Clayface Spoiler Discussion & Poll — How Would You Rate The R-Rated DCU Movie?

Clayface has arrived in theaters, but what did you think of DC Studios' latest movie? Share your thoughts on the biggest moments, leave a star rating, and let us know whether it delivers for the DCU!

Clayface has opened in theaters, and with 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has earned the approval of most critics. While DC Studios' R-rated horror movie isn't necessarily a critical darling, this response is a big win after June's Supergirl crashed and burned.

Whether it can make the necessary impact at the box office will be determined in the coming weeks. Clayface was never going to do Superman-level numbers, but James Gunn and Peter Safran will want to impress their new boss, David Ellison, with a strong performance.

That's down to them. Today, we're far more interested in hearing what you think. Whether you want to head to the comments section below to share your thoughts on all the biggest moments or simply wish to share your star rating, this is your chance to weigh in.

As a reminder, we concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

That was our take, but again, what did you think? Clayface boasts an undeniably impressive "Popcornmeter" score of 94%, suggesting it's struck a chord with fans, and that too is a big win for DC Studios after Lanterns' portrayal of Hal Jordan split opinions.

Next up for the DCU is Man of Tomorrow, another chapter in the "Superman Saga." Clayface being sandwiched between Supergirl and that may be the palate cleanser many fans needed. Or not. Let us know your thoughts below.

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit.

Clayface is now playing in theaters.

I saw this today. After reading Josh’s review my expectations were admittedly low. After seeing it I am convinced that Josh has an anti DC agenda. It was nothing like any of the Sony villain films. It was a very good psychological horror/thriller with plenty of surprises. The acting was great, the story was similar to other body horror films but original enough to be its own thing. Probably one of DCs best installments from both generations of DC movies. Great job! Hope it has legs. Cult classic status in its future.

@Baf - I felt the same. Need to do better in not letting the negativity sway my decision making. I usually don't let it influence me but this site unfortunately can be very vitriolic, from the comments and sadly, a contributor. I may see it again next week. And for the record, I'm a die hard Marvel fan. Wanted to see something different and was not disappointed in the least bit.

@Baf - It's possible to have a different opinion without it being an agenda. However, after reading your mini-review, I am now convinced you have a pro-DC agenda. 🙃

@JoshWilding - Touché! Honestly, you do get under my skin, but I sincerely appreciate it. I also applaud you for standing up for what’s right.
I do skew DC but my resentment is born mostly of jealousy. Kind of like when you think Vegas is controlling the refs who in turn controll the game.

@Baf - Well said yes I'm happy people are loving it as much as I did! I would even call it more of a revenge pulp action thriller more than horror. Extremely satisfying movie imo!!

It's the best DCU project which is like being the tallest midget.

The film has the ghost of potential about it but it's too underbaked. The effects let it down. The script is dreadful. I like the tone. You can enjoy it for what it is, but there's no character arcs or really even a story arc. The dialogue is cringe, the best moments are when it's homaging way better movies.

But I mean look, even if I were to fawn over it, it would still only be the third best movie this weekend. But that's also not saying anything as here are two legitimate Best Picture contenders out this weekend with You Can See Everything and Wildwood.

Wildwood is seriously amazing, you are all sleepin on it. It's also kinda a Batman villain origin movie it's darker than Clayface, it's more violent than Clayface, it's got all the story and character that Clayface lacks. It's fr the best animated anything you'll ever see. Still got 100% on RT. One of the best movies you'll ever see.
I haven't seen You Can See Everything but the way people talk about that movie, it sounds almost as good as Wildwood.

Clayface is ultimately a disposable, cheap, empty soulless film that just happens to be leagues ahead of anything the DCU has done so far.

Naomi Ackie is very good though. Wouldn't mind seeing her character turn up in The Batman part II.

bobevanz - 10/24/2026, 1:37 PM
@UltronIO - nobody is saying Wildwood is bad. Also very few people are saying Clayface is bad. Laika has has one profitable movie (Coraline). They don't make movies for money, they do it for the art. Clayface needs to break even or else clowns like Josh will say tOlD yOu So because they have nothing better to do

@bobevanz - Not so much an alt account as I've let Ultron take the wheel for now. The 'IO' at the end should be a clue to who I was.

@UltronIO - She was fantastic too, I really felt like she had a genuine care for Matt's well being and was so torn with what he turns into. I like it better than the fly because imo at least the ending of Clayface shows he's fully formed and ready for movie number 2 🤞 I hope!!!

"Haven't seen it" being lumped in with "don't plan on seeing it" would be putting your finger on the scale. Why not make it separate choices hmm?

It's reminiscent of classic Universal horror monsters (sympathetic lead, plagued by his curse, spirals into madness and becomes frightening homicidal monster). I agree with comparisons to The Fly (mad science mishandled leads to the unknown, doomed lovers damned by their own fates, grotesque body horror transformations), but it also borrows elements from Darkman. This is a tale of bloody (and justified) revenge.

Tom Rhys Harries draws you in to his tragic plight with his performance, and (much like The Penguin), they don't shy away from the fact this is a VILLAIN, not some misunderstood anti-hero. You're rooting for him until he goes too far, snaps and breaks bad. Then you're reminded he's also a very dangerous, very powerful, very unstable and unhinged creature.

The supporting cast was great, especially Naomi Ackie as the mad scientist (she's not mad, but her science certainly is). It was fun watching the other actors each play the villain (albeit briefly) as well. The smoky, wet, neon-drenched, graffiti-splattered Gotham was a perfect backdrop. Her flare stacks and el-trains perfectly counter-balance the palm trees and clear skies of a sunkissed Coast City.

The creative usage of Hagen's new abilities led to some really inventive kills (this goes way beyond the typical smash-with-a-clay-mace-murders). That final kill was both poetic and insane. The ending also invokes heavy BTAS vibes, for those fans of the cartoon, of which I am.

Clayface is an undisputed win for the DCU. Anyone can walk into this blind and enjoy the film for what it sets out to be. The detractors could not be more wrong. We were beyond impressed, and will be seeing this one in theaters again. We had fun. Totally worth our time.

@asavagevandal - Hey beautifully written! Couldn't have said it better myself I really feel like this was a Masterpiece and it made me think of a more obscure film with some elements, Nosferatu (Klaus Kinski version).

Thought it was good but not great. Back half was pretty strong and I liked the ending a lot n
