BATMAN Legends Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo Discuss Ending Their Epic 51 Issue Run

After 5 years on the job, the creative team behind the current BATMAN comic will be handing the reigns. Find out their thoughts on moving on from the caped crusader, and what they’ll be up to next after the jump!

Whilst Zack Snyder’s on screen take on Batman has been divisive to say the least, there’s another Snyder out there who has been receiving near universal praise for his five year run as writer on DC Comics’ flagship Batman title. The all-star team up of Greg Capullo and Scott Snyder will sadly be ending their much lauded “Batman” run with issue #51 coming out this week.

The duo talked to Newsarama this week about their epic run and the end of an era. On what to expect from the pairs final issue, Snyder was fairly tight lipped but had this to say:

I don't want to give too much away. But I think this issue shows how Batman is a symbol of bravery and inspiration. Sometimes he gets portrayed very darkly — and I love those versions of him — but he's also a figure of inspiration. And this issue is sort of our way of showing that theme of our Batman.

When asked about the emotional toll of putting Batman behind him, Capullo weighed in with some great insights into the pressure of working on such a big title:

Back when I was just going to start the last issue, my wife Jane said, "You're probably going to be really sad, right?" And I'm like, "No! What are you talking about? I'm a man!" [Laughs.] You know?

I never anticipated that I would have any kind of a melancholy feeling, but it started to set in every once in a while. I'd be drawing the pages and it would get in me a little bit, and I'd have to brush it off and just do my job.

Immediately after I got done, I felt a sigh of relief, because I'd been under such deadline pressure, and a standard that I had to hold up and maintain for five years. And it was like, "Aaaaaaah." So I was actually relieved for a bit.

And Jane would also go, "Oh, and you're going to be missing Scott!" And I was like, "Nah, I'm cool. I'm a man!" But then I'm like sending him virtual hugs via text, which is really, kinda not manly… but it's a man hug. It's a bear hug. I'm crushing the life out of him when I'm doing so!

Whilst he’ll be moving on from the regular Batman books, Snyder apparently still has a few tales to tell about the Dark Knight, as he’ll be moving on to “All Star Batman” as part of the Rebirth shakeup. All Star will see him teaming up with different artists each issue, so there’s every chance we might yet get to see a Capullo / Snyder Batman reunion.

Capullo on the other hand will be teaming up with Mark Millar on an as yet untitled independent project, with more information set to come in May.

“Batman” will be taken over by writer Tom King (Grayson, The Omega Men) and art from David Finch (Batman: The Dark Knight) and Mikel Janin (Grayson, Justice League Dark).

This should please some fanboys. All I hear from them is how they want Snyder off DC.

I really don't know if this book will ever do better than these two. What a magnificent run.

@MattBellissimo -

Oh shut up. Don't pretend that you were a fan all along. All I ever heard from you was how "Snyder is a hack." "I hate Snyder with all my heart." "He's ruining DC." "Nate, McGee won't stop sending me dick pics."
