CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR - A Spoiler-Free Ranking Of The 6 Members Of #TeamIronMan
We've ranked the members of #TeamCap, but how does #TeamIronMan fare in Civil War? With new MCU additions like Black Panther and Spider-Man, you may be shocked by who comes out on top...
With Captain America: Civil War now right around the corner, I'm sure there are many of you wondering how your favourite heroes fare in Marvel's first Phase 3 movie. We've already taken a spoiler-filled look at what did and didn't work in the release which is quite possibly the studio's best to date, but what you'll find here is a mini review of sorts for each of the heroes in #TeamIronMan.
So far, it seems like the vast majority of fans are rooting for #TeamCap, but Tony Stark has assembled a pretty cool group of Avengers of his own. Bear in mind that Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed that Iron Man won't be the villain here too, so there's really no good reason not to at least consider siding with the Armoured Avengers and his pals!
Throw in the addition of major new players in the Marvel Cinematic Universe like Black Panther and Spider-Man, and the question of how these heroes fare in the movie is a very interesting one (trust me, I don't think you'll be able to predict how this ranking will go). There are no spoilers for the movie below, but everyone's definition of a "spoiler" differs, so read on at your own risk...
6. War Machine
My fellow CBM editor @RorMachine is going to love seeing his mortal enemy War Machine in last place, but the character ain't half bad in Captain America: Civil War. It would have been nice to spend a little more time getting some insight into why he chose #TeamIronMan, but Rhodey shows off some awesome new gadgets here as he heads into battle against his fellow members of The Avengers, and proves to be an unexpected highlight in many of the movie's action sequences.
So, why doesn't he rank higher? Well, while every character in this movie is handled well by the Russo Brothers, someone has to take this spot, and the rest of Tony Stark's team are just a little more memorable! Even so, fans of this character shouldn't worry about not coming out of the movie feeling satisfied.
5. Black Widow
One of the most surprising additions to #TeamIronMan, I was initially a little concerned with how Black Widow would be handled here as her not sticking with Steve Rogers after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is such a strange decision on the surface.
Thankfully, the movie finds a great way to justify Natasha's thought process, and nothing is quite as simple as it looks, including her relationship with Tony (someone she's never really been that fond of going all the way back to Iron Man 2). Despite not having the fancy abilities of her teammates, Black Widow kicks a lot of ass in Captain America: Civil War, and I'm tempted to say that this is one of Scarlett Johansson's best turns as the character to date. Marvel Studios really need to reconsider a solo movie for Widow...
4. The Vision
Joss Whedon did a lot of really cool things with The Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but as great as it was to see him lift Mjolnir, that pales in comparison to what the Russo Brothers deliver here. They have a lot of fun shocasing the hero's abilities, particularly in regards to changing his density, whether that's stepping through a wall of solidifying himself in battle.
The character actually has a fight scene with someone you definitely won't be able to predict, and it ends up being even more awesome than you might think! Action aside though, and The Vision is taken on a really interesting journey in Captain America: Civil War both in regards to the source of his powers (one of the Infinity Stones) and his developing relationship with his fellow Avengers, particularly the Scarlet Witch.
3. Spider-Man
Make no mistake about it; Tom Holland is absolutely spectacular and amazing (geddit?) as the new Spider-Man. This is the version of the iconic superhero we've all been waiting to see on the big screen, and regardless of which of his fellow heroes he interacts with, it's impossible not to get excited about seeing the wall-crawler in this world at last.
Holland is great both in and out of the costume, and while it's fair to say that the movie doesn't need him, the Marvel Cinematic Universe does, and he's an undeniably excellent addition to Captain America: Civil War. Like every other hero here, he obviously gets chance to steal the show in terms of action too! So, after all that praise, why isn't he at #1? Well, there are two other members of #TeamIronMan who just manage to top the youngster...
2. Iron Man
I've never been Iron Man's biggest fan, hence why I went into Captain America: Civil War almost wanting to hate the guy as much as I did after reading the Civil War comic book. It's to Marvel's credit then that they've handled his story arc here in such a great way, and while I went in and left as #TeamCap, I felt the pull of supporting #TeamIronMan a fair few times throughout and after watching.
It goes without saying that Robert Downey Jr. is once again excellent as Tony Stark, providing a lot of laughs at times, and being deadly serious in others with a strong dramatic performance. However, the biggest compliment I can give him is that the actor never steals the show from Chris Evans; he seems aware that it's his movie, and allows both him and Steve Rogers the chance to shine throughout.
1. Black Panther
Black Panther isn't just the standout member of #TeamIronMan; instead, I would argue that he's THE best character in Captain America: Civil War! The thought of having to wait until 2018 for his solo outing feels like torture, and Chadwick Boseman is out of this world as T'Challa.
Taking the character on a fascinating journey which serves very much as an origin story for the hero, the actor does a superb job of making us interested and invested in where Black Panther goes from here. Plus, while Marvel has occasionally dropped the ball when it comes to introducing new heroes in supporting roles, that's not the case here and t's also worth mentioning that the suit looks downright awesome in motion.
Make no mistake about it, the deadly serious Black Panther may be the most badass MCU hero to date.
