JOKER: Here's A Detailed Breakdown Of Everything That Happens In The First Teaser Trailer

The first Joker teaser trailer will be with us later today, but following its premiere at CinemaCon last night, we now have a detailed description of what exactly we should expect from this sneak peek...

Later today, Warner Bros. will release the first trailer for Joker. Directed by Todd Phillips, it stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime and promises to tell a very different origin story for Batman's greatest villain. While it's too soon to say how many comic book fans will react to that, a description of that footage has been revealed and, well, it sounds pretty awesome.

Phillips was on hand to describe the movie as a "tragedy," and it was confirmed that Joker is going to take place from Arthur Fleck's point of view. The filmmaker also pointed out that there's a lot of false information doing the rounds online about what the film actually is.

While this may not be the movie many fans wanted featuring the iconic bad guy, it sounds like a lot of interesting ideas are being brought to the table, and the trailer also includes first looks at Thomas and Bruce Wayne along with Fleck getting into full Joker mode.

So, to check out the breakdown of this trailer before it's released later, hit the "View List" button.

Arthur's Unhealthy Relationship With His Mom

The trailer kicks off with a shot of Gotham City (Manhattan doubles for that iconic location here rather than Chicago or Detroit) before showing Arthur talking to his therapist. A series of creepy smiles follow before he arrives home...and bathes his mother. Weird, right?

It's then that he says his mother tells him to put on a "happy face," and it seems like his relationship with her will be a catalyst for his eventual descent into madness.

Things Get Worse For Arthur

As we've seen in set photos, Arthur's job is to dress as a clown and spin a sign on a street corner. His luck keeps getting worse, though, as he's attacked by a group of thugs who rob and beat him. It seems like Gotham City is getting worse as he asks, "Is it me or are things getting crazier out there?"

There are also some shots of Arthur on a date with Sophie, another possible tragedy in the making.

Arkham Hospital

It seems as if Arkham Asylum was once known as Arkham Hospital, because Arthur is shown heading there (presumably to meet with his therapist) and we see an orderly played by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's Brian Tyree Henry.

As Arthur stands in an elevator, he looks extremely unnerved by a patient thrashing in a stretcher and it's then that he finally dons the clown makeup we've seen in set photos - his transformation into The Joker has seemingly begun.

The Wayne Family

The trailer then shows Thomas Wayne giving a speech about how Gotham City has lost its way, and he talks about how it's wrong for people to hide behind masks. There are a lot of angry onlookers, though, and they clash with the police.

Interestingly, it seems as if Arthur ends up meeting a young Bruce Wayne as we see The Joker reach through the gates of somewhere that could be Wayne Manor and pull on his lips in order to make the younger Bruce pull a smiley face. The prevailing theory is that these two may end up being half-brothers.

Meet The Joker

From there, we get to see Robert De Niro's talk show host as Arthur narrates the scene with, "I used to think my life was a tragedy. But now I believe it’s a comedy." We then see the Clown Prince of Crime dancing down a long set of stairs and the creepy final shot shows him in full makeup - but most definitely not smiling - as he steps into an elevator.

So, while this definitely sounds different, it has some potential, right? We'll get to watch this trailer later today but let us know your thoughts on this trailer breakdown in the comments section!

I didn't see it mentioned ..

But the song the trailer is set to is "Smile" by Jimmy Durante

Everything about this screams 'Taxi Driver' .. which is a pretty fantastic comparison if true.

People need to relax a little and remember this is essentially an "elseworlds" type of non-cannon .. from The Jokers viewpoint movie. It's a character study and has major potential

I can see this being a major awards contender to be honest

So far NOT looking forward to it, I don't like any part I've seen so far BUT I'll watch the trailer and reevaluate from there, nothing to do with it being DC before any one jumps on that bandwagon, its purely based on what has been released about it and the photo's which for me gives a weird vibe SO FAR, hopefully I'll love the trailer and things will be put in to context. And yes, people are entitled to not look forward to a film based on so little stuff, I'm not hating on it, just need to see more and proper stuff.

@Mclane - I think its good that it looks weird and creepy. But pribably sunday movie goers and typical comic book audience will not like this kind of a comic book movie,it will be more like Taxi Driver, not something spectacular like Avengers Endgame.

I really hope the last scene in the movie is Joker in custody (or in Arkham Asylum) talking to a therapist who says she doesn’t believe anything he just said and that his response is “Well thats just one version of how I got here”. I really just wish it stays a bit vague and all

It sounds sort of cliche. It could be really good but the crappy mom, a therapist, and a society that doesn't understand sounds very trite when read on paper.

Still intrigued though.

@BlackBeltJones - I think its gonna be something like Taxi Driver.

@Omega - I agree as well and I like that movie a lot. But I find the mommy issues stuff to be a little eh. I sort of expected something else I guess.

Taxi Driver was very topical for its time. Bickle was a disturbed vet who was really affected by the war and what he saw. It made him eventually explode as he attempted to reintegrate into society.

This is truly surreal, a Joker Origin Story that seemingly shouldn’t be, but is. As long as the writing is good AND there is at least a nod to BATMAN, this might be a gem of a movie. I hope we all put on a happy face when this comes out. hehehehe...

Its gonna be interesting to see how the normal audience will react to this kind of a movie with comic book character, this days we expect fun and spectacular scenes from comic book movies and Avengers Endgame will delivere this on big scale. So im really interested to see how people will react to opposite to that. But i have bad feelings about it.

@Omega - For me,i want more this kind of the movies, stand alone stories telling and showing something different from characters we know. Not everything should be build into connected shared universe like Marvel movies.
IronGenesis

@Omega - whoever greenlit this project at a budget of a measly $55 Million is a genius.

The “normal” CBM audience might as look like a deer starring down a 18 wheeler when this movie comes out.

But at $55 Million...it’s almost BOMB Proof.

Unless the footage LOOKS really good, I have to say this doesn't SOUND very interesting. But maybe it was shit footage altogether, and there is a good movie somewhere.

I'm still looking forward to it weirdly, but I really want to see some stuff.
