Who Is Red Hulk? CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD's Villain Explained - Possible SPOILERS

The first trailer for Captain America: Brave New World sees Sam Wilson squaring off with the villainous Red Hulk, but who is the movie's big bad, what are his comic book origins, and where is this leading?

Feature Opinion

Captain America: Brave New World dropped its first teaser trailer earlier today (check it out here) and, while promo art confirmed Red Hulk's presence several months ago, nothing could have prepared us for actually seeing him in action.

Now, we know that not all of you are comic book readers and that's alright! Even the biggest fans among you may not be overly familiar with General Thaddeus Ross' monstrous alter-ego, not least because his origins on the page are massively convoluted.

In this feature, we're presenting an easy-to-follow breakdown of Red Hulk's origin story, motivations, and powers. We're also diving into what it might mean for his MCU counterpart and the possible debut of another Hulk.

To check out this feature, all you need to do is click the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

5. Wait, How Did Ross Become A Hulk, Anyway?

General-Thunderbolt-Ross-Becoming-Red-Hulk-Thanks-to-MODOK-copy

Even if you only have a cursory knowledge of who General Ross is, chances are you'll be aware that he hates Bruce Banner and, more specifically, The Hulk.

So, how and why does he become one? Well, shortly after Ross decided to create gamma-powered supersoldiers, he was approached by villains The Leader and M.O.D.O.K. with an offer he couldn't refuse: they'd resurrect his dead daughter, Betty, if he agreed to work with them.

Using radiation they'd siphoned from the Jade Giant, the duo transformed the General into a deadly new Red Hulk. Ross had secretly been jealous of Banner's power - and superheroes, in general - for years. Now, though, he was powerful enough to beat anyone.

The MCU has added an interesting new wrinkle by making him President; however, with The Leader working in the shadows, we'd bet on Ross willingly allowing himself to be transformed into America's greatest superhuman weapon!

4. Red Hulk's Powers

Hulk-Spider-Man-copy

Red Hulk isn't just a, well, red Hulk. In terms of his basic abilities, though, he and Bruce Banner aren't all that different. In this form, Ross is immensely strong, has a powerful healing factor, and is capable of everything you'd expect from his heroic counterpart.

Where they differ is that the angrier Red Hulk becomes, the more intense heat his skin generates. It can turn sand into glass and essentially bursts into flame during his most intense battles. He can even utilise a crude form of heat vision!

Red Hulk is also able to absorb energy and, perhaps most frighteningly, loses none of his intelligence when transformed. If anything, Ross just becomes more unhinged and bloodthirsty.

With no Super Soldier Serum in Sam Wilson's veins, we're not sure how he'll fend off Red Hulk. Vibranium will help, sure, but Cap might need some superpowered backup.

3. Villain-Turned-Hero

Venom-Vol-2-13-Textless-copy

The downside of Red Hulk's ability to generate heat is the fact that it also becomes his weakness. In the comics, The Hulk allowed Ross to pummel him until the heat he generated overwhelmed the villain and he was easy to finish off. The same might happen here.

Following this defeat, Red Hulk became a hero of sorts. The Hulk orchestrated a plan to fake General Ross' death, though it left his father-in-law trapped in the form he'd hated for so long. Imprisoned, he had time to reflect on his actions and ultimately agreed to help The Avengers.

From there, he formed an unsanctioned team of Thunderbolts to clean up the messes he created as Ross and remains, at best, an anti-hero.

If Marvel Studios can convince Harrison Ford (who replaces the late William Hurt) to stick around, them there may be more to come for Red Hulk after Captain America: Brave New World. However, his time as U.S. President will likely be cut short.

2. General Ross' MCU History

Thaddeus-Ross-Earth-199999-from-Captain-America-Civil-War-001-copy

To bring you up to speed with what led Ross to this point in the MCU, we need to go right back to The Incredible Hulk. In that movie, Ross was determined to create new super soldiers, resulting in Emil Blonsky's transformation into an Abomination.

