From excerpts in Variety's spotlight on Robert Downey Jr., and him being honored the American Cinematheque Award, included are quotes from actors and directors who've had the opportunity to worth with the 'Iron Man' star. And among those people are The Avengers director Joss Whedon, 'Thor' co-star Chris Hemsworth and 'Black Widow' actress Scarlett Johansson. With a special thanks to the ever-reliable RimBreaks for the heads up, read on below.

"The Avengers" writer-helmer Joss Whedon calls the
actor "electrifying, the most riveting guy on the screen. He takes such care not just with his character, but with everybody. By the time you put it all together, he's comfortable enough with the narrative that he can go in there and give you what you need. And then he can play with any variations you want to throw at him."

Whedon recalls one particular scene: "It was written very simply and Robert's like, 'Can we do more with this?' So while he was getting made up, I wrote 10 variations. He looked at them and said, 'Well, a little bit of this. A little bit of that.' After we shot it, he said, 'Are you sure you got enough? Because it wasn't cheap to fly me out here.'"

Downey co-"Avenger" Chris Hemsworth agrees. "Robert operates about 10 steps ahead of everyone else. The energy coming out of him when he's acting could power a small city, that being said, I've never felt more supported," says Hemsworth. "We finished shooting a scene together and I think he could see I was feeling uncertain about it, so he came up and said, 'Hey, I'm going to save you about 25 years of constipation and let you know that you've got it. You've ****ing got it. Now relax.' "

But for "Iron Man 2" Scarlett Johansson, it was all about that famous Downey unpredictability. "He possesses a quality that is both self-assured and off the cuff, something that is almost frighteningly exciting to work opposite," she says. "He's an enigma, a sort of verbal and emotional magician."

To check out Jon Favreau's thoughts on the actor, among others, head on over to Variety for the full must-read article!

Screw X-Lax! GET ME ONE OF HIM!!! LOL :P

This is an actor you can bank on. Give me ONE of his films that sucked. Just one. I guarantee you you'll have a hard time finding one and he'll never be the worst part of it, making the film at least worth watching once just for his performance. And if you say Ironman2 you need a slap. The worst of what Marvel puts out is still pretty decent, even good.

Just please, PLEASE, don't let all the other actors look sucky compared to him...PLEASE.

I guess I really shouldn't be worried. Hemsworth has played against Hopkins. Its Evan's I'm a little more worried about.

@Shaman
You had to ask, so I had to meet you with Richard III. The movie wasn't bad, but his role (very small too) was very unimpressive.

But I love Robert. I'd go gay for him. People say he gets too much attention, and they're probably right, but you've got to look at it from the standpoint of someone who basically won the lottery (offered the role of Tony Stark), gave it all away to charity (took the role), earned his millions afterwards (aced the role and all that has followed), and has not taken it for granted since. I would be proud and egotistical too.

I think its perfect that Chris said "Robert operates about 10 steps ahead of everyone else" about RDJ. That is exactly who Stark it, RDJ is probably the best casting choice Ever!!!!

Tainted87- LOL Yes well my comment was more directed towards the majority on here LOL Of course someone knows one or two of his worst performances because you simply don't get better without being worse first. And in his case, he wasn't born the actor he is today. So yeah, good show bud, but i'm certain most would have to look it up and even take the time to watch some of his most obscure roles to notice ;)

Robert Downey Jr. is the man, no doubt. Watched Chaplin again last week (like 3 times) as an adult and was just blown away.

This guy can literally do anything and get away with it (see Tropic Thunder).

Mass - I wouldn't worry about Evans, he's held his own against the likes of Tommy Lee Jones and Agent Smith himself, Hugo Weaving.
nuck82
nuck82 - 10/14/2011, 10:39 AM
and thats why the movie will go around him and iron man, because hes going to be the star of the movie, just like you can see by the trailer

Yeah, ScarJo will most likely be the POV character in the film. She'll be the River Tam of the Avengers.

Thanks to him, comic Tony Stark works better now.

It used to be Marvel didn't get formula right with boring business man Tony Stark without the motor mouth, smart ass patented RDJ style. In the past, what's the difference between boring Reed Richards (whose top dog brain makes him relevant) and boring Tony Stark (who is not as smart but equally boring)?

Now Marvel got two kind of genius, lab genius and worldly genius. A reserved genius and a showoff genius. RDJ is a showoff genius that creates wonder and credence to Tony Stark.

@imlinorama - when ScarJo said he was a "verbal and emotional magician" I thought that too. Sure he'd be awesome as Strange.
Shaman
Shaman - 10/14/2011, 11:04 AM
Scarjo'll be the Demi Moore of a Few Good Men. Any less than that and it simply wouldn't be a Whedon film.

@capcyclopsftw - I know, but playing Cap in a period piece against other 1940's type secondary characters and villains is different than playing against your modern hero costars. It is probably an over reaction on my part, though, due to the fact my concerns mostly arise from his one line in the trailer, which I didn't think was well delivered.

After watching that Robert Kirkman video yesterday, everytime I see RDJ's facial hair it makes me laugh.

Also, Mark Hamill for Doctor Strange. Or Guy Pierce.

I think I've heard Whedon himself say that Evans will be the focal point of The Avengers because of that whole man-out-of-time story, which I think is the way to go. The story should be seen through Rogers eyes' anyway, since the exploration of his new life has yet to be told. It'd be a much more interesting take than, oh I don't know, seeing Stark as the main character in yet another movie.

The only reason I think they made RDJ the centerpiece of the teaser was because he's Marvels most identifiable and most profitable character movie-goers have seen thus far.

So in short; boobs are great, chicks dig cool facial hair and Evans will deliver-- again.

:P

I can't think an actor better suited to delivering Whedon's style of dialogue. I hope this is the beginning of a fruitful collaboration. Joss fans know how much he likes to reuse the same stable of actors...

@Marvel72 - that's exactly what i'm thinking - Downey Jr will steal the [frick]ing show, and that's fine by me! He is a hell of an actor.
