CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD's Tim Blake Nelson Confirms Movie Will Explain The Leader's 16-Year Absence

The Incredible Hulk's Tim Blake Nelson says Marvel has dreamed up a "revelation" for why we haven't seen The Leader in the MCU since 2008. Hear more from the Captain America: Brave New World star here...

One of the most surprising things about Captain America: Brave New World is the fact Sam Wilson will have to match wits with The Leader.

We first met Samuel Sterns in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and learned Bruce Banner's apparent ally had some questionable beliefs when it came to science. That included creating the Abomination and, when Emil Blonsky went on a rampage in Harlem, Sterns got his own dose of Gamma poisoning after a sample of Banner's blood contaminated a wound on his head.

His head started growing and that was the last we saw of Sterns until a tie-in comic (which may or may not be considered "canon") revealed that Black Widow took him into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.

Talking to Screen Rant, actor Tim Blake Nelson confirmed he's part of Captain America: Brave New World's reshoots and that we'll get an explanation for The Leader's 16-year absence from the MCU.

"[I'm] very excited about it. I'm headed to Atlanta tomorrow to continue working on that. It's been very exciting to bring back a character from 16 years ago and imagine how he has aged with me and how that has manifested."

"The Marvel team has come up with a really interesting explanation - revelation, I should say, as to what he's been up to for 16 years and why," the actor teased.

We're intrigued by what that might be and wouldn't be shocked if he's been working for the U.S. Government in secret. If so, it could explain how President Ross becomes the rampaging Red Hulk!

"I had a great time filming it," Nelson recently told us about his role in the movie. "And [I] worked with the Marvel team and this wonderful makeup artist named David Atherton with whom I've collaborated on a dozen movies now."

"I think people are going to be pretty excited about what this guy looks like. And what he has to say and what he does," he teased. "All power to the amazing team over there at Marvel."

Captain America: Brave New World's cast includes Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Liv Tyler, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, and WWE Superstar Seth Rollins.

Julius Onah helms the movie from a screenplay by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, though the director is believed to have also taken a pass at it. Matthew Orton, meanwhile, has written new scenes for the additional photography which is now taking place in Atlanta, Georgia.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to arrive in theaters on February 14, 2025.

Think it would be interesting to see those events from Fury's Big Week with Black Widow as opening to this movie, followed by an opening montage similar to TIH with Leader being forced to work for SHIELD/Hydra/Government

@bkmeijer1 - that could be cool!!.

He’s been working for the government but has also been working in his own motives aswell.

I still think he’s behind The Serpent Society in this.

@TheVisionary25 - yeah, I could see him pulling off some stuff on his own. Including creating/influencing the Serpent Society to push his own plans (of creating a new world order, like the original title implied)

Perhaps the concept of Master Mold being replaced by a combo of Tiamut, the Celestial on the Indian Ocean, and The Leader? Tiamut being the physical location and The Leader being the brains.

I mean...ok? This is like the most basic thing to explain. Might as well say "we're not gonna make obvious writing mistakes"

Actually, this is current marvel. That would be news.

Wake me up when the next Ruffalo-less Hulk movie comes out. I stopped caring about this character like 15 years ago. Hulk movie is still near the top of my list for my favorite MCU movies

@WarMonkey - Ruffalo is actually a great actor, and could pull off a very different kind of Hulk movie. I would love to see a smaller, Bruce banner on the run, kind of film, or a Joe fixit film

@Izaizaiza - He was great in 1st 2 Avengers movie but I haven't enjoyed his goofy take since then..

@WarMonkey - I dont buy him as a genius whatsoever. He looks and acts/speaks almost like he has a learning disability. And he doesnt portray any angst or anger, etc. I really couldnt think of a worse portrayal of bruce banner or the hulk.

@WarMonkey - All he needs is the right script and director

I haven’t seen TIH in awhile (I never really much cared for it) but from what I remember , the seeds of him being this eccentric yet very curious & ambitious scientist that was anti-government were planted in that so it will be interesting to see how they follow up on it.

I could even see him having gone underground at some point (maybe even now residing in the statue of Tiamut since that’s been rumored as a plot point for awhile) to create a Gamma world given his interest in Banner’s blood in TIH.

Either way, looking forward to it since Tim Blake Nelson is a great actor and I’m glad he’s being given a showcase as the main villain of this!!.

@@JoshWilding you may be on the nose here. Mcu has positioned American government or factions within, as being antagonists on several occasions...

I'm still convinced the Hulk will make his Return in Captain America: Brave New World. The Leader is to the Hulk has Kingpin is to Daredevil. Green Goblin is to Spiderman.

Would absolutely make sense for Ross to have apprehended or at least stayed in contact with Sterns after catching Bruce in his lab. Circumstantially it was a crime for him to be housing/hiding Bruce; Ross would certainly have no problem making it a crime for his case either way.

Well, we would hope that would've already been a given. Disney has yanked whatever elements from Hulk 2008 that they could think of and inserted them into their new content. (I think that's a good thing). That would be idiotic to put him in this movie, and not explain who he was.

The last person left is Liv Tyler.

I have zero faith in the movie script or director being good.

Nor will the reshoots change the movie miraculously into a good one.