He was gone for a while but returned in Captain America: Civil War, making his first foray into politics as the U.S. Secretary of State. He spearheaded the Sokovia Accords and was behind Steve's allies being imprisoned in The Raft.

After trying and failing to capture Black Widow, he briefly objected to the Secret Avengers helping out during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, and later showed up at Tony Stark's funeral.

Now, he's back and has shaved off his 'tache to become U.S. President and one of the most powerful men in the world. President Ritson's actions in Secret Invasion likely paved the way for an easy win and Ross hopes to make an ally out of Captain America. We'd bet on him still wanting a super soldier army, though, and his transformation into Red Hulk may well be payback on The Leader's part for his forced servitude to those ends.

1. He's Not The Only Red Hulk

shehulkscolor

Poor Betty Ross has died and been resurrected at least a few times over the years, including on the occasion mentioned above when The Leader and M.O.D.O.K. brought her back into the land of the living.

However, just as they turned the General into a Red Hulk, they secretly did the same to Betty. With the help of the villainous Doc Samson, she was brainwashed and became their puppet.

That didn't last and Betty eventually became a Hulk in her own right. Her powers have evolved a lot in recent years, including a transformation which saw her take on a far more monstrous form...with wings!

Liv Tyler will reprise her role as Betty in Captain America: Brave New World and as rumours swirl about a World War Hulk or World War Hulks project, we'd bet on her "Hulking Out" soon enough as well.

The general audience likes the hulk and steve rogers cap.

Not version 2 of them

@vectorsigma - The general audience is not familiar with "version 2" yet, maybe after the movie they will start appreciating them more.

@Urubrodi - falcon has been shadowing cap since tws and even had his own show.

We got a glimpse of another "hulk" in she-hulk.

Nothing has resonated yet.

@vectorsigma - nah,
Red Hulk will be fine.
Nobody knew and cared about the Guardians before they were in the MCU... That changed.

@vectorsigma - I saw this comment on reddit and now Thunderbolts sort of makes sense:
"Holy crap. The government covers up the President being Red Hulk, telling the public he was "killed" by Red Hulk, and Captain America and his Avengers weren't there to save the day. So the USA needs its own team of superheroes, which it names in honor of the deceased President: the Thunderbolts"

@vectorsigma - the 'general audience' didn't necessarily watch those Disney + shows. That's been the complaint that things are happening on TV and moviegoers are lost when they go to see a movie because they haven't been watching the TV shows.

@Urubrodi -
You are right, the general audience is not familiar with 'version 2' which is why the hook to get them invested won't work. They'll just think it's a knock-off.

@OptimusCrime - guardians was handled by a great creative in Gunn. This one is different

@bobevanz - this is a good theory.

But you know what, ive just read the major plot point of d&w here and it sounds like a mess of plotholes imo.

So this sounding like a good theory tells me it wont be the actual case. But let's see
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 7/13/2024, 2:06 AM
@JonC - that's the problem imo. People are not watching it because it is on disney+ but because people dont have any reasons to invest on them unlike the original cast of characters. But they still continuing on projects for new characters.

Not bad. I actually like the Winter Soldier, political thriller vibes it's giving off.

@ModHaterSLADE - same here. It also gave me a lot of Jack Ryan vibes. Especially due to that naval conflict and the DC circle infiltration.

ModHaterSLADE - 7/12/2024, 1:40 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Jack Ryan is a good comparison, especially with Ford involved.

It wouldn't be surprised if Isaiah is trying to shoot Ross in human form, as at that point he's the only one that knows Leader turned Ross into Red Hulk.

I do look forward to how Red Hulk is going to be beaten though. Hoping gor Hulk to show up, because not having that clash would be a missed opportunity.

