Black Adam Star Dwayne Johnson Roasted As His Failed DCEU Plans Resurface Four Years Later

Dwayne Johnson's ambitious plans for the DC Universe are being mocked all over again, as a resurfaced Black Adam sequel pitch involving Barry Keoghan's Joker goes viral on social media.

With Black Adam, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson promised to change the "hierarchy of power in the DC Universe." What no one realised is that the former pro wrestler was referring to his planned takeover of the brand.

Johnson intended to build the DC Universe around the Black Adam franchise, enlisting Henry Cavill to return as Superman for a "Black Adam vs. Superman" movie. However, his solo outing opened to negative reviews and grossed only $393.5 million at the worldwide box office.

While some comic book adaptations would kill for numbers like that now, it was deemed a failure in 2022, not least because Black Adam is said to have cost upwards of $260 million after extensive reshoots.

The actor attempted damage control, sharing profitability statements with Deadline and even tried getting fans on board with his vision by announcing a Hawkman movie. Ultimately, Warner Bros. Discovery felt differently, forming DC Studios...and one of the first things James Gunn and Peter Safran did was sever ties with The Rock (though they hinted at possibly working together in the future).

Now, four years after Black Adam's release, Johnson is getting roasted on social media all over again. "Dwayne Johnson's 2022 Pitch for Joker in Black Adam Sequel Draws Laughs" is one of the trending news stories on X, with posts drawing millions of views on the platform.

Much of the conversation centres around an interview clip which sees Johnson tease a meeting with Barry Keoghan's Joker, Superman's return, the importance of the Justice Society to the DCEU, and his ambitious plans for what might best be called the "Dwayne-CEU."

Black Adam was a major blow to the actor's career, and he's still struggling to regain his footing. In quick succession, NBC cancelled Young Rock, his football league, the XFL, fell flat, and a WWE return—which introduced a popular new heel persona, the Final Boss—was marred by controversy.

He received mostly positive reviews for The Smashing Machine, but his expected Oscar nomination never materialised, and a return to blockbuster fare this summer with the live-action Moana proved a disaster.

"I loved making Black Adam. We had a great time. Loved creating those characters and introducing other characters, as well, in that universe," Johnson said earlier this year. "Had a great time. Wish that universe well. And on to others."

Pierce Brosnan's Dr. Fate was awesome though...

The ending of Black Adam where he's like "Actually, I shouldn't be a ruler... Because Democracy is cool! And everyone should have equal rights!" was one of the most grievous mischaracterizations in the entire DCEU.

Maybe worse than Batman shooting missiles at security guards.

He had good intention. He wanted to give THE FANS what they wanted to see. Pierce Brosnan was perfect casting for Dr. Fate, Hawk Man was great casting also. Him as Black Adam was perfect. Great costumes & action...not so great villain but I'll digress. Still better film than Gunns Diaper Man 2025 & his Supergirl😂🤣😂😂😂

@ClarkJoeKent - 100%

In hindsight, I would've liked to see what was next in that world rather than not watching Spergirl, Peacemaker or Creature Commandos.

@ClarkJoeKent - lol Dwayne Johnson's only concern was giving himself what he wanted. Black Adam was dog shit and failed drastically in reception and box office compared to Superman.

Kahron0 - 10/23/2026, 11:52 AM
@ClarkJoeKent - The fans wanted a straight forward Man of Steel 2 years ago before the “Dwayne-CEU”. The Rock simply used the return of Henry Cavill and dangled it in front of fans as a way to introduce his ideas that nobody wanted.

The idea that fans were clamoring for a Black Adam centered DC Universe starring the Rock is just history revisionism.

@Kahron0 - Gunn shills holla like hit dogs. Black Adam isn't the center wasn't the center. Just a film introducing the character that fought Superman & Shazam in the comics & animated cartoons. I wanted to see that. It also is streaming better than Gunns Diaper Man & Supergirl...like I wanted to see anything Gunn introduced.😂😂😂😂😂

ClarkJoeKent - 10/23/2026, 12:22 PM
@TheWinkler - Then why is it streaming better than Gunns Diaper Man & Supergirl on HBO?😂😂😂😂

@KennKathleen - Exactly, these Gunn Gooners😂😂will hate you for saying that!😂😂
TheWinkler
TheWinkler - 10/23/2026, 12:33 PM
@ClarkJoeKent - I don't know, maybe because more people would rather stream it for free than pay to see it in theaters, hence why it was literally the final nail in Snyders DC coffin when it flopped? I mean damn, the movie was SO GOOD that it spawned a sequel and had shareholders on board, oh wait...that was Gunn's Superman.

You Snyder guys all sound the same. Cheering for a losing team (hell, the team doesn't even exist anymore) with the enthusiasm of someone whose team just won the world series. It's pathetic.

