Warner Bros.' upcoming Blue Beetle movie has added three supporting cast members, with Bruna Marquezine, Belissa Escobedo and Harvey Guillén set to join Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña in the lead role of Jaime Reyes.

Brazilian newcomer Marquezine will play the female lead and Reyes' love interest Penny, Escobedo (Sex Appeal, American Horror Stories) will portray Jaime's younger sister Milagros Reyes, and Guillen’s (What We Do In The Shadows) role is currently being kept under wraps.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the film will focus on Maridueña's take on Reyes, who was introduced back in 2006's Infinite Crisis. The Mexican-American teen was actually the third character to take up the mantle of Blue Beetle after after Dan Garret and Ted Kord - although he's arguably eclipsed both in popularity since. Mexican-born writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer penned the screenplay, and John Rickard is on board as producer.

We got our first look at some concept art for Reyes' costume last year during DC FanDome.

The movie was originally being developed as a HBO Max exclusive, but we recently found out that The DCEU's first Latino lead hero will make his feature debut on the big screen on August 18, 2023.

@Battabingg - Talking to Deadline, Warner Bros. President Toby Emmerich shared his thoughts on where DC goes from here. "The secret of the movie business is quality. It’s the best business strategy for both theatrical motion pictures and superhero movies. The movies don’t have to all have the same tone, or interlock with other DC movies, or have an Easter egg that sets up another film."

@Marveladdict - He said they don't all have to interlock (and Joker and The Batman don't). It doesn't mean that they can't (Harcourt from Peacemaker shows up in Black Adam; Wonder Woman shows up in Shazam 2).

played Blue Beetle in Injustice 2 this morning and he was awesome. Really hoping they knock this out of the park because he could be a really unique character to build a franchise around

If they didnt use Maxwell Lord in 1984, he would have made a good villain.

Maybe make it the search for ted kord

Casting a bit old for the sister, comics usually portray her as very young

@dracula - If the character's age isn't a big deal to the story, it's just an easy work around to pesky child labor laws.

Cast shaping up nicely. It’s awesome they are so confident in this that it’s no longer an HBO Max exclusive and instead gonna be a theatrical release.

I’m unfamiliar with these actors but more non-mainstream performers showing up in theatrical releases is definitely welcomed

@JFerguson - oh, Xolo, the main actor who become Blue Beetle/Reyes is in Karate Kid's spin-off KOBRA KAI.
