The most recent visual effects studio revealed that contributed to special effects of Marvel's The Avengers summer blockbuster is Luma Pictures. Reuniting with Marvel Studios, Luma worked on the movie's Helicarrier bridge, Thor donning his armor and summoning a tornado, and various exterior environments.

Executive VFX Supervisor Payam Shohadai says, "For us, the most artistically engaging scene was the wide shot of Thor and Coulson on the Helicarrier bridge at night. This shot encompassed every little detail of the bridge, and required a lot of rigorous lighting and look development to capture a realistic look. The asset was heavy and contained a lot of metallic materials with blurry reflections, which are notoriously difficult to render clean."

"This was the third full show for us using Arnold [rendering software], and we continued to develop our tools and techniques around this exciting renderer," added CG Supervisor Richard Sutherland. "To speed workflow during our look development phase, we developed an illumination caching system for preview renders, and tweaked the translation of large numbers of objects. For the exterior shots, with large-scale volumetric clouds, we rebuilt and enhanced a cloud building system based on Maya fluids. There were several shots of Thor summoning a Thor-nado, which gave us a chance to brush off and improve some of our FumeFX to Maya pipeline."

In addition to updating their visual effects reel, embedded below, with brief footage from the movie, Luma Pictures also provided high-res still photos showcasing their work. Check them out below!

Hey Grif why do you use a teddy bear as a avatar? I thought teddy bears that grown men use as icons are a hidden meaning for something darker!?

@@Grif.....bro...I'm finding it harder and harder to hate you every day...something isn't right...the earth is out of balance...Santa Clause is real....there's something...just....wrong

You're making more and more sense every day...

I miss the cynical, Transformers-hating Grif we all knew and loved...

JackyTimish: as someone who's both watched it during his shift (I manage a theater) and multiple viewings, the A doesn't fall off. During the first attacks, the S and T fall off, while finally the R and K fall last. (I actually might have it backwards, but either way, the A never falls.)

I would crap my pants if there was ever a Justice League Movie. Avengers was great and I hope that DC comes to their senses and tries to ride the success of the Avengers. I believe the first Batman movie changed things for comicbook movies, and now The Avengers movie has changed it again for the good!

We are all winners because the bar keeps getting higher and higher, and in the end we are all the winners.

Well I must say that Thor, Captain America, Hulk 1, 2 and IronMan 2 were just Meh!!!! It took all of them in one movie to make it a hit. But we have to give Avengers the props it deserves, but I am glad to see that most of the Batman movies can hold its own at the box office.

I also have to admit that Black Widow is way hotterrrrrrrrrrr than the current Cat Woman.

nice chitauri design, would have been cooler in the movie. I want to see that photo when the avengers are knocked away from that explosion in the hellcarrier when Hawkeye attacks the hellcarrier.

Guys I actually like the Chitari in the film more than this concept, in the movie they look more, organic or natural than these. These concepts look more machine then alien