@TheWinkler - Whats funny is Gunns contract is set to EXPIRE April 2027...not renewed, not restructured, & not resigned. Peter Safran is trying to get the job at Netflix. (THE WRITINGS ON THE WALL😂) Zack Snyder films is ONLY 5..MOS, BvS, Aqua Man 1, Wonder Woman 1, & Zacks JLA...his first 3 movies made MORE ($3 Billion Dollars) than Marvels & Gunns 1st three. Gunns films made a total of $740 Million😂😂😂talk about LOOSING! He sold HALF as many tickets than Zacks MOS. Then he alienated over HALF the fan base. His DiaperMan was REJECTED internationally. Millie Alcock contract EXPIRED(only 3 film deal DiaperMan, Supergirl, & MOT) same as Corenswet. In order to keep their jobs MOT would have to be a BLOCKBUSTER...AINT HAPPENING!!!😂😂Not enough Gunn Glazers. Peacemaker CANCELLED, Creature Commandos couldn't get 200 streams on Youtube..& thats FREE!😂😂😂Supergirl cost $200 Million to make & grossed $126 Million WORLDWIDE!!!!
While The Saudis & Ellison is in talks with Snyder & Affleck...NOW!
Cant make this shit up. Paramount has Gunn on EGG SHELLS!😂😂 Hes cant even make a Batman or a Wonder Woman film cuz they won't let him! He was hired to help facilitate the sale of WB...THATS IT! If not he'd have a NEW contract. HE doesn't! James Dunn April 2027!😂😂😂😂😂

@SATW42 - That doesn't mean DC is centered around Black Adam. Black Adam IS one of 3 of the most POWERFUL characters in DC..& he can BEAT Superman because his powers are MAGIC BASED. If you read the comics you wouldn't have commented.

@ClarkJoeKent - As crazy as it all sounds if I could piggy back on Ezra Miller as he hits 88mph and successfully go back in time, I'd do my best to convince David Zaslav to hand the keys to the kingdom to The Rock. The Dwayne-CEU is looking pretty good right now.
TheWinkler

He would've had entire sequel written where Black Adam absolutely smoked Shazam and Superman.

It would've been BvS 2.0

TheWinkler - 10/23/2026, 12:23 PM
@HashTagSwagg - oh I absolutely agree! I just definitely think that he would've made sure the line was drawn that he wouldnt lose to Supes, and furthermore, it would never be questioned if he could.
ClarkJoeKent
ClarkJoeKent - 10/23/2026, 1:12 PM
@TheWinkler - In the comics & animated cartoons...HE DID SMOKE BOTH OF THEM! His powers is MAGIC BASED, one of Supermans BIGGEST weakness's. The ONLY way they beat Black Adam was to get him to say SHAZAM! & turned back mortal. Gunn Glazers dont read comics & never followed these character's tory. They need simple CHATGPT scripts, Bright Colors & forced comedy.😂😂😂

I mean , his pitch to essentially take over DC was funny but I don’t get rehashing it unless it’s just been a slow news day so far…

Also Black Adam was certainly not great or even good but I did get some mild enjoyment out of it tbh.

@Awest66 - Well for one it sounds like we'd have Robert Pattinson getting out of that limo at the end of the Flash movie instead of George Clooney.

And he even teased a Three Jokers thing with Leto and Phoenix. Maybe Joaquin's Arthur would have been an early Joker proto-type in the Dwayne-CEU and Leto would be Jason Todd (or Dick Grayson) as was hinted at throughout the Snyderverse.

I mean... I'm kinda in.

@ ClarkJoeKent - I’m not sure what Gunn has to do with my initial comment. I was pointing out that there wasn’t any clear, widespread demand for a Black Adam vs. Superman movie before Black Adam was released. If anything, people were primarily asking for Man of Steel 2 and Henry Cavill’s return as Superman, rather than having him appear in Black Adam or Shazam. Black Adam is historically a Shazam villain, not a Superman villain, and The Rock himself repeatedly emphasized his desire to position Black Adam as a major force in the DCEU, even comparing his ambitions to Thanos. He also prioritized a Superman showdown while downplaying Shazam’s importance (which Zach Levi criticized him for). Pretending his plans were simply about introducing the character ignores that context.

You also seem more interested in turning this into a Gunn vs DCEU fan war than addressing what I’m actually saying. Disagreeing with you doesn’t automatically make someone a “Gunn shill.” That’s just a lazy label that allows you to dismiss opposing arguments without addressing them.

For the record, my views on the DCU are mixed. I enjoyed Superman despite its flaws, mostly liked Lanterns but had issues with its lack of constructs and weak finale, really disliked Supergirl (couldn’t even finish it), and thought Peacemaker Season 2 was a downgrade from the first. So how exactly does my willingness to criticize the DCU make me a shill? Unless you’re suggesting that anyone who doesn’t hate the DCU as much as you do must be a paid defender, your argument falls apart. I can acknowledge the franchise’s shortcomings without agreeing with every criticism you make.
