Marvel's Mahershala Ali-Led BLADE Movie Loses Aaron Pierre Amid Numerous Script Rewrites

Mahershala Ali walked on stage during Marvel Studios' 2019 San Diego Comic-Con panel to reveal that he would be portraying Blade but the project has been plagued by numerous setbacks over the last 5 years.

The reveal of 2x-Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali as Blade by Marvel Studios seemed like another slam dunk for Kevin Feige and co. back in 2019.

Fast forward to 2024 and the numerous script and directorial issues that have beset the production could be viewed as a microcosm of the larger issues currently plaguing the MCU as a whole.

The latest news to emerge from the troubled reboot of the franchise that helped usher in the era of superhero movies (alongside Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman's X-Men) is that Aaron Pierre (Krypton, Foe) will no longer co-star alongside Ali.

In an interview with Variety, Pierre stated, "Early on, there were conversations. As the project evolved, I’m no longer part of that...attached. But there are a number of things that I’m tremendously excited about. Rebel Ridge with Jeremy Saulnier and The Lion King prequel with Barry Jenkins. All things that are coming out this year that myself and the team are deeply excited about and can’t wait to share with the world — and have people engage with it and experience it in whatever way they feel fit."

Pierre first joined the cast in 2022 in a mysterious role that was described as a "highly coveted part" among Hollywood's up-and-coming actors.

However, it wasn't long after Pierre's casting, that details emerged that Ali wasn't happy with the script and that Blade was regulated to the third or fourth lead in his own movie.

Since those reports, director Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) and screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour (Watchmen, PEN15) have been replaced by Yann Demange (White Boy Rick) and Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049, American Gods), respectively.

Variety notes that there have been several more writers to try their hand at penning a script in between Osei-Kuffour and Green- a sign that Marvel has struggled to find a script that pleases Ali and also aligns with the larger goals of the MCU.

The latest news is that Ali is still attached and is now satisfied with the revamped plot.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Ali confirmed as much, stating, "We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you. I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon. I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that."

Aside from Ali and Pierre, the only other actors attached to the project are Delroy Lindo, and Mia Goth. However, in light of the film's new script and Pierre's departure, it's anyone's guess as to whether Lindo and Goth are still on board.

Blade was originally envisioned as a Phase 5 film but due to the aforementioned script issues and this past summer's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, the film was pushed to November 7, 2025, making it a Phase 6 release.

I don't get why this movie has had so many issues with writing. How hard is it to incorporate vampires?

@SonOfAGif - I’d second guess myself at every corner considering how bad Morbius came off. Obviously different studio, but I don’t have any interest in vampires, and less now that Morbius exists lol.. not that my opinion matters but I doubt I’m the only person w my perspective, and I think they are cautious because of it. Also shoehorning vampires into the current mess doesn’t seem to fit. They should have started them as Halloween Specials on D+ like a sub story in another multiverse, and 5 or so Halloweens later released a Midnight Sons adding Blade into the mix in feature movie, one that had ties to Secret Wars so Ali could be involved there too. Or something like that

@SonOfAGif - it's hard to make a movie trying to tick a lot of checkboxes nowadays
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 3/17/2024, 8:09 PM
@vectorsigma - It seems like the only boxes you are primarily focused on are yours. Let's see:

No Non-White actors
No LGBTQ Actors
No International stories
No Minorities
No Women
No DEI

Are those enough of your boxes?

@SonOfAGif - First, it ain't Snipes so that's already an uphill battle, the lead actor is already pushing 50 and this particular character can't rely on CG to do the action sequences so they have to work around that, the lack of R rating effectively removes Blades balls, it was bad enough with how much they tried to tone that down with Blade Trinity. The lead is male and his support character whistler is also male which goes against Feige's Utopia of having as many female woman in these films as possible so instead of focusing on a re-introduction/ reboot, the writers have to shoehorn in his replacement in his very first film. Gobble all the shit together and you can start to see why this train is having such a hard time getting out of the station.

@MarioT1000 - Vampires are popular. Always have been... always will be. They aren't going anywhere.

@rychlec - no doubt, they have a large audience. Again, I’m just saying I’m sure the audience that doesn’t care for em is large enough to consider, because they are already in a sub-genre for these movies.. like first you cut out the non-comic book crowd, now you cut out the non vamp crowd, and is it still as popular? Maybe, what do I know? I’m not saying don’t do it, I’m saying take advantage of Halloween, to build it into the (movie) universe, so they can further their reach. Then bring it all together for a Blade movie where that stuff is established and you can get right to the good stuff. They can avoid an origin story (worst part of Morbius), and an introduction of dark forces (Idk if this was bad in Morbius I gave up after the origin lol), and just have a strong movie.. with vampires. Good news is my opinion doesn’t matter, and you’re getting your movie… eventually lol

Feige and Marvel should hand David Goyer a blank check, all the recent Blade comics, and let him cook!

