Baddies That Need Movie Love: Harley Quinn

Baddies That Need Movie Love: Harley Quinn

In Part 4 of my ongoing series of Baddies That Need Movie Love, I take a look at one of the baddest beotches in the DC Comics world. Even though she was the result of the animated series, Harley Quinn has cemented her place amongst the baddest of the bad!

It's time once again to delve into the world of Baddies That Need Movie Love and this go round, I introduce the first female baddy of the bunch. Harley Quinn, in her short history in the Batman stories, has quickly moved to the top of many lists as a crazy, yet vicious foe to the Dark Knight.

Now, we know that Christopher Nolan won't be bringing the Joker back to the big screen and he has been quite vocal about that, so the chances of Harley gracing the screen are pretty much nil. Not to mention, The Dark Knight Rises will be Nolan's last venture in the franchise. So it seems likely that the only way Harley will hit the screen is if the Batman franchise gets a reboot...again- which may or may not happen.

Harley Quinn, also known as Dr. Harlene Quinzel, first made her appearance in 1992, in the Batman: The Animated Series and eventually made her way into the Batman comic publications. She can most often be seen along side The Joker, as his accomplice and girlfriend. Here's a bit of history on how Paul Dini came up with the idea for the character:

Arleen Sorkin, a former star of the soap opera Days of our Lives, appeared in a dream sequence on that series in which she wore a jester costume; Dini used this scene as an inspiration for Quinn.[3] Having been friends with Sorkin since college, he incorporated aspects of her personality into the character.

In 1994, in the graphic novel "Mad Love," Quinn's origins were played out. Having started out as a psychologist at Arkham Asylum, she eventually fell for the Clown Prince, becoming his accomplice and lover. The story was highly praised and won several awards. Quinn has formed alliances with many different characters including Catwoman and Poison Ivy, but her one true love will always be Joker.

I think that most of us would agree that the late (and great) Brittany Murphy was born to play the role of Harley Quinn and would have owned the role like no other. But since she has passed on, we have all been throwing names out there and I'm doing the same. We have seen names like Zooey Deschanel Kristin Bell Fairuza Balk and Christina Ricci among others. My choice has already starred in two comic book movies and was the show stealer in both of them. In Blade: Trinity she played Danica Talos, the vampire who was responsible for bringing Dracula into modern times. In Superman Returns she took on the role of Kitty Kowalski, the faithful, yet compassionate partner to Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor.

Parker Posey has been acting for nearly 20 years now and has proven herself to be very capable of handling different types of roles. Take for instance her part in Christopher Guest's Best in Show and then moving on to films like Blade: Trinity. She can delve into the world of crazy and psychotic without a problem and despite her now being in her 40's, she looks much younger than that.

Having said all that, I'd be quite surprised to see this character show up in a film, but there is no denying that seeing the Joker and Harley on screen together would be a sight to behold. So here's to hoping that someday, we'll get to see this bad-ass beotch on the big screen!

I think Parker Posey might be a little too old to play the role. My personal favorite for the role would be Isla Fisher.

You may know her best as Vince Vaughan`s crazy love interest in The Wedding Crashers.

r1g0r,

I love Summer Glau, but if she was involved in a Batman movie playing Harley Quinn or Catwoman it would probably turn out being a failure and make no money.

Poor girl, she`s talented, but she can`t seem to make a big hit.

Parker Posey does NOT still look young enough for the role of Harley Quinn. Quit drinking the bong water, dude. No amount of make up can rectify that. I would love to see a live action version of Harley but I doubt that it will be anytime soon (Mia Sarah's abysmal rendition notwithstanding).

Quinn could work but when she does make it in a Batman film and is a major player in it, I still say it is best that The Joker is in it as well. It hard for me to see anyone playing The Joker after Heath's passing that is why I respect Nolan's decision about not bringing the Joker back because sumtimes one of the problems in movies is to much recasting at times "sometimes not all the time" but when that day comes when a new actor is The Joker I will be happy about that & willing to see how that new actor will portray as Harley says "Mr. J!"

But like I said Harley could possibly hold her own in a Batman film but I still want to see her in it with The Joker "now let's put a :-) on that face!"

The hot new post in "What's New", fan dream casting. Nothing more, nothing less.

CBM should just stick to CBM news.

Very nice ecks, I could really see Harle Quinn in a Batman movie. Just not Nolan.

If Arkham features in TDKR you could just have a quick shot of a blonde cutie in a doctors coat with a clipboard walking down the hall, maybe humming a little tune in that squeaky accent. Then if rabid fans pause n' zoom they'll see her name tag says Quinzel.

That's be enough for me until such time as another director comes along.

Jennifer McCarthy would have been great for the role at one time.

ECKS @ Part Four???

I never saw Parts 1 to 3???

Nice but I'm going with ZOOEY DESCHANEL:

An ARKHAM ASYLUM movie needs to be made once Nolan's gone, maybe not BATS 4 but one should be done, it would be beyond fantastic!

Anyone remember Clare Kramer as Glory from Buffy the Vampire Slayer? She had the right amount of crazy, loopy, sexiness for the role.

She's a goon.A hanger on.Without the Joker involved she's pointless. And even then I've never felt comfortable with him having a sidekick. She's not a bad character, and she can be fun,but in the larger scheme of things she's a waste of space in a story.

LOVE HARLEY. They could bring Harley in with out Mr Jay. Harley is a villain on her own. (See the Harley Quinn comics.) Along with that she has worked with Ivy, Cat women, Two face and Riddler. As much as I'd love to see Harley on the big screen, IDK if I want Nolan to get her there. He took all the funny out of the Joker. I feel like the joker could be anyone in Nolan's world.
