AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Co-Director Joe Russo Thinks A BLACK WIDOW Movie Is Coming

After being a part of the MCU for years, reports have been pointing to Black Widow finally getting her own film by 2020. Now, Infinity War co-director, Joe Russo, has briefly commented on that possibility.

Avengers: Infinity War is nearly here, and with its arrival fans have been treated to a steady stream of interviews with various members of the cast and crew. The latest interview sees Joe Russo, half of the film’s directing duo, answering questions alongside one of Infinity War’s producers, Trinh Tran.

Among the questions facing the director and producer were a number about the importance of having female voices in the film industry.

The female voice is very important,” Tran explained. “What’s great about working with Joe and Anthony at Marvel is that they allow those voices to be heard.” The producer also discussed more specifically the presence of female characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by saying heroes like Black Widow and Captain Marvel are characters that "little girls can look up to."

Following Tran's mention of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, the two were asked whether this means the former Russian Spy could be getting her own solo film. While the question seems to have been meant somewhat as a joke, Joe Russo did reply by simply saying, "I think it's coming."

Given the context around that question, it's entirely possible the director was simply having some fun and was merely speculating on the character's future. After all, the director has already expressed his excitement for a possible Black Widow film. However, given the director is use to answering questions like these more carefully, it's interesting that he would provide a seemingly more definitive answer about the possibility of fans a Black Widow film.

An unprecedented cinematic journey ten years in the making and spanning the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War” brings to the screen the ultimate, deadliest showdown of all time. The Avengers and their Super Hero allies must be willing to sacrifice all in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos before his blitz of devastation and ruin puts an end to the universe. Anthony and Joe Russo direct the film, which is produced by Kevin Feige. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee are the executive producers. Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely wrote the screenplay. “Avengers: Infinity War” releases in U.S. theaters on April 27, 2018.

Guys, I'm going to die on Wednesday, April 25th... Since I've got tickets to Avengers Infinity War at Midnight... Wish me luck! I'm going to see the movie again several times this weekend.

Hang on with me guys!

Black Widow has no super powers, no cool costume, no gadgets, and no interesting villains. I want to like this but am thinking it would basically be a James Bond film starring a woman. Of course having said that, I'd likely watch Scarjo sell Tupperware on QVC, so I'd probably be in.

@Mugwamp - You say like a James Bond film like that’s a bad thing.

@Mugwamp - Most comicbook movies nowadays aren't really the kind of true solo films like they used to be. If it's not an origin movie (and Black Widow probably shouldn't really be one since she's been a headliner in six movies already), it's much more likely to be like Winter Soldier or Ragnarok with some notable co-stars.

I think Civil War showed that you can pack a lot of characters into a movie and still have it legitimately be titled "Captain America", and if they did something similar with Widow, I think it just underlines how prominent and important Black Widow's character really is.

A story about her where she is the main agent of the plot, even though she's surrounded by all these other characters with their own weight and agency just secures her place as major player. There's no reason this has to be some 1990's spin-off where a side character goes off on their own separate adventure because you're afraid she'll be overshadowed by the real main characters.

And the Mission Impossible movies have been getting by just fine with a liberal use of futuristicky gadgets. I feel like that hologram mesh mask probably has some applications left in it.

Widow... very much like Falcon, war machine, and Hawkeye ... work very well as support characters. With the right director and genre I'd be interested to see them flesh her out significantly more in her solo outing

She needs Cap, Falcon, Hawkeye or Bucky to be in the movie with her

Meh. If she gets a film gotta give one to other secondary charcters too. Not everyone can get a franchise. She's never been that interesting or a standout character in any of these films. Now a movie of comic book super solider Widow would be awesome. MCU Widow is bland.

I’ve certainly been in love with Scarlett Johansson since Match Point, but I’m hard pressed to see why this movie should happen this late in the game. Maybe it’s misdirection from revealing her fate in Avengers 4, but short of being a prequel it just seems kind of odd. And Scarlett isn’t getting any younger; which is not a knock, as I find her more attractive now than ever before.

Given her past and the way she is now do we really little girls looking up to her? Don't get me wrong, I like the character but I am an adult.

With the right talent and director and with a gripping story it could be a huge success, no one knew Black Panther would become the character and phenomenon that it became, the right mixture of talent can help this character reach new heights.
