It had to happen sometime, and after dominating the box office for the past month, Barbie has finally been dethroned.
Warner Bros./DC Studios' Blue Beetle now looks set for a $25M - $27M million opening weekend domestically after grossing $10 million on Friday (including $3.3M from Thursday previews). By no means a spectacular start, but it'll be Kenough (sorry) to take the No. 1 spot from Greta Gerwig's acclaimed comedy.
The Ángel Manuel Soto-directed DC Comics movie has a long road ahead, but positive reviews should help, and good word-of-mouth could certainly propel the DC Comics film beyond already modest expectations. That said, the movie did receive a B- CinemaScore, and has now dropped to 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, taking it very close to losing its "certified fresh" status on the review aggregator.
It's worth noting that Blue Beetle had a relatively modest budget (at least compared to The Flash) of $120 million, so a debut of under $30 million may not necessarily spell disaster for Jaime Reyes' first big-screen outing.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."
"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."
The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.
Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.
