RUMOR: Joaquin Phoenix Offered 'Hulk' Role in The Avengers

With Edward Norton no longer Hulking-out, the rumors have begun with CHUD saying that Marvel has offered the role to Joaquin Phoenix. Check it Out!

Marvel has confirmed that The Incredible Hulk star, Edward Norton will not be Hulking-out in the highly anticipated Avengers movie, due to the Oscar nominee being difficult to work with. Though Norton's agent disagrees, Marvel will proceed to finding an actor to feel the Goliath's shoes.

Now Devin Faraci from CHUD is reporting that...."Reliable sources tell me that Marvel has already put out an offer, and the actor they've spoken to is Joaquin Phoenix, believe it or not. Phoenix is taking time to mull over the offer and the bigger implications - Marvel may yet resurrect the Hulk franchise - but Marvel hopes to have him in place by Comic Con, which is when they want to announce their new Bruce Banner."

Joaquin Phoenix, 35, five years younger than Norton, is best known for his role as the villainous "Commodus" in Ridley Scott's Gladiator, and as country singer "Johnny Cash" in the movie Walk The Line. The Academy Award nominee has had a few stumps in his career leading up to his supposed retirement as an actor, and the his last movie being James Gray's 2008 Two Lovers. So Phoenix may turn down the offer, but Marvel has a history of resurrecting careers with an unpleasant history,(Robert Downey Jr. & Mickey Rourke) so who knows.

CHUD goes on to say that..."I'm hearing that whoever plays Banner will be the lowest man on The Avengers pay totem pole. And if Phoenix doesn't take the part, Marvel will quickly go to someone else."

With Joss Whedon directing, The Avengers supposedly begins production February 2011 with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) confirmed. And Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Nathan Fillion (Ant-Man), and Eva Longoria (Wasp) unannounced. The film hits theaters May 4, 2012.

All I want to see is the HULK anyway!

Norton then I do believe Marvel has lost
their minds!

Meh. For some reason, I really just don't like Phoenix. Something about him, can't put my finger on it. I'd much rather see Sharlto Copley take over for Norton (ugh). That man deserves some mainstream recognition.

Wow - I was SOOO gutted to hear that Norton was out. Angry in fact BUT I like this casting idea ALOT!!!

I like Banner when he is more of a twitchy, highly strung nut literally scared of his own shadow. Phoenix would be excellent at that.

HOWEVER my main concern is that The Avengers doesn't become the RDJ show with him overshadowing the other actors. I fear the two Chris' might let that happen. A Norton or a Phoenix wouldn't.

Hmm......

"This could work couldnt it???"

Much as i like him, I know that Edward Norton has kind of a rep for being difficult sometimes and he's also not the sort thats gona do as the others have done and sign up for multiple film deals..

Jaoquin might do just that though'. :-P

Sucks as much as it might that Edward Norton is not returning.. Its still at a stage where its forgettable. peeps would not even have had to see the Hulk in order to catch up with Iron-man 1+2, Cap, Thor, then Avengers onwards.

An from that you get an actor who (if he signs up) signs up for multiple films (avengers or hulk solo's) an keeps the continuity solid :-) ... Long as he doesnt suffocate his dad an make designs on his sister again' :-S. hehe.

Elle @ Good point!!! Norton doesn't strike me as the type of guy who would sign multiple film deals unless he has some creative input written into his contract or can get certain garantees.

And to be fair to him I think he has a point. TIH, to my mind, could have been a lot better in terms of plot and characters, etc. For all it's pace and fast editing I didn't get any real feeling for the characters and their relationships. I always thought that was what EN was worried about when he was helping to rewrite certain stuff.

I guess what we have learnt is that Marvel have a casting budget that is probably smaller than their ambition. Which ain't surprising seeing as what their trying to do hasn't really been attempted before.

@TruePunishment: Heh, I like this idea as well. Feige could announce this at Comic-Con:
The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. With that, we are pleased to announce CGI Ed Norton!
CGI Ed Norton: I comply, Mr. Feige and shall do your bidding. Mr. Whedon, feel free to direct me and write for me what you choose. I have been created to comply with your direction. I am CGI Ed Norton.

Thanks @ Orphix, :-)

Yeah, I think in the long run they're trying to establish a interlapping universe that works and all the important players are locked into.

They had a hiccup with Terrance Howard who was the highest paid actor on the first Iron man movie and it was a fairly throw away performance.

When i watched 'Iron man 1' again a little while after watching '2' i didint even relate Terrance Howard's character as being 'James Rhodes', just a buddy-type character with no relation to War Machine. In my mind Don Cheadle plays the part and now its solid for however many films he's signed up for.

Didint they say somewhere before Incredible Hulk's release that all actors on were signed to return EXCEPT Edward Norton because he had a "different" contract?

Off key a little', but i wonder what RDJ's future will be?
Far as i know he's the only main star that isnt signed for like 9 movies or whatever (still sighned for a couple though) and he is quite open about bein grateful to Marvel an co for getting him where he is again.

...... I wonder if at some point they'll follow the comic storyline as an exit for Robert Downey Jr when he wants it (temporary or longterm) where he passed on Stark Enterprises and the role of Iron man to Rhodes? :-)

Elle @ Yep - ya right about the Ed Norton's contract thing. Liv Tyler, Tim Roth and Tim Blake Nelson were all signed up for more than one film. Norton wasn't. I guess he was making sure he wasn't the face of a potentially rubbish franchise.

RDJ has described himself as an informal 'ambassador' for Marvel simply because he is the only lead actor knocking about who has been in a Marvel Studios film and keen to do more.

I guess the future for him is to do The Avengers and may be a third Ironman film and then call it a day. By then he will be in his 50's and can hand over the lead role to Don Cheadle as Rhodey...maybe?? Having said that I am sure RDJ will always support Marvel and make an special effort to do any cameo as Tony Stark when they need him.

Thats my guess anyway.

Still sad about Norton tho. In terms of casting the only main players we have seen on screen with any continuity are RDJ as Tony Stark, Sam Jackson as Fury and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts!!!

At least they kept Paul Bettany as the voice of Jarvis!

If we can't have Norton - then I for one would be completely open to the idea of Phoenix :) 'Signs' is one of my all time favorite movies, I love him. I think he could do great.

The only thing is - if this is true, he's gonna say no, considering his retirement and that...
