BLUE BEETLE Will No Longer Be A HBO Max Release; Is Set To Hit Theaters On August 18, 2023

There was quite a bit of backlash when Blue Beetle was announced as an HBO Max-exclusive release, but Warner Bros. has now decided to send the Angel Manuel Soto-directed movie to theaters after all.

Good news for Blue Beetle fans, as the DC Comics superhero is set to make his feature debut on the big screen, and not on HBO Max as originally planned!

Blue Beetle was being developed for the streaming service along with Batgirl (no updates on the status of that project), but reports are now coming in that Warner Bros. has decided to debut the movie exclusively in theaters on August 18, 2023.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the film will star Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña in the lead role as Jaime Reyes, who was introduced back in 2006's Infinite Crisis. The Mexican-American teen was actually the third character to take up the mantle of Blue Beetle after after Dan Garret and Ted Kord - although he's arguably eclipsed both in popularity since.

Though some purists probably would have preferred to see Kord introduced first, this is a smart move by WB. Tom Holland's teenage take on Spider-Man has been a huge success for Marvel, after all, and the DC Films Universe doesn't currently have a character that will appeal more to a slightly younger demographic on its roster.

We recently got a first look at Reyes' comic-accurate costume via some concept art, which you can check out here.

@AgentZero - Not sure if we are thinking of the same one but pretty sure most of those have either been made or are being made

Didn't meet the originally intended release date and some of those projects are very different than originally planned but they are made.

Green Lantern got changed into a show

Only one that completely went nowhere is Cyborg

Wonder if Static and Batgirl will get the same treatment

@dracula - Pretty sure Static was always supposed to be in theaters. And if not, it should be. He's still a bigger name than Blue Beetle

@KWilly - Dont know if id call him bigger, he became popular first but really they have gotten around the same amount of exposure and neither of their more recent comics runs have lasted that long.

Static is mainly known for the cartoon
Beetle is mainly known for YJ and Batman The brave and the bold

@dracula - I think so. I think WB is regretting a lot of their decisions this year, including putting all their eggs in the HBO Max basket, and are realizing it is not going to be worth it to put Blue Beetle, Batgirl, etc on their streaming service.

Never read em but don’t the comics always pair him with Booster Gold? I guess the title would sound too flavor of the week

@TheWalkingCuban - Not necessarily. The original Blue Beetle was Dan Garrett who never worked with Booster. Then came the 60s Ted Kird series, Booster hadn't been created yet. Then came the 80s Ted series. Booster doesnt show up until the end with Mister Miracle I believe. Fun series just been awhile since I read it. Then he joined the Justice League and yes partnered with Booster. Then Ted died and Jaime was created who has more in cimmon with Dan then Ted.

@feedonatreefrog - I don't know why but I'm reminded of that terrible Max Steel movie whenever I see news for this.
