JOKER: More Overwhelmingly Positive Reactions, This Time From Toronto International Film Festival, Arrive

All the signs are pointing to Joker being one of the best comic book movies in recent memory, and this latest round of reactions from the Toronto International Film Festival make for interesting reading...

As you're no doubt already well aware, social media reactions and reviews coming out of Venice for Joker were overwhelmingly positive, and the same can be said for the DC Comics adaptation following the movie's debut at the Toronto International Film Festival.

There's a lot of very interesting takes here, and it seems as if the parallels the film makes to what's going on in the real world are definitely problematic to some.

That powerful message aside, though, it definitely sounds like director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix are going to take us on one heck of a ride, even if it is extremely dark and messed up. Some clips from Joker actually leaked online overnight, and if they're anything to go by, Phoenix has to be in with a chance of receiving some serious awards attention next year.

@Nebula - Yeah just like THE LAST JEDI, I wonder how fans will react if everything is different or it goes in a direction they don't like? Suicide Squad made money so its not going to flop even if it sucks.

I remember reading an article that every live action film with Joker has never flopped.

I'd like to see more unconventional adaptations of DC or Marvel comics; films that don't fit the "blockbuster" or "superhero movie" type. If competent filmmakers and actors are at helm, they can do magic with these concepts and characters. Saw a few seconds of a clip from the film and all I want now is to get my ticket already.

@WakandanQueen - I think the DC Films could be to comic book adaptations what A24 is for mainstream blockbuster films, and Vertigo is for mainstream comics. A place for creative freedom and deeper concepts. It could work.

Is this divide between the Top Critics and the regular critics score going to continue? I don’t remember seeing this stark of a difference before.

This is surprising. I know Cannes pretty much hate every movie there. And I've heard the same about TIFF. So if even they love it we got a real winner on our hands.

I was expecting the TIFF crowd to be harsher on this, but it looks like they liked it even more than the Venice crowd. I know that one of the Slashfilm guys said he hated the script but he ended up giving this 4 stars after seeing it at TIFF, so it must have really worked for him on the screen

@tmp3 - The Europeans critics are far more sever than American one you should see how they review CBM movies and blockbuster in general , specially in France.

@NightwingNad - Yeah, but a few critics seeing it at TIFF said months ago that they hated the script. The fact that they liked it makes me super surprised

Once again a grounded and gritty take on the DC universe gets immense praise and hopefully huge box office dollar PROVING that the DC universe should have followed the tone set by Christopher Nolan. Zack Snyder and Kevin Tsujihara are responsible for the biggest boneheaded mistake in film history!

Walter Hamada strikes again.

@Battabing - If Walter Hamada makes films like Joker, Man of Steel and The Dark Knight films as the archetype for the future DCEU (or whatever they call it) count me in as a fan!

Does Joker start a trade war with China in this film?

Yeah..but who cares if this film is well-made and features incredible performances from some of the greatest actors of their generation, when CLEARLY the Joker's makeup is wrong as well as the hue of his signature vest. And WHERE IS BATMAN??!!??!?

I was really disturbed by the leaked clips honestly. I was worried about the execution after reading the plot leak but seeing in on screen really worked. So I MIGHT change my mind about not seeing it in theatres. Phoenix seems like he may finally get his Oscar too.

After watching the leaked footage...my first instinct has been confirmed. Phoenix' casting is reason enough to see him in ANY movie. What an absolute force of nature.

I watched everything in the Reddit thread........ My god!

Phoenix has F ucking nailed it! I mean, I knew he'd be awesome, that was never in doubt, but after seeing all that footage, I'm not suprised by the Best Actor hype for the Oscars.

Does he get it solely based on his performance or do the old farts snub him because it's a 'comic book movie' or, will the old farts of the board genuinely enjoy this flm ignoring it being tied to the CBM genre?
