Joss Whedon Updates On THE AVENGERS Sequel, S.H.I.E.L.D. And Oversight Of PHASE TWO

Declaring his followup to The Avengers will go “Deeper,” rather than “bigger,” writer-director Joss Whedon offers updates for Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series and oversight of other Phase Two movies.

During the Critic's Choice Awards, MTV News caught up with the writer/director of The Avengers, Joss Whedon, when he offered an update for the highly-anticipated 2015 sequel. In addition, the critically acclaimed filmmaker also offered insight into his role as Creative Consultant of other Phase Two films, while also revealing when filming will kickoff for the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot, and more.

“Don't go bigger; go deeper,” Whedon told MTV News, talking about how he plans to follow up the first Avengers film. “All of these people have met, so you have that out of the way. Now you can spend your time just digging in — and by digging in, I mean with a scalpel, to cause pain. Something I always say to executives is, 'the first weekend is your job and the second weekend is mine,'” said Whedon. “If it had done an amazing job on the first weekend and then disappeared from the screens, then that would be my fault. That was the one I was sort of counting on.” While he just turned in the sequel's outline, Whedon says he's “a couple of months” away from finishing his “Avengers 2” script.

And filming for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show should start filming “A week from Tuesday. You have to bring a bit of spectacle to [S.H.I.E.L.D.]; it's got to be bigger than your average cop show,” he said. “But at the end of the day, it's about the peripheral people. It's about the people on the edges of the grand adventures. The whole point of the show is that even with all these big things, the little things matter. It's about people who don't have super powers. There will be some people with powers, there will be FX, and there will be the spectacle of science-fiction storytelling — but all played on a very human, small level. That's the appeal of the thing.”

As creative consultant of Marvel's other Phase Two installments, Whedon says, “I read all the scripts and I give notes on everything. I'll look at cuts when they're ready to show me. I'll talk to directors if they want to. I try to make myself useful without being intrusive. I've gotten to be a part of all of them. That's a dream job for a kid like me.” Whedon also says he's yet to see a cut from Iron Man 3.

Marvel Studios already describes their highly-anticipated sequel to the No. 3 highest grossing film of all time, “Marvel's The Avengers,” as another “big cinematic event.” And expected to feature the reassembly of iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow & Nick Fury taking on a new unexpected enemy, new additions to the superhero team up of a lifetime are possible.

Expecting reprisals from Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” sequel is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. And set for release May 1, 2015, the film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to the sequel, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

It will be interesting. It has the opportunity to fill the void left by shows like Fringe (or X-files) before it. A "police" drama with a supernatural twist.

With all the things we've heard so far, granted its not much, but I have a hard time believing Thanos is the Avengers 2 villain.

"Don't go bigger, go deeper"

"It will be a more personal story"

Those two things alone sound like Ultron to me. Not only that, but Thanos is supposedly the villain in GOTG. It just sounds to me like Pym will create Ultron and he will turn evil. It wouldn't be able to get more personal, and deep than that, right?

I'm just hoping for an Iron Fist/ Luke Cage appearance or reference in the show somewhere
TheRedSkull
TheRedSkull - 1/11/2013, 9:45 AM
Or at least expand the universe, bring in references to other heroes who keep to themselves or have adventures of their own to pursue

And I'm worried the quality of SFX will get toned down considering it's TV now and not Avengers scale

To be honest the avengers wasn't the best movie in the phase one project if it wasn't for the hulk it would just be average especially after I liked IM, IH and Thor but I do have high hopes for IM3, THOR2 and CATWS. So with the.characters firmly established Avengers2 should be a whole lot better and.with better villains because I'm sick of Loki even though he was great in Thor and avengers but they need more bad ass villains who won't make ironman spend half an hour fix the helicarrier lol.

I trust Whedon to deliver us a second Avengers movie that is worth every minute of the wait. I hope he takes as long as he needs to get the story right. As for our villain? I'd love to see Kang or Ultron if he doesn't want to deliver Thanos right away.

@Happy11 - matter of opinion. To me it isn't just the best of phase 1 but also the best comicbook movie EVAH!

i think theres going to be atleast 4 or 5 avengers movies...

next villian in avengers 2 will most likely be - Masters of evil (loki, enchantress w/ skurge the executioner, abomination, baron zemo & radioactiive man)

Avengers 3 will be Ultron

Avengers 4 & 5 will be thanos, i hope they just build up thanos through all the movies and bring the pain at the end!

Why when Videos are posted in articles can they not be made to be available everywhere in the world? It sucks coming into some articles & not being able to watch some or most of the videos, gets annoying.

Still, great words from Joss, everything seems to be shaping up great for both the SHIELD Show & Avengers 2.

Love the fact he gets to over see things & have input / ideas for other directors on their Phase 2 movies as well, I could imagine him & Gunn having great collabaration on GOTG.

Surprised he hasn't seen any cut of Iron Man 3 yet though since it seems to be so far on & is only 4 months away from release.

I also hope he reveals or tells us who the other villain he had planned originally to be in Avengers along with Loki.

Hope they make it into Avengers 2 whoever it was & he reveals after the movies release who it was if they are indeed used in Avengers 2.

Seeing out of all the Directors we have so far for each movie of Phase 2 that most of us seem to find the Russo's the weakest of the choices, I hope Joss has quite a bit of tips, advice & input on that film & I hope Marvel get Brubaker lending a hand to the Russo's as well with some input.

I feel that this Cap movie needs to be the most serious tone & seriously taken of all the Phase 2 movies.

I don't think Thanos is going to be the primary heavy in Avengers 2. I think we may see his handy work, but I don't see him being the primary villain. Maybe I'm wrong.