@bkmeijer1 - It seems unlikely that anyone could stop Red Hulk who’s been announced in this movie. Either Hulk or some other 3rd act cameo to save the day.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/12/2024, 2:33 PM
@mountainman - all of the sudden I want Amadeus Cho to show up, or maybe even Rick Jones. But yeah, it's probably gonna be Hulk, She-Hulk or maybe even Abomination
mountainman
mountainman - 7/12/2024, 3:19 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Personally I’d be dissatisfied if it wasn’t the Hulk. Maybe the others can be in there too. She Hulk doesn’t have a past with Ross. The other two do, but man we want to see Red Hulk fight his actual nemesis.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/12/2024, 5:44 PM
@mountainman - same. It's probably the only opportunity to do so as well since Red Hulk (like pretty much every villain) won't stick around after.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/12/2024, 6:07 PM
@bkmeijer1 - I can’t imagine Ford sticking around for long. Maybe one more after this (Thunderbolts?)
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/13/2024, 2:41 AM
@mountainman - that one would make sense, but I don't see Hulk appearing there. Think Brave New World is the best opportunity
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 7/13/2024, 9:16 AM
@mountainman - It does seem unlikely unless another Hulk turns up which is possible...

...but in universe timeline the Leader was working on a cure for Banner that temporarily worked a couple decades prior giving ample time to improve on it or find alternative perm of temp cures/tranqs, add in a fight over Adamantium source and you have a metal that could penetrate a Hulk's skin with something...

We don't know much with certainty however such as if Sabra has mutant abilities and what they are if so, even with rumors and leaks, but what we do know is Rulk isn't the main villain thus need not be required to defeat him fully anyway however if Hawkeye could defeat Hulk in the comics in multiple ways multiple times it is always possible sans brute force (which is typicaly counter productive with Hulks) and Rulk has that overheating issue.

We'll just have to wait and see if the script and production lands whatever they come up with but think in a way it can work to sell Sam as Cap as will have to show top level tactical abilities to overcome the lack of super powers which IS something he should have in his skillset considering his job was taking down entire enemy bases with only a couple in fancy squirrel suits, lol.
mountainman
mountainman - 7/13/2024, 2:22 PM
@bkmeijer1 - BNW seems like it’ll feature a lot of Hulk’s supporting cast. I really wouldn’t mind to see Hulk, She Hulk AND abomination show up.

It seems the finale may have Leader, Red Hulk, and potentially some gamma soldiers to contend with. They’ll need some big hitters to handle that.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/13/2024, 2:30 PM
@mountainman - maybe even Red She-Hulk shows up. The Green vs the Red Goliaths with Abomination caught in the middle could be interesting.

I don't really see that happening though. Think it'll just be Red Hulk and hopefully Hulk dropping in to give Sam a hand. Feels like Carol and Bruce are the only characters actively trying to keep the Avengers together, so it makes sense imo.
cubichy
cubichy - 7/12/2024, 12:48 PM
garbage, absolute trash. Steve rogers is CAP, no one else and the fact that Sam has the shield and the wings, doesn't work. Sam has ZERO chance against the red hulk. There is nothing in the trailer that makes me want to see this travesty. What were they thinking, I can't see anyway that this isn't another Marvels.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 7/12/2024, 5:46 PM
@cubichy - I think it works, but I guess not everything is for everybody. Good on you for not saying "nobody wants to see this", because that's kinda what I got used to from similar comments from other users.

"he was approached by villains The Leader and M.O.D.O.K. with an officer he couldn't refuse" .. might want to do some proof reading there bub.

anyways hope the CGI isnt dogshit for Red Hulk. Curious how sam will "take him down or stop him" without the Help of Hulk or ugh, even She-Hulk

anyways, pleasantly surprised with the teaser, hope this is a good movie

@bkmeijer1 - I mean.. legit...unless he takes a super solider serum... he 1000% needs Hulk to help... I hope that's the case but guess we'll see.

I guess hope it's a good movie

My only problem with Rulk being in the movie is that he’s literally primarily a Hulk antagonist. One of his most famous.
So idk why’d they give Sam Wilson one of Hulk’s villains.

Hopefully we get Absorbing man against an actually cool green Hulk someday I guess.
At least as a side character.

Yep, what we need most is hundreds of iterations of existing Marvel characters. Two words: watered down.
