JOKER Director Todd Phillips Responds To Golden Globes Nomination And Offers A Possible Sequel Update

Joker picked up a lot of nominations at the Golden Globes, and as well as reacting to the news, director Todd Phillips reveals whether he's discussed a sequel with star Joaquin Phoenix yet. Check it out!

Joker grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and received widespread critical acclaim, so it's really no great surprise that it dominated the Golden Globes nominations yesterday.

The R-Rated DC Comics adaptation picked up "Best Drama," "Best Actor", and "Best Director" nods among others, and when Variety caught up with filmmaker Todd Phillips, they asked for his thoughts on the awards attention the movie has recieved. "When I first pitched this movie to Warner Bros., I never thought about nominations or grosses," he admitted.

"I was just thinking how we would push this through to achieve a finished product. As for why audiences were drawn to the film, it was a combination of things: obviously Joaquin and his performance, it was so immersive and he really dove into what he was doing. I used to joke with the DP during the shoot that rather than massive visual effects, Joaquin was that special effect for us."

"Before we started shooting, I really knew how invested he was in this role and knew we possibly had something very special ahead of us."
That seems like an accurate assesment, but what about the rumoured follow-up? "As for a sequel," Phillips notes, "it’s way too early [to tell]. I swear I haven’t even talked to Joaquin about that yet or what that would even be."

So, it sounds like it's still early days for another Joker movie, and there's no guarantee it will even happen despite how successful the first instalment was. It's also hard to imagine what direction it could take, but Arthur Fleck's continuing descent into madness and full transformation into the Clown Prince of Crime would seem like the most obvious route.

What do you guys think?

Didn't expect him to get a director nomination, and I'm not entirely sure I wanted him too. The film is pretty well directed but there are only a few times it feels like it's Phillips actually directing the film. Other times it feels like a film student that's studied Scorsese for years without his own unique vision. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't feel all that original or unpredictable.

I'm glad for him though, and I like that at least he has been a better sport about it than James Mangold.

Release the Snyder- AHAHAHHAHHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHa!!!! Well done Phoenix. Make the sequel. Give it the Azzarello vibe from Joker. My two cents...

If and I do mean if there is a sequel, I'd like to see the dynamic between Joker and Harley Quinn.

Their relationship is very messed up and we all known WB won't ever show that side of it for Margot's version.

It would even be a way to show how sick wife beaters are, why when people see abuse like that in the real world, they'll call it out and help the victims, who are too afraid to leave the monster.

Todd Phillips getting a nomination over Noah Baumbach was pretty weird. Wonder who wins this though. Could see Bong, Scorsese or Tarantino all taking it.

Bong, The Safdie Bros and Alma Har'el all deserved the best director nom over him, no offense.

Good for him, but I'll make this simple because people are asshurt about his nomination.

The golden globes don't mean shit.

Most of the time their nominating body doesn't watch the movie, they either nominate what has a lot of oscar clout or what is most popular at the time.

That is why Phillip's was nominated over all those other directors. Because joker made money and people -say- it's in the oscar conversation. And that's coming from someone who has joker in his top 5 of the year.

IF they do a sequel. The teaser should be nothing but his laugh in the background set over Gotham. Quick. 30 seconds. Subtle nods to the plot. And thats it.

They deserve the nominations. The film was spectacular and it killed to become the highest grossing R-Rated movie. Ever. I don't understand, why should the director not get a nomination lol? He directed it. I swear if it weren't for Scorcese, Philips would be the most hated person on this site. So much salt and the movies about to come out on blu-ray. That's some dedication to being butthurt over a movie.

Cinematography, the score & Phoenix all deserve a nom, but I don't think it was that well directed for Phillips to get one, not above other great directors. All 3 of the above mentioned carried that film & made it what it is.

This was Joker in name only. No Jack Napier no red hood gang no Batman. This was made by Hollywood douchebaggery elitist Scorsese type people who think comic book movies aren’t cinema. I like Scorsese movies don’t get me wrong but Joker was a total miss and flop for me. If it didn’t have Phoenix, this movie would have been reviled. Might have hated this more than any movie I’ve seen in the last 5 years.

In sorry, I found it so boring. But good for D.C. Comics and just comics in general.
