's some of the best TV that ever was. Short, but so sweet.

I think he can pull it off.I assume if Favreau is producing, then he will probably help him out a little.Nice find @MF!

Never really seen any of his stuff... but considering I had never heard of Favreau or Letterier until they directed their Marvel flicks, I won't make my decision until I see what he has to offer.

I'm just happy that they are even making an Avengers movie. We should all calm down and wait till the Avengers movie starts filming before we start hating the (possible) director.

Everyone raves about Serenity so hopefully Whedon can pull it off. Marvel will keep his trademark 'cutesiness' on a short leash, hopefully. Favreau is going to executive produce so hopefully his influence will come through as well. So, I guess I'm hoping this movie will turn out okay. I hope Whedon will be scared as hell to screw it up which will elevate his performance on this one. Marvel hasn't screwed up yet!

@MF - check out Firefly from the beginning. It was terrific show. The camera techniques they used for special effects were groundbreaking - then copied in BSG, and now practically used by everyone, including Favs.

But the true fun of Firefly are the characters and storytelling. Whedon can be over the top sometimes, even cheesy, but he's going to have Feige to keep him grounded.

I'm officially excited.

@MF whedon did a lot of writing and producing, more than he has directing. he did direct some of the best episodes of buffy and angel and firefly. but serenity was really good and he directed that. might be cool to see what he can do when he is given something like this. like 80sface said, favreau didnt do anything spectacular or on the blockbuster level until he was given IM.

I've been behind Marvel alot, but I really hope this isnt true. Whedon has done one movie, and thats Serenity. Although I loved firefly as an entertaining tv show, serenity never soared or had any marks of something resembling greatness. He's solid (you could say) with TV and writing. But directing a big movie? I have doubts, and would like someone more tested.

Whedon strikes me as a guy who could direct the X-Men very well, with a great understanding of those kinds of characters and plots. But something as classical and straight up badass as the Avengers is something he doesn't work with too much.

So? It tried to emulate a super cool anime..the nerve! Only the basic concept was similar anyway. I think its one of the greatest tv shows ever myself..but horses for courses.

I think its strange that they are thinking of a director for this before Cap and Thor come out, I mean surely they will want to see how those films turn out first?

He can be a bit hokey, but so what, life is hokey at times! He also gives his characters and stories heart, something that LL seems to have no concept of. Like I said, if this is true he will need a shit load of guidance most likely but I would be more than happy with this choice.

Even though it'd cost marvel quite a lot, i think they should put John and Leterrier as 'co-directors' or something on those lines - Fav's very good when it comes to storytelling and paceing, Leterrier is good for the mindless action.

After all, avengers is about a team of heroes. Why not a team of directors? :P

@invalensname - never a fan of Buffy or Angel either, which is why I was shocked by how good Firefly was.

@DannyRand - the fight scene btwn Mal and Chiwetel Ejiofor, the fight scene in the bar when River goes nuts, the space battle scene with the Reavers... goosebumps. I think Whedon can direct.

Despite SirPrize doubling for Ms. Deborah Downer, check it out if you haven't seen it.
