SUICIDE SQUAD Star Margot Robbie Teases An "R-Rated Girl Gang" BIRDS OF PREY Movie
Could Cathy Yan's upcoming Birds of Prey movie be Warner Bros.' first R-rated DC Films Universe installment? That's what Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie seemed to suggest during a new interview...
We recently found out that Warner Bros. had hired Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan to helm a movie based around the Birds of Prey that would feature Harley Quinn, Batgirl and several other yet-to-be announced female characters, and now some more intriguing details on the project have been teased by star Margot Robbie.
During an interview with Collider, the Academy Award-nominated actress revealed that she's actually been working on the project for three years, having first pitched the idea back when she was shooting Suicide Squad.
“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it."
Of course, just because Robbie pitched an R-rated Birds of Prey back then, it doesn't necessarily mean that it will be - but the actress was instrumental in Yan coming on board and seems to have a very clear vision for what she wants from the project, so it's definitely a strong possibility.
“And then of course having a female director to tell that story. And giving a female director the chance to do big budget stuff. They always get ‘Here’s the tiny little film’… I was like, ‘I love action. I love action films. I’m a girl. What, are we meant to only like a specific thing’?” So it was a hugely important to find a female director for this, if possible. But at the end of the day — male, female — the best director gets the job and Cathy was the best director."
And what of those other Harley Quinn-related projects that are supposedly in the works? While it sounds like they are still in development, in a separate interview with Moviefone, Robbie revealed that she's had very little to do with them and has been focusing on working towards Birds of Prey with screenwriter Christina Hodson.
So, what do you guys think about the prospect of an R-rated Birds of Prey movie? Sound off in the usual place.
