BLACK PANTHER Director Ryan Coogler Reveals Original Plans For Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa In WAKANDA FOREVER

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has revealed his amazing, unfortunately scrapped, plans for the version of the sequel that was set to be headlined by the late Chadwick Boseman.

Chadwick Boseman's star was already on the rise in Hollywood before his standout performances in movies like Captain America: Civil War and Black Panther. However, the latter set the stage for him to become one of the world's biggest stars, and major award success was almost certainly in his future.

Tragically, Boseman's life was cut short after he lost a hard-fought battle with cancer in 2020. The actor's passing sent shockwaves across the world and left Marvel Studios without a T'Challa for its planned Black Panther sequel.

The decision was made not to recast the role; instead, the character died off-screen, and Shuri inherited the Black Panther mantle in 2022's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. She will continue playing the hero in Avengers: Doomsday, but is expected to soon pass the baton to T'Challa's son, Toussaint/T'Challa II.

Talking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, filmmaker Ryan Coogler reflected on his relationship with Boseman, revealing that the actor was too unwell to read his Black Panther 2 script.

"I finished it, and I hit him up to read it. He was too sick to read it, bro. That was kind of how the timing was. He was at a place where it wasn't gonna happen. Our relationship was really interesting. He meant a lot to me. I found out after his passing from his family and from his friends how much I meant to him. I wondered if he knew just how much he meant to me. He protected me from a lot, bro. Our relationship was one of a lot of protection, you know?"

"I was convinced on the toughest days on Panther that I was going to get fired. I would say it all the time. If the actors [were] taking their time to get out of makeup, I'm like, 'Yo, you got to hurry up, or they're going to fire me.' One day, he took me to the side and was like, 'Yo, stop saying that.' I was like, 'Man, I really feel that way.' He was like, "Look at me, bro. I would never let that happen to you. I would not let that happen to you.' Looking back, he was always protecting me."

"One of the strongest people was having his strength taken from him by this disease. It damaged me, bro. Probably irreparably, to be honest with you. But I love that script. I put so much into that version of the movie. I felt like I had gotten to know Chadwick as a performer. I threw a lot at Chad in the first Panther, but I realised I was just scratching the surface. Now I know what he can do. I'm going to push him to the limit."

Horowitz asked Coogler if there were any scenes, in particular, that he'd been excited to shoot in the original version of the sequel. With that, he went on to reveal the movie's scrapped plot and what he had planned for T'Challa and his son as they attempted to fend off an invading Namor.

"It was like a 180-page draft chock-full of them. The big thing about the script was this thing called the 'Ritual of Eight,' where when a prince is eight years old, he has to go spend eight days in the bush with his father and amongst them, and amongst those eight days, they have to go into the bush without any tools. The prince has to listen to everything that's asked of him by his father. But the rule is that for those eight days, the prince can ask the father any question, and the father has to answer."

"During the course of those eight days, Namor launches an attack. He had to deal withsomebody who was like insanely dangerous, but because of this ritual, his son had to be like joined at his hip the whole time. He was engaging in negotiations, fights, and his son had to be right there, or he'd have to violate this ritual, which had never been broken. That was what the movie was. [With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever], I got a chance to make a movie about women. I love that movie so much."

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was still a great movie—it received positive reviews and grossed over $859 million worldwide—but we clearly missed out on something special here.

Still, Boseman's indelible impact continues to be felt, and with Marvel Studios now set to shift the spotlight back to T'Challa (whether it's a Variant or an adult Toussaint), the Black Panther will remain a focal point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward.

I still think they should've recast but Coogler had a say in this as well, and judging by this article that was never going to happen. Coogler and Gunn are the only two directors at marvel that get Carte blanche since they're writers AND directors. Stop hiring Rick and Morty rejects to write this crap

@bobevanz - To pull off that kind of narrative at the core of a movie you need a REALY GREAT actor in the main role. I mean most considered Will Smith a great actor but failed to pull of a similar kind of plot with his Son well. A more formulaic CBM a recast could have worked, something like that it could EASILY fail and issues with what they did make aside the second film WAS good even if not the great it could have been had Chad not passed.

IF it had been me however I'd have retconned slightly that Shuri wasn't snapped after all and set the second movie during the blip so they could still deal with Boseman's passing respectfully but in a way that naturally allowed him to be recast and return prior to the Avengers films but I DO get why the director and cast didn't want to recast for the second film and respect it, recasts oft fail even sans the emotional aspect when due to the actor dying.

THIS would have been the best use of phase4/multiverse.

I'd be more than happy to see BP3 with the beginning showing Shuri inventing the cure, and we do the original script introducing the new T'Challa.

