Have The AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Confirmed Ryan Coogler's Return For The BLACK PANTHER Sequel?

It's no secret that a sequel to Black Panther will likely arrive during Marvel Studio's Phase 4, & now the Avengers: Infinity War directors may have confirmed Ryan Coogler's return to the director's chair.

After becoming one of the highest grossing films by Marvel Studios, Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther already has fans clamoring for a sequel to the record breaking film, and with the King of Wakanda set to have a significant role in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s even more unlikely that the anticipation for that sequel will die down.

Either way, a sequel to Marvel’s hit film will almost certainly arrive sometime during Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet, while a follow-up is a sure thing, there has been little word on whether fans can expect to see Ryan Coogler (Creed) return to direct the second installment.

However, during a recent press junket for Avengers: Infinity War, the Russo Brothers may have let slip Coogler’s involvement with the sequel.

“We did allow James [Gunn], Jon Watts, and Ryan Coogler to see the movie to this point,” Joe Russo said, revealing some of the few people to have seen Avengers: Infinity War. Of course, on its own this doesn’t reveal Coogler’s involvement, however, the explanation for why the directors were able to see the film may have done just that. “So, yes you have to be working on a film that this will be affecting your storytelling moving forward.”

This obvioulsy isn’t one hundred percent confirmation that Coogler will be directing the Black Panther sequel, but it does strongly suggest that the director will at least be involved in the film's development. These comments, along with Kevin Feige's statements about Marvel already having a strong direction for Black Panther 2, implies the director is on board. After all, Coogler has already expressed interest in a second installment.

He’ll be back, I’m pretty sure he’s just working on other projects in the mean time

@ThePanther - he has one film he is shooting this year that is set to drop next year.

That Feb 2022 date seems like it was put in place to give him some breathing room.

Pretty much, from the sounds of it. Was hoping he’d come back. Great to have it confirmed (at least somewhat).

Also, in the middle of Guardians Vol. 2 for the big MCU rewatch. I don’t care what anyone says; this movie’s [frick]in’ awesome.

@MUTO123 - It's weird. There are moments in GotG2 that I really dislike, and then there are moments that are some of my favorite in the MCU.

It's definitely a film that brings the feels when it wants to.

For Ryan Coogler to return

Awesome if that's the case. I want Marvel Studios to give him the budget and time he needs to make an even better movie. He's one of the best directors in hollywood. If any of you haven't seen Creed you should watch it.

@Comicbookart - I know right? The dude made one of the goofiest ideas for a spin off into arguably the best in the franchise. Which is amazing since the original is considered one of the greatest boxing movies ever made.

@NotoriousWolf23 - Yeah. Not really bad. Just felt like they were making a Spider-Man just for the sake of it instead of trying to do or say something with it.

@Redhood92 - Damn that animatronics mask looks 100x better than the power rangers mask they went with.

@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - ikr the animatronic mask looks closer to the comics but they changed it because it was too scary for children... That mask will give you nightmares

If Ryan Coogler was smart he'd play the Christopher Nolan game. Hold the character hostage to get his big budget original projects funded while intermitedly working on the franchise.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 4/20/2018, 11:18 PM
@MrDandy - Which works a hell of a lot better in the MCU than it did for the Nolan-verse, because you're not leaving actors in the lurch for a few years between projects, or letting the cultural heat on the character cool.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 4/21/2018, 5:54 AM
@MrDandy - Coogler isnt a big budget guy outside of Marvel. Nolan was very much a big budget guy outside of
TDK.

Coogler is a small projects kind of guy. His next film is aaboit a school test cheating scandal.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 4/21/2018, 7:37 AM
@BlackBeltJones - Nolan wasn't a "big budget guy" before Batman Begins either. His most expensive before Batman was Insomnia at 45 million compared to Coogler's 42 million Creed.

Coogler did for Panther what Gunn did for the Guardians: created a compelling world from characters that could easily have not resonated with audiences. That said, I think Marvel has learned not to be as eager to jump into sequels as most traditional studios are. Rehashing the formula without a compelling hook is how you get Iron Man 2's and Dark Worlds. But what they want is Winter Soldiers, Dark Knights, and Ragnaroks.

@Spock0Clock - I don't know about the part with audiences not resonating with it. Honestly, when you get right down to it, Black Panther is basically Batman if he owned a country instead of a company and was African. Naturally Batman is crazy popular, even after those DCEU movies and the Madea movies prove just how strong the African American market truly is. I've been saying for the longest time that they're just sitting on a pile of money with this property and are instead resorting to films like Ant Man.

Lem1
Lem1 - 4/21/2018, 5:53 AM
Damn, I hope not. People brought a lotta socio-political baggage to that movie and it seems to me that clouded their minds to the fact that it was kinda mediocre in its execution.
Black Panther himself was rather unimpressive in his own movie; Russo Bros. made a waaay more slick character of him in Civil War!
So I doubt Coogler won't be back because of the success of the movie, but I hope we get a better director...or maybe, by some Strange sorcery, Coogler manages to watch some Ridley Scott period pieces and hear Africanesque scores like Zimmer's "The Power of One" and Jerry Goldsmith's "Congo" and "The Ghost and The Darkness".

AgeofApocalypse - 4/21/2018, 6:05 AM
@Lem1 - I miss Jerry Goldsmith. His scores for “Planet of the Apes”, “Coma”, and “Alien” (the original, not what was actually used in ththe film) are my absolute favorites! Imagine a serialistic “Dr. Strange” score with his always unusual orchestrations. That would’ve been killer!
PsychoticSpaceRaccoon
PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - 4/21/2018, 6:22 AM
@Lem1 - Mediocre? Most people have BP in their top 10 MCU films, which at this point is a very competitive block of films.

While It's only my 7th favorite MCU film, I would not describe the result as "mediocre."It's a well-paced action movie with some funny and touching moments that also happens to speak to larger socio-political and cultural issues.
