Thanks to an immense level of interest and strong reviews to boot, Todd Phillips'
Joker is laughing all the way to the top of the box office and has exceeded expections with a massive $96 million domestic launch, setting a new opening weekend record for the month of October in the process by topping previous record-holder Sony's
Venom ($80.2M).
Combined with an estimated $140.5 million haul from seventy international markets, the Joaquin Phoenix-starrer has grossed over $236.5 million in three days of release (without China).
As for the number of record broken,
Joker now holds the title for biggest October domestic opening of all-time ($96M), the biggest October international opening of all-time ($127.2M), the biggest IMAX October opening ($9M), biggest worldwide launch of all-time for October ($207.3M), a career-best start for director Todd Phillips, a career-best start for star Joaquin Phoenix, a career-best start for co-star Robert De Niro, fourth-best weekend opening for an R-rated picture in the United States, the fifth-biggest domestic opening of 2019, Warner Bros.' biggest domestic opening in two years, and the widest October release of all-time in North America (4,374 theaters).
Despite its controversial subject matter,
Joker has been awarded with a "Certified Fresh" distinction on review aggregator
RottenTomatoes, earning 70% positive reviews, and has received a stellar 90% rating from verified audience members. It's also currently boasting a B+ on
CinemaScore.

Forever alone in a crowd, Arthur Fleck seeks connection. Yet, as he trods the sooted Gotham City streets and rides the graffitied mass transit rails of a hostile town teeming with division and dissatisfaction, Arthur wears two masks. One, he paints on for his day job as a clown. The other he can never remove; it’s the guise he projects in a futile attempt to feel he’s a part of the world around him, and not the misunderstood man whom life is repeatedly beating down. Fatherless, Arthur has a fragile mother, arguably his best friend, who nicknamed him Happy, a moniker that’s fostered in Arthur a smile that hides the heartache beneath. But, when bullied by teens on the streets, taunted by suits on the subway, or simply teased by his fellow clowns at work, this social outlier only becomes even more out of sync with everyone around him.
