Possible Confirmation On Skrulls As Villains in The Avengers

Possible Confirmation On Skrulls As Villains in The Avengers

Which alien race do you think will be portrayed as villains in The Avengers? Take a look at which one an unnamed source close to filming in Cleveland says it will be.

With all the images and videos hitting in the last few days seemingly verifying aliens as one of the antagonists in Marvels upcoming Avengers film, the hot topic has turned to "which race is Marvel using?" People have been arguing the point nonstop since the first image of police officers shooting at the sky appeared. Is it those nasty, shape shifting Skrulls? Maybe it will be the Kree? Could they possibly go with the Badoon?

While browsing around for new set videos and photo's from The Avengers filming currently going on in Cleveland, I ran across this eye catching piece of information from Michael Sangiacomo on CLEVELAND.COM. In the middle of reporting on what downtown Cleveland is going through while in the midst of filming, he tossed the following juicy and unexpected tidbit into the article.

A person close to the filming confirmed a long-held belief that the villains in the film -- besides Thor's evil half-brother, Loki -- are the shape-changing aliens, The Skrulls, who have been perennial villains in the Marvel Universe since 1961.

As usual with any report not coming directly from a named source, this should be taken with a grain of salt until verified but I thought the possibility was worth sharing. I would venture a guess that the real confirmation on just which alien race is attacking will come at this weekends D23 Expo.

Joss Whedon's The Avengers starring Chris Evans, Cris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston is slated for release May 4 2012.

Nope. I'm betting by "close to the filming" they mean someone whose been stalking the set everyday. And they're going by what they saw on Twitter with the "AvengersCLE" hashtag.

Honestly, I think the most important thing that we know is that there will in fact be aliens in the movie. Doesn't really matter what they're called...if they'll be called anything at all.

Not a surprise at all, I mean Skrulls or Chitauri one of them is going to be a shape changing alien because the Kree are humanoids that could be done with makeup especially after all the negative publicity the Green Lantern CGI overuse got.

Fox probably wanted to go with the Skrulls as the villains in the second Fantastic Four but didn't have the rights to them or Namor so they went straight to the Galactus story.

@DCMarvelFreshman How do you know it's not the Skrulls after all? You keep saying that you know who the aliens are in the movie, but I have yet to hear an explanation of how you even know this.

the kree & skrulls is what i want the most but i suppose any alien race would do as long as they're ones that feature in the comics & not something just made for the film.

They're all wrong! It's the Mole Man and his legion of underground minions!

Not really, but that would be cool. Maybe in the next FF flick...

It just makes sense it's the Skrulls. The only way Marvel would not use them as the alien race is if Fox owned the rights to them along with FF4. Too many indications to ignore that it's anybody else. Plus they open up a world of opportunities to introduce other characters not in the MCU yet. If it's not them it would be disappointing unless it was the Kree, but only those two would make me happy.

The thing is, the Skrulls only work as a slow burn, who-has-been-replaced plot, which I don't think works great for an introductory film that already features all of the different Avengers plus Loki and the cosmic cube. A more brute force invasion makes better sense there, and the Kree provide that (where as the most interesting aspect of the Skrulls would be wasted) plus the Kree offer the opportunity to open the door to Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, and offer Ronan the Accuser as a villain. The Skrulls don't get you anywhere in the big picture.

With the Skrulls, you just get "is so-and-so a Skrull?" plot lines, and that seems a step too far in a film that should be focusing on the Avengers getting to know one another. Once the team is established and trusts each other, then the opportunity for betrayal and paranoia is ripe... Not beforehand.

It's gonna be the Skrulls.

1) Who were the ones that created the Cosmic Cube, again?

2) Wouldn't it make sense that Loki was trying to get the Cube to bring the Skrulls down to Earth?
SageMode
SageMode - 8/17/2011, 3:58 PM
Im willing to put money on it being the Skrulls.
And why has Loki been constantly referred to as Thor's HALF-brother when he's really his STEP-brother?
HelaGood
HelaGood - 8/17/2011, 4:01 PM
@RockNRollCC nope.

1. AIM
2. He could bring ANY race to Earth if he wanted to...

So is Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet completely ruled out as a possibility?
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 8/17/2011, 4:04 PM
Oh, and let's not forget the Kree Supreme Intelligence, or how they are the underpinnings of most of the cosmic side of Marvel, tied to the Celestians, the Inhumans, and so on. With the Skrulls you get the Super-Skrull (who can't be used) and... Pretty much nothing.

As for them not needing motion capture, it depends on their outfits. Most of RDJ's Iron Man suit is computer generated in action scenes... And if there are going to be many, many Kree then they certainly don't want to have to spend a lot of time and money building practical suits for all of them. Whatever the Alien race might be, I'm pretty sure they'll be wearing something more substantial than the usual comic-book spandex.

RockNRollCC - 8/17/2011, 4:11 PM
@Hela AIM was NOT the first to develop it.

"The Cosmic Cube is actually a containment device created by various civilizations throughout the Marvel Universe at various times, including the Skrulls (creators of the Cube that would eventually evolve into the Shaper of Worlds)..."

and what other races have been hinted at by the studios? I can see the Skrulls working, even tho it may be too big for the first movie, but i can still see it happening. Kree for a sequel, possibly, and Kree/Skrull war in the future? Who knows...

RockNRollCC
RockNRollCC - 8/17/2011, 4:14 PM
I really wanna see Thanos, tho. They have:

Infinity Gauntlet
Cosmic Cube

Make it so, Marvel. If not this movie, hint at him for a future movie

HelaGood - 8/17/2011, 4:19 PM
@RockNRollCC there are other shape-shifting races in this universe...
