Marvel Studios made a big effort to cement Shuri as a major part of the Black Panther franchise in the 2018 movie, singling her out as of the smartest minds in the MCU. She put that to good use in Avengers: Infinity War, but like her brother T'Challa, the hero was among those blipped out of existence by Thanos.

Now, she's back, but with T'Challa no longer by her side, what role will she play in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?

Talking to Empire Online, actress Letitia Wright spoke about how Shuri's journey reflects her own in the wake of Chadwick Boseman's death. "Shuri’s journey has allowed me to grieve, to cry, to laugh, and to gain strength that I never thought I could ever have," she explains. "Trials and tribulations make you who you are. You either fold or you get up and go again."

"I feel like Shuri kept looking at me every day, asking me if I was gonna fold or go again. And I just kept going until healing started to happen for me."

The site then put it to Wright that, in the comic books, it's Shuri who inherits the Black Panther mantle after T'Challa is no longer able. Will this version of the character follow in her footsteps? "That’s a tricky question to answer," she says. "I had a chat about it with Ryan and Chad when we were making Black Panther, and we touched on it briefly."

"When I realised I was playing Shuri, it was something that I really looked forward to." Will it happen in the Black Panther sequel? That remains to be seen, though we'd say there's a good chance she's the one who suits up on November 11.

She's kind of annoying... And embarrassed Banner in Infinity War.

Good luck.

@Lokiwasright - Banner is use to embarrassment, he'll be alright.

It's been made clear by now that she was the original choice. Whether or not they actualy go through with it after all the BTS drama and reported reshoots, however, remains to be seen.

@DrReedRichards - there’s a newly released picture from the movie where it’s definitely a guy in the suit, unless it’s a flashback or for some reason they gave a guy being a stunt double for a female character.

Was a really good show. Is a good reason why you should keep physical media copies of stuff you like, because they'll try and erase it from the internet.

"Possibly" becoming the next Black Panther?!

She was literally confirmed as Black Panther on the LEGO set:

@kylo0607 - exactly, plus she is upfront in everything they release. She's so becoming the next BP or marvel is really playing (doubt that they care enough to do that)

That'd be so shit, but probably what is gonna happen.

The best way to have honored Chadwick Boseman would have been to make sure that T'CHALLA lived on for films to come. It was a mistake to kill off the character. I would think that Chadwick would want a black superhero to continue being present in this genre for all who love the character and what he represented.

@ObserverIO - She's not T'Challa. Shuri's first appearance in the comics was early 2000s? T'Challa's first appearance was in the Late 60's and appeared in numerous comic books and has his own title book many times since. His character deserved to live on. His character has been read by many generations of comic book fans. Do you read comic books?

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - She's more T'Challa from the comics than even T'Challa was. She's the one with the smarts and the technological innovation.

@ObserverIO - You mean she's more Black Panther. T'Challa is a person.

Anyways you seem to be a fan of Shuri and that's awesome. I feel that killing off T'Challa because of the death of Chadwick was a mistake. As a comic book reader who has numerous Black Panther comics, I think this is a waste of a great character.

"Trials and tribulations make you who you are. You either fold or you get up and go again."

Love that.
She basically summed up the essence of a superhero there.

A lot of trolls hating on the actress, but she's really good. You would know if you watch her in anything other than superhero films, she will be great BP

@MILESSPIDERMAN -
I mean, the actress actively pretended to be anti-vax to exploit the studios.

In terms of the character, she was the least likable part of Black Panther and Infinity War. She does pretty much nothing except try and do a meme and insult people while claiming to be the smartest person around.

aurorsand146 - 9/25/2022, 12:02 PM
@Scarilian - Did she really claim to be the smartest person around?? Without getting into anti-vax territory, I think Letitia did a good job considering Shuri was bascically written as the “annoying, smartass little sister” character not a “next-in-line for the Black Panther mantle” character bc nobody could’ve seen Chadwick passing away so soon.

The Avengers have a time travel machine, how hard it would be to write a movie where Tchalla's son travels back in time for whatever reasons and becomes the new Black Panther.
