Anthony Mackie Doesn't See Why BLACK PANTHER Needs To Have A Black Director

"You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct Seabiscuit!" Marvel seems to be searching for an African-American director to helm their Black Panther adaptation, but Avengers star Anthony Mackie doesn't think it's a necessity at all. Click on to find out what he had to say about it...

With Ava DuVernay set to helm the Black Panther movie at one stage, and the likes of F. Gary Gray and Ryan Coogler rumored to be in contention, it definitely seems that Marvel is looking for a black director for the project. After all, T'Challa was the first black superhero in mainstream American comics, and has remained arguably the most popular - so it only makes sense that the studio would want to give an African-American director the opportunity to tell his story on the big screen... right?

Well, Anthony Mackie doesn't think so. The Falcon actor was asked about the director search during an interview with the Daily Beast, and maintains that the ability to properly translate T'Challa's story should be paramount.

“I don’t think it’s important at all. As a director your job is to tell a story. You know, they didn’t get a horse to direct ‘Seabiscuit!’ The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice. I think men can direct women, and two of my greatest work experiences were with female directors. So I think it all depends. May the best man — or woman — win.”

Do you guys agree? There's much more from Mackie at the link below. Chadwick Boseman will make his debut as Black Panther in next year's Captain America: Civil War, but the search for his solo movie's director continues.

"The thing is I don’t think the race of the director has to do with their ability to tell a story. I think it’s all about the director’s ability to be able to relate to that story and do it justice."

What if the race of the director IS what gives them the ability to relate to a story that is heavily dependent on race? Or for that matter, what if the gender of the director is precisely what makes them relate to a story that revolves around a female lead and do it proper justice?

Sometimes, that DOES factor into the infamous "best person for the job". Given that both WB/DC and Marvel seem to agree with this mindset is all the proof one needs, I think.

It really depends on the context of things i.e. context, background, and who the person of focus, in the movie, is. Not all people of the same ethnicity have the same mindset or thought processing just like how all people don't have the same mindset or thought process, or even background. However, when doing movies, it all comes down to the understanding of a character. Although it helps, race isn't the biggest factor in deciding who helms a movie. I mean, you get goody two-shoe and scholarly writers/directors to make narratives of gangsters and other things that they have ever experienced in their life. Hell, just because the director is black doesn't mean that they know everything about growing up in a tribe and hunting animals and shit like T'Challa.

So, who's been the more stupid this week: Jeremy Renner or Anthony Mackie?

Edward Zwick did a great job of directing Blood Diamond, and is probably why Djimon Hounsou has the career magnitude he does today.

I say let a director who can get into the ether of what makes a good T'Challa story helm it before being caught up on this being a movie made by a director of the first "black" avenger.

I say this AS an African American too.

At the end of the day he's one-hundred percent right. It'd be ideal to get a black person who understands the weight of bringing the greatest black superhero ever created to life to direct the movie. but it's FAR from essential.

The Hurricane is an amazing movie and that was directed by Norman Jewison

I totally understand why it matters but I agree with Mackie, anyone can direct a great movie if their passionate, talented, and have a good understanding of the material

In better more controversial Anthony Mackie opinions, he supports Donald Trump. OH BOY POLITICS AND COMICS!

marvel coould be trying to get someone who can relate to the character the most. ya know that kind of person might be the best one for the job.

Perfectly said. Hollywood has a problem of overlooking female and black Directors. The fix to this is not to use them in only stories about black characters and women. The fix is to give good female and black directors the same look and opportunity as whites and males equally.

I find it funny people are MORE offended that he likes Donald Trump. LOL. So what? That's his opinion. Mark Ruffalo likes nut ball Bernie Sanders. No one gives him flak for that.

True it doesn't need one, there is no such thing as a Wakandan director anyway...but I find it hard to believe that there isn't a black director capable and wanting to make a great Black Panther movie so trying to hire one makes all the sense in the world to me.

I mean what he's saying isn't completely bogus. Yeah an African American director would be great but it really comes down to who can tell the best story.
