BLUE BEETLE Takes No. 1 Spot From BARBIE With $25M - $27M Domestic Debut

Blue Beetle may not have had a particularly impressive opening weekend, but it did enough to take the No. 1 spit from Barbie at the domestic box office...

It had to happen sometime, and after dominating the box office for the past month, Barbie has finally been dethroned.

Warner Bros./DC Studios' Blue Beetle now looks set for a $25M - $27M million opening weekend domestically after grossing $10 million on Friday (including $3.3M from Thursday previews). By no means a spectacular start, but it'll be Kenough (sorry) to take the No. 1 spot from Greta Gerwig's acclaimed comedy.

The Ángel Manuel Soto-directed DC Comics movie has a long road ahead, but positive reviews should help, and good word-of-mouth could certainly propel the DC Comics film beyond already modest expectations. That said, the movie did receive a B- CinemaScore, and has now dropped to 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, taking it very close to losing its "certified fresh" status on the review aggregator.

It's worth noting that Blue Beetle had a relatively modest budget (at least compared to The Flash) of $120 million, so a debut of under $30 million may not necessarily spell disaster for Jaime Reyes' first big-screen outing.

Have you been to see Blue Beetle yet? If so, what did you think? Drop us a comment down below.

"Recent college grad Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it," reads the synopsis. "As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab."

"When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armour capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero Blue Beetle."

The cast also includes Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar, and Raoul Max Trujillo.

Blue Beetle is set to be released in theaters on August 18, 2023.

Nice to see a Blue Beetle article that isn’t so passive aggressive against it. I’m not a fan of the majority of DC’s output in the last decade, but damn if I don’t want them to succeed. Then we all win as fans. Glad that this movie is working for people and hope to see it soon

I believe it’s a B+ CinemaScore not a B-.

Whatever it makes this weekend will be more than it would have earned debuting straight-to-streaming, like was originally planned.

@santoanderson - You've gotta pay back the marketing, distribution and such first before it starts to make a profit, but it will probably start to make a profit a some point. And any penny it makes after that is a penny more than it would have had.

I really liked it! I'm easily pleased but I just found it to be a sweet film and (mild spoilers) I was glad the film was more personal and not a world ending affair

@Snow43214 - relatable stories are the secret to long lasting enjoyment from a movie and future success, This has it. The family relationship between this movie, and the crappy ant man movies seems like night and day

Glad it's doing well if only for the fact this will give studios more confidence to focus on the more obscure DC characters outside of animation projects.

Hope it does well, seems so many people hate it because it's DC and won't give it a chance.

LMFAO at you VERY Naive fanboys! The fact that you can call a 25 million BO opening a SUCCESS shows how you look at a OBVIOUS Box Office BOMB as good news. It's like you don't know what is considered an actual HIT anymore because you readily accept failures and call it successful because YOU enjoyed it. Next you'll be giving him ideas for a sequel that'll NEVER happen

@JohnShaft - They'll find any way to cope. This Iron Man 1 knockoff will flop just like The Flash did.

@bobevanz - YOU are one of the guys who live in FANTASY LAND where making MONEY doesn't matter. You live in Dad's basement with no windows and pay no bills so you are free to think Box Office doesn't matter

I certainly DON'T envy James Gunn. The DCU is like the Titanic AFTER it hit the iceberg and he's trying to keep it afloat

As I've said, I just hope these DC bombs lately don't lead to characters like Jaime Reyes and Barry Allen to be reduced to HBO Max or whatever it's called, the same way Green Lantern was burned by the 2011 flop. At least Shazam got 2 films before getting to that fate. I don't wanna get too ahead commenting on Gunn and Safran's plans - because we simply can't know - and I'm sure Wonder Woman will eventually get her own big screen reboot, just a little later. But Jaime in particular is already niché, I don't want the toxicity of the DC brand (Batman and Joker are a whole other thing) and Warner Bros' zero marketing effort to kill all the potential of this character on the big screen.

Man, Superman Legacy has a lot hanging on it, doesn't it.

I don't hate it because it's DC.

I don't actually hate it - I'm just completely uninterested and tired of the same old 'message' laden or 'diverse' movies that are mid AF being force fed into the market with actors and directors claiming racism or any other 'ism' when their projects shit the bed.

The whole pre-release anti-racist marketing campaign is [frick]ing retarded. Make shit that doesn't suck. Full stop.

The extremely non white Spider-Verse was [frick]ING AWESOME - even with the abrupt ending, so the failing franchises can't use the race card unilaterally
DarthAlgar
DarthAlgar - 8/19/2023, 5:07 PM
@Batmangina - You're speaking logic right now, and for a lot of people on here that won't register with them. For them everything is about the "isms".
Batmangina
Batmangina - 8/19/2023, 5:12 PM
@DarthAlgar - The craziest shit is how the 'ism' thing is an immediate reason for failure - except when it isn't - i.e. Spider-Verse.
