2018's Superhero Movies Ranked From Least To Most Highly Anticipated

Following a massive 2017, 2018 looks set to be even bigger. While many of the CBM releases remain a mystery, we know enough about them to figure out which you should be most excited about.

Over the next few years, there are many Marvel and DC Comics adaptations to look forward to, but other than a handful of releases like Captain Marvel and Shazam, those from 2019 and beyond are either untitled or just rumoured. However, 2018 is already shaping up to be amazing year with nine movies on the way, six of which are confirmed, two are heavily rumoured, and one is a mystery.

We have sequels, reboots, and even debuts to look forward to, and while chances are that they won't all be good, 2018 most definitely has the potential to be one of the biggest years ever for the genre.

While we still know very little about each of these, enough has been revealed or rumoured to at least give us a vague idea of what to expect, and what you'll find here is a look at eight upcoming superhero movies ranked from least to most anticipated. With that comes a breakdown of what we know about them so far and why they're either worth getting excited over or simply not worth your time.

8. Spider-Man Animated Feature

If this movie was being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, I think I'd probably be 100x more excited, but first time director Bob Persichetti is at the helm instead. Yes, he has plenty of experience in the animated realm, but this spinoff already feels pretty unnecessary, so the lack of a top tier filmmaker hurts it in a big way. Little to nothing is known about it at this point, though rumours point to Miles Morales being the lead.

That's great and all, but why not introduce him in Spider-Man: Homecoming and give the character his own Marvel Cinematic Universe set spinoff a few years from now in live-action? That would be infinitely more satisfying than what feels like a consolation prize, and while this one could end up being something special, there just aren't enough reasons to be excited about it as of right now.

7. Deadpool 2

I liked Deadpool, but wasn't quite as taken with it as most seem to have been. That probably stems from not being a huge fan of the Merc with the Mouth outside of Joe Kelly's superb run some time ago, but there's no denying that the sequel has the potential to be amazing. After all, the origin story is out of the way now, Tim Miller is set to return to direct, and we're going to meet Cable (at last).

So, why doesn't the sequel - which hasn't been confirmed for release in 2018, but is almost certainly one of the two untitled Marvel movies has scheduled for that year - rank higher? Well, the competition is simply too stiff, and while I have no doubt that Deadpool 2 is going to end up being a highlight of 2018, there are much bigger movies on the way which currently give us a lot more reasons to be excited than this one does.

6. The Flash

Rick Famuyiwa being at the helm of The Flash instead of Seth Grahame-Smith is definitely an upgrade, especially as the latter has no experience in the director's chair. His screenplay is worryingly still being used, but if recent revelations about who was responsible for penning Wonder Woman are any indication, that may very well have already changed!

As much hate as Ezra Miller has received, the guy is a terrific actor (see: The Perks of Being a Wallflower, We Need To Talk About Kevin) and if reports from the set of Justice League are any indication, he's the perfect choice to bring Barry Allen to the big screen. However, while this movie will no doubt have a budget considerably higher than The CW TV series, I still find it hard to imagine that this will be able to top that, hence why I'm way more excited about season three than this!

5. Aquaman

Aquaman's appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was more than a little underwhelming, especially as you could quite clearly see that Jason Momoa was holding his breath underwater. Thankfully, it sounds like new technology is being used on the set of Justice League that will be carried over to the character's solo outing which has talented filmmaker James Wan at the helm.

He's done an incredible job with a massive blockbuster like Furious 7 and impressed on the opposite end of the scale with horror flicks like The Conjuring movies, so it's fair to say that Aquaman is in safe hands with him. Whether or not this character is capable of holding his own in a solo movie is something else, but providing it has a strong script and takes full advantage of that unique underwater setting, this has all the makings of a great movie.

4. Ant-Man and the Wasp

While there's no denying that Yellowjacket was another somewhat subpar villain from Marvel Studios, I still believe that Ant-Man was a highlight of Phase 2. Peyton Reed returning to direct the sequel is good news, while the fact that Scott Lang will be paired up with Hope Van Dyne's Wasp is obviously also very exciting.

Throw in rumours/theories that the story will revolve around the duo travelling into the Quantum Realm to rescue Janet (the original Wasp), and this once again has the potential to be a standout as the most quirky and unique release in Phase 3 outside of Doctor Strange. It's also going to be fun to see what's happening with Scott Lang after he was broken out of The Raft by Steve Rogers at the end of Captain America: Civil War, and as a result, there's a long list of reasons to care about this one.

3. Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1

So, yeah, you probably expected this to be at #1, right? While there's no denying that The Russo Brothers having their hands on The Avengers franchise after Captain America: Civil War is a thrilling prospect, there are a couple of other releases which narrowly beat this one, but I'll get to those soon enough. Infinity War will finally pit Earth's Mightiest Heroes against Thanos and looks set to include everyone from Captain Marvel to Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, so it being 2018's biggest movie is a guarantee.

Even with all those extra characters, following The Avengers and Age of Ultron will be no easy task for this filmmaking duo, and while the chances of this going wrong are somewhere between slim and none, it could still suffer from only being able to tell half a story before the sequel follows in 2019.

2. Black Panther

Arguably the best part of Captain America: Civil War, there are a long list of reasons to be excited for Black Panther, and it honestly has all the makings of being Marvel's best movie yet (a bold statement, but one which doesn't seem unrealistic). For starters, Creed helmer Ryan Coogler is directing, and that alone gives this one a serious advantage over every other superhero movie being released in 2018.

When you then take into account an incredible cast which already includes names like Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, and Michael B. Jordan, Black Panther is shaping up to have an even better ensemble than Infinity War, while Sebastian Stan possibly returning as The Winter Soldier here also helps give it an edge. Black Panther will take us deep into Wakanda, and if you're not excited about that, what's wrong with you?!

1. The Batman

This hasn't been confirmed (perhaps that will change at Comic-Con this weekend), but it's widely believed that Ben Affleck's The Batman will be released on October 5th, 2018. Assuming that is indeed the case, what else could take the #1 spot? Yes, we've seen the Dark Knight on the big screen before more than any other character listed here, but the prospect or Affleck starring in a movie written by him and Geoff Johns which he'll also direct is pretty mind-blowing.

We could very well be looking at a superhero movie which gets some serious awards season attention as a result, and with rumblings of an appearance from Jared Leto's Joker, cameos from several other villains, and possibly even an Arkham Asylum setting, you'd best believe that it's The Batman who looks set to dominate the genre two years from now.

Which of these movies are you guys most looking forward to? Do you agree with this ranking or would you place another 2018 release at #1? Let us know your thoughts below.
