THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Chris Nolan Explains David Goyer's Comments About The Ending

In the past, David Goyer discussed with Empire Magazine the final scene of The Dark Knight Rises. He said when he finally saw it for the first time, "I got a complete lump in my throat." This has lead many to speculate that the film ends on a somber note.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine David Goyer, the screenwriter of The Dark Knight Rises describe the moment that he saw the final scene of the film.

“The final scene of ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is exactly the scene we talked about. It remained completely unchanged. We both knew in our hearts that we were onto something special. I have to tell you, having finally seen everything strung together a little while ago and seeing that scene, I got a complete lump in my throat,”

Of course some people have taken that quote to mean a grim finale, and perhaps the death of Batman. MTV caught up with Christopher Nolan and asked him if he could clarify Goyer's quote.

"I think, really, people are reading too much into David's quote, actually. If you read the context of it, he's very diplomatically talking about just fulfilling the promise of what we had initially talked about in terms of having a complete story, and ending the story."

"Really, what David was saying was that we figured out the ending before we figured out anything else. I think he was very happy with how we realized the conclusion of the story."

"Everybody talking on behalf of the film knows they don't want to ruin anything for the audience, so they're all trying to be careful."

"I don't really want to talk about the ending of the film. We wouldn't want to give that away."

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th 2012 and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

I still get the feeling the person to die in the film is Alfred...i think hes gonna sacrifice himself in someway for Bruce and keep to the promise he made to Thomas and Martha Wayne to always protect him

Goyer said its an ending theyve been wanting to do for a while but couldnt fit it in right. So I'm guessing Batman doesn't die.

Either: Batman dies, Gordon dies, 'John Blake' dies, or Bruce realizes he cannot give up being Batman and has to continue no matter the cost.

I think it will either end with a Batman/Gordon conversation like the previous movies, or Batman standing on top of a tall building or something, looking down at his city as his cape blows...

My excitement is finally building for this movie. I had to wait until after The Avengers, and The Amazing Spider-Man to finish.

Yup, but with both of the Nolan brothers on writing duty as well, all 3 of them manage to balance each other out quite well.

Besides Joss Whedon wrote that awful "Do you know what happens to a toad when it gets hit by lightning.." line of dialogue for X-Men and the script for Alien: Ressurection, but he's still one of the best writers out there.

So the Joker returns. Just like I predicted months ago. Heath Ledger is still alive and makes a comeback at the end of the movie. The whole setup was a Juaquin Phoenix style prank to a new extreme.

If I'm correct I'll have a gasp and lump in my throat at the same time.

GuardianAngel@ If it's the ending that Goyer had in mind, when he was writing Batman Begins, then it's taht Bruce finally gives up being Batman in order to marry a woman, as the Pre-Crisis Earth 2 Batman did, in order to marry Selina and have a child with her. Then it was going to lead into the Wolfgang Petersen Batman Vs. Superman movie that was scrapped. This used to be common knowledge, before things were kept tighter than Poison Ivy's... Well, before these things were as secretive as they became when Nolan got on board. The ending of Batman Begins, with Rachel's promise to Bruce was a holdover of the original plan, but when she was killed off in The Dark Knight, I figured it had gone the way of the dodo. But maybe it will end this way, after all. Except with Selina. Maybe it will end with Bruce and Selinas children, Helena and Damien playing around the newly refurbished Well, in the grounds of Wayne Manor.

Bale has already stated that he would do a fourth film if the script was right and Nolan was back. But that could be a red herring.

Still they say Barman doesn't die, but maybe Bruce Wayne does.. or gets badly injured..

@Netman - I don't think it's pretense at all. Nolan focuses on one project at a time and seems since his earlier days to simply be a very serious, intelligent guy.

We're so used to seeing media trained personalities and accepting stupid, dumb and funny as normal that we've completely forgotten what sincere, intelligent answers sound like when delivered by people who don't act like everyone they've met for the first time is their long lost buddy.

The fact he'll never do a romantic comedy, and expects more from the audience amongst other things, warms my heart even if he comes off cold to others.

Nolan brings class to the party.

@BANE5000 That makes a lot of sense. It would be the next chapter in Bruce's life. No one's actually said that this is the end of Batman, just the end of this story. Tim Burton didn't do that and most everyone can agree that we'd like to erase the memory of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Killing Alfred would definitely give the movie a hell of an emotional punch.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is gonna end up being Bruce's kid and Bruce's cowl is gonna blow in the wind and fall at his feet all Indiana Jones style ...... if Lucas was involved

Still not hyped about this movie - but that doesn't mean it won't be a decent film

I'm hoping that in the end, when it is unclear whether or not Batman is dead, we hear Alfred talking to Gordon saying, "The Batman is a legend, and legends never die." Then a long shot of the bat-signal over Gotham.

That would be a beautiful way to end it.

If this were a studio film, there'd be no question he lives. Hell, they'd have announced a second trilogy by now too.

But Nolan has complete control here, he could very easy have him die, the possibility alone is exciting even if it doesn't happen.
