THE BATMAN Passes $730 Million At The Global Box Office Ahead Of HBO MAX Debut Next Monday

Though it definitely won't reach the $1 billion milestone ahead of its HBO Max debut next week, Matt Reeves' The Batman has continued to impress at the global box office, and has now passed $730M.

The Batman is set to make its streaming debut on HBO Max next Monday, April 18 (it'll hit HBO linear on April 23), but Matt Reeves' critically-acclaimed reboot is still performing pretty well in theaters.

The Dark Knight's latest big-screen outing now sits at $735.1 million at the worldwide box office after taking in $358 million domestically and $376 million overseas. Fans had hoped to see the movie reach the $1 billion milestone, but this is still a very impressive haul for any blockbuster in the "pandemic era," and secured The Batman's spot as the highest-grossing film of 2022 thus far, with China's Water Gate Bridge and the Uncharted movie taking the second and third spots, respectively.

Even if you're disappointed that The Batman didn't manage to join the $1B club, Warner Bros. will no doubt be very pleased with its success. A sequel has yet to be officially greenlit, but we're expecting an announcement over the next couple of weeks.

Have you been to see The Batman yet? If so, what did you think? You can check out our review here.

"Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens."

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

The Batman is rated PG-13 for “strong violence, disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material.”

A worthy sum for something that's going to be pirated heavily in the next week or 2 after 6 weeks of mainstream release.

Way to go Bats.

I think it's safe to say we'll be getting a straight up sequel outside of the HBOMAX stuff.

@UnderBelly - Pirating isn't what's going to affect the gross for the most part. Most people that pirate aren't the ones with their butts in the seats to begin with. There are some, like my brother, that will see it in the theater and grab it on the high seas too just to have a copy. Nothing changes there except the time frame.

6 weeks to free on HBOmax is what kept the $$$ lower than it should be. It's not a hard wait. I made it this far, mostly spoiler free and most general audience/casual fans probably did too.

Speaking of box office, how in the hell is No Way Home still in the top ten? It's amazing how successful that movie's been.

Look how much money you can make when it isn't day to date releases, that shit needs to never come back. If you want to watch something bad, go to the theater ya bums

Crazy to think how this movie will be on streaming and linear TV just a month and a half after it was released in theaters. We used to wait months for that to happen. I’m happy to see that this movie was a success. I feel like a sequel announcement is coming soon but I can see WB waiting until Comic Con to announce something big.

Looking forward to watching this movie for the second time next week.

@Fanmar16 - Why do you consider it low? We're almost 1/3rd through 2022 and it is the box office leader by a solid $100k. Likely to be passed by Doctor Strange yes, but I don't think it's low...

Great for a film...but a Batman film? This brand is so damaged since the days it routinely made a billion ten years ago. I am not sure this film which was good but not great changed that equation.

@Waddles - Well I suppose it is relative. But Batman is arguably the first or second most popular superhero....well used to be...It should be on the high end of the box office ladder even if it does not make a billion. It should be close. This film had to contend with a Pandemic but on the other hand it benefited from inflated premium ticket pricing for one week, no competition for a month and natural inflation since the Dark Knight films are ten years old or more.

@Waddles - HBO Max has been a big success so far. I work for WarnerMedia (Turner) and we have a bonus system tied into how the overall company does. I’ve been here almost 10 years and we just got our biggest one yet, mainly because Max is doing so well, like years ahead of schedule. And a big part of that is things like this.

So while they’re obviously not going to do simultaneous releases anymore they’re going to use any means they can to keep that momentum going. And that includes sacrificing some box office cash to get films onto the service while the buzz is still going.

@Forthas - outside of Spider-Man NWH, no movie has hit a billion in the last 2 years.

@TheSuperMex - No film franchise has a character as marketable as Spiderman. My point is that Batman used to be.

@Forthas - if there was pandemic, the movie would have made a billion already.

Everytime a WB film releases now I feel like money is left on the table. 3 of my friends didn't see the film because they knew the 6 weeks HBO max debut. These friends I consider general audiences. Fans but not really fanboys.

The Batman 730 million worldwide I gave a C+ grade movie had a lot of issues with a running at 3-hour runtime.

I went in expecting it to at least beat Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) 26% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes did $873,637,528 worldwide.

Wonder Woman (2017) = $822,854,286

I expected The Batman to compete with Aquaman's numbers = $1,148,528,393

@Waddles - 45 days was lots of time. The issue with The Batman box office opening weekend really wasn't that impressive for a Blockbuster.

The Batman needed to make 200 million or close to domestic opening weekend not 132 million. Needed to be the first largest opening in March not 5th,

I feel like the rewatchability of this is also only for certain people. That, and the HBO Max release definitely hurt it. I have friends and fam who didn’t see it and decided to wait for it on Max
