Deadline reports that Brendan Gleeson is the latest addition to Todd Phillips' Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. There's no word on who the Irish actor is playing, and we're sure many of you will recognise him from his time in the Harry Potter franchise as Mad-Eye Moody.
However, he has a long list of impressive credits to his name, including In Bruges, Calvary, and The Guard. He'll next be seen in The Banshees of Inisherin alongside Colin Farrell and Martin McDonagh.
Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime in the sequel, with Lady Gaga joining him as a character many believe is a new take on Harley Quinn. It was also recently confirmed that Zazie Beetz will reprise her role from the first movie.
The trade notes that cameras are set to begin rolling this December, with Phillips directing from a script he penned with Scott Silver. Few plot details have been shared, though insiders believe that the action will be set primarily within Arkham Asylum and feature musical elements. That's a unique approach and one that could be amazing or a complete and utter disaster.
Joker: Folie à Deux is the only DC Comics movie to have received the green light in the Warner Bros. Discovery era, and it's clear this is a franchise the studio has a lot of faith in.
Back in 2019, Joker became the first R-Rated movie to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office. It also earned 12 Oscar nominations, so don't bank on Phillips suddenly changing tact and embracing the comics here. That's not a bad thing, of course, as the first chapter was a great movie that delivered a refreshing take on the Clown Prince of Crime.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to be released in theaters on October 4, 2024, exactly five years after Joker debuted.
