Lanterns Releases New Footage From The Weeks Ahead; The Creative Team Talks Episode 1 Spoilers

Did HBO Max's Lanterns really just do that in episode 1? The show's creators address that shocking premiere twist while a new promo showcases what's coming in subsequent weeks.

One episode down, it's safe to say that HBO Max's Lanterns is pulling out all of the stops to craft a gargantuan mystery that could have far-reaching repercussions across the DCU.

Is the show really heading in this 'direction' with Hal Jordan, or is this a monumental fake-out?

There are 7 more episodes left to unravel the mystery and find out if Jordan is truly gone or if he's simply dropping off the radar to find out what's really going on.

Speaking to Discussing Film, the Lanterns creative team knew they were going to run afoul of comic book fans with how the first episode played out.

The site spoke to Damon Lindelof and Tom King, who admitted, "We want audiences to feel sad, and we want them to feel mad, and we want them to feel confused. Because those are the feelings that people have when someone they care about dies."

Lindelof went on to say, "The fans are going to hate us. There were all these reasons not to do it, but the story kept pushing us to do it anyway, especially since we really wanted to serve the emotional stakes of their relationship."

However, he went on to explain, "There’s going to be some short-term anger and dissatisfaction, understandably. People have waited over a decade for Hal Jordan to return to their screens, and then, suddenly, he’s a frozen corpse. But what matters most is where they’re sitting at the end of the eighth episode and whether they felt it was a necessary turn for the story to move forward."

Following the conclusion of episode 1, HBO Max has also released a "weeks ahead" promo, which shows that with the show taking place across different time periods, Hal will still have a big presence in the show.  However, the footage also reveals that John Stewart is definitely the focal point.

Lanterns stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart.  Fans will also see Nathan Fillion reprise his role as the abrasive Guy Gardner, connecting Lanterns to his appearance in Superman.

The stellar cast also includes Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, a pivotal character in the local mystery, while Ulrich Thomsen will portray the iconic rogue Sinestro, Hal Jordan's former mentor.

Other key cast members include Garret Dillahunt as the conspiracy-minded William Macon, Jason Ritter as his charming son Billy, and Nicole Ari Parker as John Stewart's mother, Bernadette.

The official synopsis for the series states that the plot centers on a seemingly isolated murder in the American heartland, specifically in Rushville, Nebraska. This local crime will draw the veteran Green Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his new recruit, John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), into deeper, more sinister revelations.

Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen) is on board as a co-creator of the HBO drama, putting him right at the center of the show’s creative direction. He’s joined by Chris Mundy (Hell on Wheels, Low Winter Sun) and Tom King.

Mundy serves as the showrunner for the production while King supplied the initial pitch. Lindelof wrote the pilot and is in charge of overall story development.

The show delivers exactly what was promised. It’s perhaps too good for the DCU.

100% agree, a mean-spirited character assassination of Hal.

Why would I feel sad? I have no reason to like this version of the character. He was insufferable.

@SeeYouIn2036 - this is episode one of 8. And most people really enjoyed the episode. I did too. And I have read the comics since I was ten years old. Kyle was my GL and so was John. Hal didn’t come back into the scene until my late teens.

That said, Chandler did a great job and I have a feeling that he might be dead. Either it wasn’t Hal or we will get a parallax/Spectre thing.

@Mrnorth1921 - Hal is gone. So is my interest. Maybe they’ll do a more comic book accurate version in the reboot.

@SeeYouIn2036 - I don’t think he’s dead. And it’s heavily implied that that John was meant to be the DCU GL. Many elements are based JLU animated series.

Most people on this site didn't enjoy the show judging from the comments here.
Fine if you liked it though.

It was a good start and interesting.

@Mrnorth1921 - Just things that are bad. The new season of My Adventures with Superman has been very enjoyable. I need to keep watching Caped Crusader, but the first two episodes were definitely a step up from season one. Knightfall looks great. There are a ton of great comics going right now: the Absolute line is solid, Supergirl Survive is very interesting, the second Batman & Robin miniseries from Mark Waid just started and it's great, Emperor Aquaman continues to impress.

There's plenty of quality DC content being released right now. A lot of fans just don't like the Tom King Cinematic Universe.

Can we talk about how unfathomably boring that was? My wife fell asleep and I had to get up and do the dishes while we were watching I was so bored.

Even if I had never heard of the Green Lantern, that was just awful. My first time cancelling a subscription over something being so bad.

@InfinitePunches - lol

Then why did you watch it? Go do something more productive with your life than watching something you don’t like and then bitching about it on the internet.

@thedrudo - I did. I just said I did the dishes. It turned out to be a very productive evening in the end. It was taco bowl night.

But yeah, I officially cancelled HBO Max as soon as the episode ended. Looking forward to finishing Emerald Dawn II tomorrow.

Chandler is so good in this role that if Hal really is dead, I might actually start taking the reboot-the-DCU guy seriously. He's been warning us this whole time, and we didn't listen.

@maxx - Hal's died before and come back. Plus, given Gunn's prior citing of the Bruce Timm era animated universe, it was kind of inevitable that this show would do some form of torch-passing between Hal and John.

@ObserverIO - You think so? The way the scene played out made me feel like Hal kept his ring. On top of that, its pretty much confirmed that Hal's ring and Guy's ring are not the same look-wise.
