THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Features 72 Minutes Of IMAX Footage; New Batman Still Released

Christopher Nolan once again discusses the benefits of shooting a film like The Dark Knight Rises, while a film cell which shows the difference between 30mm theatres and IMAX screens offers up a very cool new look at Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader.

"The sharpness and the depth of the image, projected onto those enormous screens, is simply the best quality image that has ever been invented," Christopher Nolan told The New York Times in a recent interview. As you can see from the stills below, he most certainly isn't wrong. The first represents what The Dark Knight Rises will look like in IMAX, while the second much smaller image is a representation of what moviegoers will see if they decide to view the film in the regular 35MM format. IMAX has 10x the resolution and a greater amount of detail (Batman's hand and the fog surrounding him for example). Although things get a bit technical at this point, all you really need to know is that the format is a considerably superior way of viewing the movie.

The report also confirms that the film will feature exactly 72 minutes of IMAX footage. Not surprising considering it was such a priority for the filmmaker. "We always carried at least one Imax camera through the run of the show," reveals Nolan, "so then wherever we felt a scene would lend itself to Imax, we could decide on the day to go and put that camera in. And we wound up using it more and more. When you’re talking about this large-scale studio filmmaking, the size of the camera is pretty irrelevant compared to the massive difficulties and the massive resources you’re wrangling on a daily basis. And so having this extra image quality, giving the audience the best possible technical look at what you’ve shot, is the obvious thing to do." Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ "The Dark Knight Rises" is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The screenplay is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. The film is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.
