JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX Soundtrack Said To Be Heavily Inspired By Liza Minelli Musicals

It's probably fair to say that there was a mixed response to the news that Todd Phillips' Joker sequel, Folie à Deux, was going to contain musical elements, but a lot of fans seem to have come around to the idea - especially after learning that Lady Gaga will likely be belting out a few of the tunes.

We're still not sure exactly how these songs will be implemented into the story, but rumor has it that the narrative will be split between Harley Quinn (Gaga) and Arthur Fleck's (Joaquin Phoenix) skewed perspectives, so there's a chance the musical numbers will simply be part of the characters' delusions (Fleck imagined his entire relationship with Sofie Dummond in the first film, after all).

Whatever form the songs take, we're now hearing that the soundtrack will be "heavily inspired" by classic Liza Minelli musicals such as Cabaret, New York, New York, and That's Entertainment.

This isn't really too surprising, since Lady Gaga is a big Minelli fan. We still don't know if the pop megastar is actually writing the soundtrack, but we'd say there's a decent chance she'll pen at least one song for the movie.

Phillips recently shared a first look at Gaga as Harls, which you can check out below.

Filming is currently underway in New York, but the production is expected to move to Los Angeles soon.

The Joker sequel won't take place in the same world as the main DCU, and will be known as an "Elseworlds" project, along with Matt Reeves' The Batman movies, J.J. Abrams' Black Superman film, and (most likely) Constantine 2.

Plot details are still mostly under wraps, but we do know that the majority of the film will take place in Arkham Asylum.

Joker: Folie à deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.

I think this is a beautiful way to pay tribute

Some of us look to performing arts as a ways to express or find insight

We look to art for inspiration and discovery

That means giving artists space to go into challenging and uncomfortable places

Narrow-mindedness sabotages exploration

Hatred is not a friend to artistry

Silence, tolerance, curiosity, meditation, self-wareness, love are

Back in the day, 'Cabaret' was razor-sharp because it played against obvious type. Many of the characters are so engrossed in their 'showbiz' decadent lifestyles that they don't notice that their hometown: Berlin/Weimar Germany is becoming overtaken by the Nazi Party. I wonder if they'll emulate those political extremes as sane people vs insane people?

@BillyBatson1000 - I saw the first movie. They're not that smart. Good idea though.

By "Inspired by Liza Minelli musicals" I hope they mean 20s ~ 50s jazz and not so much the stories themselves.

On paper, this movie doesn’t sound like it would appeal to me at all. But the first was great and I don’t expect the sequel to be a stinker.

My wife has helped me to appreciate musicals more than I used to, so if the execution is done well, this could really be a unique and special CBM.

This will be to Cabaret and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest what the first movie was to Taxi Driver and King of Comedy.

Everyone I mention this film too are excited at first and then lose all interest when I tell them it’s a musical. I’m keeping my mind open personally, but this is a pretty big risk.

Making this a musical is going to turn out to be a massive mistake. It will be the last "Joaquin Phoenix" Joker film.

@Forthas - I don't get the musical angle either. I hate musicals, they're ruining a good thing.

I enjoyed the first movie. Don't care for musicals and I don't care for Gaga's music.

Maybe, just maybe, I'll watch this.
