Ben Affleck Talks BATMAN v SUPERMAN; Confirms Interest In Helming A Superhero Movie

Ben Affleck talks here about what made him decide to join the cast of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as the Caped Crusader, while also revealing that he wanted to see what it would be like on the set of a modern superhero movie because he's interesting in helming one. The Batman?

Ben Affleck being cast as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's titular Dark Knight came as a huge surprise, and it turns out that even the actor was shocked to get the call. "My first reaction was, ‘Are you sure?’" he tells Entertainment Weekly. "At the time I was 40, 41, and had just finished Argo, and I felt like ‘This seems like a strange way to get to Batman.’ But Zack convinced me." Reiterating that the movie will play on the fact that this Caped Crusader is a little older, Affleck added that Bruce Wayne will still very much be keeping up the playboy facade from the comics (and Nolan's Batman movies). "He really keeps up the image of the playboy, actively. So you have more of a dichotomy which I thought was really fun, and a little sad, like the aging playboy."

However, it turns out that Affleck may have accepted the job for an even more surprising reason. While he's found great success with the likes of The Town and Argo, the filmmaker is now keen on helming a big budget superhero movie. "I thought if I was going to direct a movie like this, which I would like to do at some point, I need to have something of a refresher course of how these movies are done," the man who is rumoured to helm The Batman in a few years time teased. Here's hoping that's confirmed at Comic-Con next week, eh? Share your thoughts below.

This is a major reason why I support Affleck since day one. I knew with him being Batman, he would direct a Batman film and it would epic as [frick]. Anyone who's watched The Town knows Affleck would do a great job directing a Batman film.

While everyone was moaning, bitching, hating, and bringing up Daredevil; me, @Tainted87 , @Cipher , and I believe @MrSotoMan were celebrating at the casting.

Wherever you're at @cipher you lovable bastard.

True, let's hope Affleck can keep it together, he's been having a bad year, personally

I hope he represents Batman at Comic Con

Damn looking at the comments from the casting article, we got some [frick]ing hypocritics and turncoats on this site from when he was cast till now.

Not gonna name you but you know who you are.

Also @cipher 's comments are gone. He needs to come back.

I don't see a problem with it for Batman.

I mean look at JL:TAS. You had a Batman who was around 10-15 years experienced. He had already had Grayson, Tim, and Barbara as sidekicks.

With Superman or Spidey, older may be strange but with Bats I don't think anyone wants to see a noob Batman you know?

I think the only thing that sucks about the age issue, is how long can Affleck play the role

I would love to see a younger Batman, eventually

But, I think this could be our best on screen Batman yet, by far

I was also one of the few who was all for the casting. In fact I was a little shocked at just how negative everyone was!

Still not 100% sold on Batfleck BUT 1,000,000% sold on Affleck directing in the DCCU

@DoktorWeezil:

titular
adjective tit·u·lar \ˈti-chə-lər, ˈtich-lər\

: having an important or impressive title but not having the power or duties that usually go with it

: having the name of the character that is featured in the title of a movie, play, etc.

@AlexanderLykins After playing Arkham Knight, I wanna see all 3 of the Rocksteady Arkham games as movies, not fussed if they make Arkham Origins as a movie though.

I really want a self contained Arkham Asylum movie that takes place entirely within the Asylum. it would be a great way to showcase several villains without requiring backstory for each. it would also be great to see a movie where the largest part of the budget is put towards production design. like the game you could have various themes for different parts of the asylum and the villains that control each area

An Affleck helmed Batman film from a script by Terrio would probably become the first CBM to win the best picture. Not even being hyperbolic... Okay maybe a little.

I totally agree, I always thought it was obvious they didn't hire him JUST to play Batman. I figured at the very least (if he didn't direct a future DCU movie) he'd be helping Snyder behind the scenes on BvS. And I'm not even sure if that's what happened, but the fact that his Argo writer re-did the script makes me think Affleck has a lot of creative control.

The DC Animated Universe is still the greatest shared superhero universe in film and television. I'm not even sure the DCEU can be better.

"This is a major reason why I support Affleck since day one. I knew with him being Batman, he would direct a Batman film and it would epic as [frick]."

Don't forget Chris Terrio! With the ( very reasonable) possibility that WB may have been the one to position Terrio for Batman V Superman aside, and not Ben Affleck, the actor could have very well influenced this decision.

This argument, of course, could only be reinforced as being a positive after we all see Batman V Superman, but given that this (oddly absent, at least on CBM) piece of news has been provided,

"Additionally, EW confirms that the script for the upcoming Justice League Part One has been completed by screenwriter Chris Terrio, who re-wrote David Goyer’s initial draft of “Dawn of Justice.”"

I'd say Chris Terrio has, and is, continuing in adding fantastic scripts to his growing collection of work.

(And yes, I agree, (as many others have already mentioned) a Ben Affleck helmed Batman film, written by Chris Terrio could be wonderful.)

So this guy litterally comes out and said he took the batman job to refresh his approach towards directing and that is ok with everybody here? It's not that he loves batman, or even think he would do a good job, just because he wants the experience to better his directing? This is the wrong reason to cast a character, especially melon head Affleck, dudes head makes him look like a pixar character, and he has never been a stand out in any movie i have seen him in. He may be a good director, but i thought argo was a terrible, boring, predictable movie, not amazingly directed. Everybody needs to jump off his wood, he was terrible as daredevil and the only time he looks ok in new trailer is in costume, which is not impressive. I don't buy Affleck as Bruce, and i think if everyone here was being honest with themselves, they would admit they can't buy affleck as Bruce either.
Only good DC casting was henry cavil, all other dccu casting is terrible.

Can't really blame people for being shocked about the casting at first, it really was out of left field. Also, seeing how we're bringing up our initial reactions on the original article, I believe I screamed "NOOOOOO!" before coming around to the casting like two pages later. Sadly those comments are deleted now. ([frick]ing robots)
