As October 4th inches closer and closer, Warner Bros. is really starting to pick up the marketing campaign for Todd Phillips' highly-anticipated Joker, which has been garnering widespread critical acclaim and serious Oscar buzz for its 3x Academy Award-nominated leading man Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers).

While plot details have mostly been kept under wraps, the film is expected to tell the twisted and undeniably disturbing origin story of the Dark Knight's most notorious villian.

In addition to Phoenix, the film also stars Robert De Niro (The Irishman), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (The Dark Knight Rises), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Marc Maron (GLOW).

The latest promo banner for the film features Phoenix's Arthur Fleck in full Joker-mode.

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Director: Todd Phillips
Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker
Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin
Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond
Frances Conroy as Penny Fleck
Brett Cullen as Thomas Wayne

"While plot details have mostly been kept under wraps"
I mean, Josh Wilding adds a list containing every spoiler from the film to every Joker article he writes, so it can't be that under wraps

I hope this film breaks records as proof of concept that WB should have stuck to gritty grounded films to differentiate itself from Marvel and to make character driven films. If it is successful, hopefully it will finally convince them to abandon this stupid dream of copying Marvel and going back to the type of films that once mad them great PRIOR to Batman V Superman.

Even though this is a standalone, money is never ignored. Get ready for DC villain movies that make The Dark Knight and Man of Steel look like Sesame Street. So basically Snuff films.

"Other than an unflinching, intense and extraordinary performance from Al Pacino as the Cuban-born gangster Tony Montana, this gruesome offering has little to recommend." - Duane Birge, The Hollywood Reporter.

"Subtle it ain't, but just try turning your eyes away from this study in stylistic excess." Matt Brunson, Creative Loafing.

Some of these reviews of Scarface (my favorite film) could easily be mistaken for these new Joker reviews. I'm very excited to watch it.
