Meet Arthur: the man who will eventually become Batman's greatest nemesis, The Joker.

Director Todd Philips has taken to Instagram to share our first look at Joaquin Phoenix as "Arthur Fleck," and while this fellow clearly doesn't have any of The Joker's trademark characteristics, he will eventually don the white skin, green hair and ruby lips that have become so closely associated with the iconic Batman baddie.

At least, we hope so?

It seems Phillips posted this pic to get the jump on some set images that found their way online today (more on those later).

There's speculation that Phoenix's character will undergo his transformation into the Clown Prince of Crime after suffering a similar tragedy to the one that befalls Joker in Alan Moore's The Killing Joke, but that obviously remains to be seen.

At any rate, let us know what you think of this first look at the man who will become The Joker in the comments down below.

@BlackBeltJones - don’t throw Ron Howard’s bro under the ice cream truck like that!

I don’t understand this at all. I see absolutely no appeal to having a joker origins film. If it’s just a great script about a mans decline into madness just let it be it’s own thing.

This might be the most bland piece of pre-promotion for a CBM ever. It's literally an expressionless man wearing a brown coat.

Yeah I'm just not a big fan of giving the joker a concrete backstory. The appeal of the character to me is that anybody could be the joker, we are all one the edge of sanity and insanity all it takes is "One bad day". Some character's lose what makes them special when you try to explain why they did what they do (Bobba Fet). Fear comes from not understanding something and that is why joker is so scary because he is hard to understand.

@CurlyBill - You acting like its some official canon origin story......its an elseworld story,and we saw joker origin in 89 movie,or even in comics.....

@Omega - No I'm acting like it's pointless...which it is.