@KennKathleen - there was so much that could have naturally comprised the post-endgame phases. Obviously a solid BP story or2 included. I feel like the first phases were certainly about cap, Tony, Thor, and Loki, with seeds planted for other characters to grow after endgame: Doctor strange, BP, and spider man mostly. Multiverse of madness and wakanda forever were nice, but seriously in how many years, that’s it? It sucks to not have Chadwick, but they could have introduced his son as a viable character in part 3 by now, and we could have some idea what strange is up to in that part 3 as well. Shang chi got done dirty with no sequel. I know they wanted to capitalize on the wave of popularity but they also used inspiration like Gorr, and the Hawkeye life as a weapon (not sure that’s the right title), she hulk attorney at law, etc for subpar product. I may be amongst the few who enjoyed the marvels, but given where this is going, captain marvels young tagalong could have been a newly introduced child version of rogue instead of Kamala. She hulk could have been established as being in the Deadpool universe as well (it’s the universe where some people know they’re being watched).

I’m rambling now but the point is, there was a lot of wasted potential that was redirected for unnecessary stuff.

Man , his original version of BP 2 sounded really interesting tbh…

It could have served as a nice parallel to the first one which had an element of father & sons to it with the relationship between T Chaka and T Challa aswell as Killmonger and N’Jobu so to the then have the center of the sequel be T Challa’s relationship with his own son felt like a nice evolution of that theme but oh well.

Anyway , Wakanda Forever was still solid as a movie about grief but it’s just sad that we couldn’t see more of Chadwick’s T Challa since I feel he would have no doubt been a leading figure of the MCU!!.

@Highflyer - Better still allow for it to be turned into a one off limited run comic and maybe also even an animation based on it with all profits going to a cancer charity would be great but half decent chance it will leak, intentionally or otherwise at some point.

IMO as DENZEL WASHINGTON is confirmed for BP3, I'd want him to play a VILLAIN like no other. He could play Tchalla and Suri's unknown UNCLE who was banished for wanting to share WAKUNDA'S knowledge with the world and now he's back and PISSED OFF lol. He'd CHEW UP every scene he's gonna be in. You could connect him to MAGNETO as a friend of his. Just my thoughts

@Malatrova15 - Actually doesn't sound bitter at all. I think the word you were looking for is gracious. He doesn't hide the disappointment over the circumstance or loss of what seems like a good friend. But he sounds proud and grateful for the movie he was able to make.

@Malatrova15 - Whether or not you enjoyed the movie, probably has no bearing whatsoever on how he feels about it. Angela Bassett was the first actor nominated for an academy award in a MCU movie.

They should adopt this for Black Panther 3, but have Shuri spend the 8 days with T'Challa's son.

@hainesy - the users if this site wich represent the mayority of cbm watchers ....aré ready to move on from Shuri as Black panther as much as we aré ready to forget the Sam Wilson Captain América blunder .
Shuri can still watch over Young Tchalla for a weekend...hell she can even take him to Disney Florida AND then to party at Mar a Lago

We are where we are. Move forward. I fully trust Coogler to come up with something great. I don't blame him much for the underwhelming BP 2 since he had to change everything after the death of his excellent lead actor.

It is sure going to be interesting as speculation for the new adult BP actor gets burning hot.

He’s living in his own fantasy world by the sound of it. What does ‘and I hit him up to read it’ even mean? Both of his movies had some terrible scenes which just felt half finished like the waterfall fight scene in the first one for example. And don’t get me started on Namor, what a waste of such a prestigious character, screwing him up was basically treason, or heresy.

@Spike101 - "What does ‘and I hit him up to read it’ even mean?"

Pretty darn clearly "I sent him a draft for him to read". Not that hard to understand.

@FinnishDude - ‘I hit him up’ makes no sense whatsoever unless he means he punched him up into the air… so I’m not sure where you got your translation from to be honest.

@Spike101 - Easy to work out from the context of the whole even if not aware of a specific slang term

hit me up
slang Contact me.
I gave that cute boy my number and told him to hit me up sometime.
A: "Would you want to go out sometime?" B: "Yeah, hit me up—let's make it happen."
A: "Brendan told me he thinks you're pretty." B: "Really? Well, tell him to hit me up!"
See also: hit, up
hit up
slang
1. To go to a particular place.
Let's hit up the mall—I'm sure we can find a present for her there.
Dude, with the way your wrist is swollen, you should probably hit up Urgent Care.
Time to hit up the grocery store because we are out of just about everything.
2. To contact someone or something. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "hit" and "up."
Hit me up whenever you need help.
I hope that cute guy hits me up—I did give him my number.
You should hit someone up in IT because that error message does not look good.
3. To ask someone for something, usually money. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "hit" and "up."

I liked most of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The only mistake was the inclusion of that horrible Riri Williams character.

In the german dub i saw, Namor is pronounced as it is in the comics and the fight between the female Black Panther and the Submariner is brutal.
The attack on Wakanda was something that Namor would do in the comics and the death of T'Challa's and Shuri's mother was handled really well.

Originally Ironheart wasn't in the script.

Black Panther 2 turned out pretty damn well considering the impossibly terrible circumstance it was created under. Chadwick was very special and it still stings a little every time I think about how soon he left us. I would’ve loved to see this version of the movie. The MCU and BP franchise need a T’Challa.
