Anthony Mackie Doesn't See Why BLACK PANTHER Needs To Have A Black Director
"You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit!" Marvel seems to be searching for an African-American director to helm their Black Panther adaptation, but Avengers star Anthony Mackie doesn't think it's a necessity at all. Click on to find out what he had to say about it...
With Ava DuVernay set to helm the Black Panther movie at one stage, and the likes of F. Gary Gray and Ryan Coogler rumored to be in contention, it definitely seems that Marvel is looking for a black director for the project. After all, T'Challa was the first black superhero in mainstream American comics, and has remained arguably the most popular - so it only makes sense that the studio would want to give an African-American director the opportunity to tell his story on the big screen... right?
Well, Anthony Mackie doesn't think so. The Falcon actor was asked about the director search during an interview with the Daily Beast, and maintains that the ability to properly translate T'Challa's story should be paramount.
“I don’t think it’s important at all. As a director your job is to tell a story. You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct ‘Seabiscuit!’ The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice. I think men can direct women, and two of my greatest work experiences were with female directors. So I think it all depends. May the best man — or woman — win.”
Do you guys agree? There's much more from Mackie at the link below. Chadwick Boseman will make his debut as Black Panther in next year's Captain America: Civil War, but the search for his solo movie's director continues.