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - F*ck no I still have blade 3 etched into my brain. Goyer works best when he collaborates. Maybe him and Jonathan Nolan again would be neat

@AquaClunge - Ok, Blade 3 WAS garbage, but he did write 1 and 2 and those were great. I wish they'd give him writing duties, but I kow it's just a pipedream.

@AquaClunge - ok, most of the problems with blade trinity was Wesley snipes being a diva.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - didnt David Goyer kill the last Blade series?
BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 3/17/2024, 6:03 PM
@Origame - nope, the writing was terrible through and through. To blame it all on snipes is just silly.
BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 3/17/2024, 6:08 PM
@phoenixvici - true, maybe the issue is more with his direction. He wrote all 3 but directed 3 😅 vampires with reaper mouths, even the dog had a reaper mouth 😭 ryan Reynolds playing deadpool man it was close to being the perfect cbm trilogy
phoenixvici
phoenixvici - 3/17/2024, 6:16 PM
@AquaClunge - I think it was witing and directing, doing both duites he was just in over his head. There was also the issue of Snipes being annoyed he was getting limited screentime to bring in the scooby doo gang. 🤣😂
Origame
Origame - 3/17/2024, 6:19 PM
@AquaClunge - ...I didn't blame it all on snipes. But it's clear the movie had to work around the fact snipes wouldn't cooperate at all.

Ffs, they had to cgi his eyes opening in the final scene because he just refused to open his eyes.
BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 3/17/2024, 7:19 PM
@Origame - yeah I read about that....but the writing was terrible and some of the short commings with MOS & bvs was down to the script (which goyer had a big hand in)
Origame
Origame - 3/17/2024, 7:24 PM
@AquaClunge - except most of the writing issues were from Snyder in those cases, as you can see in his work.

You even complained about Ryan Reynolds doing his Deadpool routine, but that was specifically ad libbed by Reynolds because some days they simply couldn't get snipes out of his trailer so they had to fill those scenes with something.

Snipes' stunt double filmed more scenes than snipes.
BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 3/17/2024, 7:47 PM
@phoenixvici - 😭😅😅😅 tbf I can't blame him. Jessica was alright but Ryan was annoy af.
BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 3/17/2024, 7:49 PM
@Origame - I mean you can blame snyder and snipes all you want, Goyer still wrote the script.

Ryan plays the same guy in every movie so I can't see how that is sorely down to snipes 😅
Origame
Origame - 3/17/2024, 8:05 PM
@AquaClunge - he also wrote some of the greatest movies out there like the dark knight trilogy and the other 2 blade movies.
BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 3/17/2024, 8:13 PM
@Origame - he had Jonathan Nolan for TDK and blade 1 & 2 were great but I feel he went off the deep-end with blade 3. I know snipes was a problem but there were creative choices in that script that had to have come from the writer 😅
Origame
Origame - 3/17/2024, 8:35 PM
@AquaClunge - so you admit his previous work was great but don't give him some benefit of the doubt on the movie his main actor won't cooperate on in the slightest?
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 3/17/2024, 8:52 PM
@dracula - Snipes was a dick but that seems to be his response to how Goyer was writing the film that pissed him off so much. From what I've read in the past, Snipes wanted Blade 3 to be about Blade whereas Goyer wanted to focus on setting up spin off characters with the night stalkers.
HashTagSwagg
HashTagSwagg - 3/17/2024, 9:08 PM
@AquaClunge - Goyer's done some great shit in the past but he was completely out of touch when it came to Blade 3, it was established in the first film which he wrote that Blade could tell the differences between humans and vampires by "the way they move, they way they smell" but in this film all it took to fool him was a pair of false teeth. Why the hell was Whistler's daughter blasting music in her ear during combat, what happens if something went room and her teammate's can't call out to her? the guy threw logic out the window for sake of attempting to look cool. Who cut's Dracula's hair? why the hell does it say "Word" at the end credits?
BraveNewClunge
BraveNewClunge - 3/17/2024, 11:58 PM
@Origame - the writing was bad from start to finish 😅 snipes wasn't happy with the script which was the cause of him being a 'diva'. If you don't want to acknowledge the faults with the writing then that's up to you 😅
